{"id":302780,"date":"2024-05-26T14:45:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-26T18:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=302780"},"modified":"2024-05-26T14:45:24","modified_gmt":"2024-05-26T18:45:24","slug":"buena-vista-social-club-album-to-give-greater-luster-to-grammy-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/buena-vista-social-club-album-to-give-greater-luster-to-grammy-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"Buena Vista Social Club album to give greater luster to Grammy Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legendary album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buena Vista Social Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which caused a worldwide hit in the 1990s, from New York to Tokyo, passing through the Vatican, will be included in the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame, at the request of the Latin Recording Academy of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The institution, based in the city of Miami, affirmed that this distinction recognizes the lasting influence and cultural impact of the album, considered a masterpiece of Cuban son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Academy, \u201cthe work, which took the soul and flavor of the Cuban son and Latin music throughout the world, is one of the most internationally recognized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliades Ochoa, one of the founders of the project, thanked the recognition and recalled his beginnings as part of the group:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven our image continues to go around the world thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club project,\u201d said the performer, one of the most active and prestigious son artists with international recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omara Portuondo, also founder of the project, thanked the Academy for including the album and hoped \u201cthis music continues alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aided decisively by Cuban engineer and musician Juan de Marcos Gonz\u00e1lez, founder of the Sierra Maestra son band, U.S. Ry Cooder convinced several consecrated figures of Cuban music, at that time retired, or mostly undervalued, to record in EGREM studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Candela - BuenaVistaSocialClub (Grammys 1997)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t2SFIWBPWyo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the founding members of the Buenavista Social Club, Compay Segundo, Ibrah\u00edm Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, Eliades Ochoa, Manuel \u201cPuntillita\u201d Licea, Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez and P\u00edo Leiva and Rub\u00e9n Gonz\u00e1lez Fontanills, among others, stand out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997 the debut recording appeared, titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buena Vista Social Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, despite the low expectations of many, given the studio in which it was recorded, the album was an overwhelming success, both critically and at the box office on the tours taken by the group that took them throughout the world over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the midst of viral popularity, when social media did not yet exist, the famous German filmmaker Wim Wenders made a documentary about the orchestra\u2019s performances in Amsterdam and New York, as well as interviews with its members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The material obtained an Oscar nomination in the documentary section, in addition to the award for Best Documentary at the European Film Festival, and a Grammy for the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales shattered the barrier of 8 million copies and the specialized magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rolling Stone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> selected it as one of the 500 best albums of all time and even a world-famous writer like Salman Rushdie alluded to it in his 1998 novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fury<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cthe Buena Vista summer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDos Gardenias,\u201d \u201cEl Cuarto de Tula,\u201d \u201cChan Chan,\u201d \u201cDe camino a la vereda\u201d and \u201cVeinte a\u00f1os\u201d are some of the songs included in the album, which obtained platinum certification for selling more than one million copies in the United States, UK, Argentina, Canada, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Afro-Cuban All Stars live at Chicago Jazz September 3 at 7:45 pm\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xIGkCuOGTQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
