Leonardo Padura<\/a> stated this Thursday that he believes that \u201cthere is historical fatigue in Cuba\u201d and he hopes that \u201cthere will not be a repressive response\u201d from the government towards the demonstrators who protested in his country due to electricity and food problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Padura, Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, stated this at a press conference on the occasion of his participation in various activities organized by the <\/span>Mario Benedetti Center for Ibero-American Literary Studies of the University of Alicante<\/a> (Spain).<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the protests registered in Cuba due to power outages and food distribution problems, the writer clarified that he wanted to be cautious because they occurred while he was outside his country, since he is currently touring Spain to participate in different events.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCries for freedom were also heard\u201d in those demonstrations, something that \u201cis important and cannot be ignored,\u201d said Padura, who highlighted that \u201cthe crisis that is being experienced in Cuba\u201d in the last two or three years also has to do with emigration.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Padura, 650,000 Cubans have entered the United States through illegal channels in the last two years, a \u201cvery representative\u201d figure for Cuba, with a population of eleven million people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis journey to the United States is made on many occasions\u201d through Nicaragua, Mexico, the \u201ccoyote route,\u201d and \u201ccan cost up to 10,000 dollars\u201d and \u201cmany people have sold everything they had in Cuba\u201d to do so, the writer indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now \u201chunger and need have come together, as the saying goes, and this explosion occurred.\u2026 They are manifestations of a process that I have been describing in my novels for many years\u201d and \u201cthat I have called historical fatigue,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople deserve to live better after so many sacrifices and I hope that there is no repressive response from the Cuban government and State with these protesters,\u201d he stated, before remarking: \u201cWhat is evident is that the Cuban socio-political-economic system needs changes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, Padura announced that next September he will publish a new book that \u201cis a kind of essay, but also a bit of recovered memory\u201d about his \u201cbelonging to the city of Havana\u201d and his personal connection. It is, he specified, an essay interspersed with fragments of his novels and a compilation of his journalistic texts.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also announced that he began writing a new novel, of which he did not want to give many details, but clarified that its protagonist is not his famous Mario Conde, the detective in his police works.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for Mario Conde, he reiterated that it helps him \u201ctry to understand the Cuban reality, which not even God understands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the creative process in Cuba, the author of works such as <\/span>The Man Who Loved Dogs <\/span><\/i>or<\/span> Like Dust in the Wind<\/span><\/i> acknowledged that \u201cmany people, in order not to be censored, start by censoring themselves\u201d because their work could be canceled.<\/span><\/p>\n
