
{"id":305615,"date":"2024-07-15T20:58:34","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T00:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=305615"},"modified":"2024-07-15T20:58:34","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T00:58:34","slug":"cuba-on-whatsapp-between-viruses-hurricanes-and-capped-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-on-whatsapp-between-viruses-hurricanes-and-capped-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba on WhatsApp: between viruses, hurricanes and capped prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDid you already get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tendencias\/vida-saludable\/lo-que-necesitas-saber-sobre-el-virus-de-oropouche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Oropouche<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u201d I ask Yolexis in our first conversation of the week on WhatsApp. \u201cThey say that it\u2019s all over Cuba right now,\u201d I added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSolavaya, brother,\u201d my Havana neighbor responds from a distance. \u201cDon\u2019t even mention that, because the way things are here, the worst thing would be if I also got that virus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome of Dania\u2019s relatives who live in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/cienfuegos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cienfuegos<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0got it and wiped them out,\u201d he tells me. \u201cIt kept them in bed for several days, with very high fever and pain all over their bodies, and when it seemed that they were better, they started again, even vomiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLook at the thing they call the Oropouche Ruperto, like the character in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivir del Cuento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because when you\u2019re getting over it, devastated, it comes back and affects you even more,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUgh, that is really tough,\u201d I worry. \u201cTake good care of yourselves there, something like this is really serious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes siree,\u201d Yolexis reaffirms. \u201cI don\u2019t even want to imagine that my daughter gets it. Or Dania\u2019s parents, who already have their ailments and could get complicated. And you know that ending in a hospital these days is a horror and mystery movie\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe problem is that with the rain of the last few weeks, the mosquitoes are everywhere and, no matter how much you take care of yourself at home, if they don\u2019t fumigate, we won\u2019t solve anything,\u201d he laments. \u201cBut if there is no fuel even for thermoelectric plants, there is even less for fumigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd, in short, is there Oropouche or not in Havana?\u201d I ask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/ciencia\/salud-en-cuba\/oropouche-en-cuba-42-hospitalizados-y-casi-todas-las-provincias-con-enfermos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Not officially<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you know\u2026 But of course, there is. It\u2019s spread throughout the country, and with the amount of people who always travel to Havana, and more so in the summer, you can bet on it,\u201d he reflects. \u201cAnd, to top it off, there is also dengue, and that one is even more serious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd you should see the trash, brother,\u201d he tells me, \u201cit\u2019s much worse than when you left. Between that, the leaks and the puddles everywhere, the mosquitoes are happy. And the hurricane in the area let us off the hook\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell yes,\u201d I agree. \u201cWhen I saw that Beryl was headed there, I was very worried. And I guess in Cuba people must have been holding their breath.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course, brother, if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/beryl-pierde-fuerza-rumbo-a-mexico-pero-deja-sus-regalitos-en-el-sur-de-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>that Beryl<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enters Cuba, it will give us trouble. It became category 5, an animal. The truth is, we escaped by a hair,\u201d Yolexis tells me, relieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust with what it had rained a few days before, a few buildings collapsed here in Havana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just imagine with winds of 200 kilometers per hour,\u201d he points out. \u201cThat happens just over a small part of Cuba and it sweeps us away: there are no roofs left standing, no electric poles, no banana trees, no nothing. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catastrophe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hear his last word \u2014 a very Cuban quip that has become a common expression on the island due to daily hardships and disasters \u2014 and I can\u2019t help but laugh, despite the dramatic nature of the situation. Yolexis hears me and does not ignore it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t laugh, things are serious. You may be over there with the millionaire sheiks and the full supermarkets, but here the situation is getting tougher every day,\u201d he reprimands me. \u201cImagine if the hurricane also wipes out what little is left\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf that happens then a bunch of bananas will cost 500 pesos and a pound of beans about a thousand, and pork at whatever the butchers want,\u201d he warns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTerrible,\u201d I managed to say, imagining how much I could buy at those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/prices-in-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>prices<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0with the money I officially earned in Cuba and how much so many Cubans could do, even without a hurricane, with a much lower salary and much more complicated family relationships. Like Yolexis himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s what it is<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as Piqu\u00e9 would say, but we have to continue, brother,\u201d my neighbor responds with admirable fortitude, taking the opportunity to sneak in a reference to soccer, his declared crisis-proof passion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow let\u2019s see what happens with the capped prices that have just been announced, although I, to be honest, have no illusions,\u201d he surprises me, returning to the issue of prices when I thought he would take the soccer route.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrue, they have already been announced,\u201d I follow. \u201cThings were quick because when they put the brakes on them last week they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/gobierno-confirma-que-topara-temporalmente-precios-del-pollo-y-otros-productos-de-las-mipymes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>said<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they would continue analyzing it with the MSMEs. In any case, from what I read when the cap thing was leaked, almost no one seemed happy with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just that price capping has never worked in Cuba, brother, everyone knows that,\u201d Yolexis answers me. \u201cThe only thing the government has achieved when it has done it is that these products are lost and appear more expensive on the black market. Who can say that now it won\u2019t be the same? In fact, they say it\u2019s already happening in some places.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn addition,\u201d he adds, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gacetaoficial.gob.cu\/sites\/default\/files\/goc-2024-o61.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> t<\/strong><b>he prices they set<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are quite high, I suppose so that the MSMEs would not complain too much. But most people don\u2019t notice that, it doesn\u2019t improve practically anything, and for MSMEs, even though they have removed customs duties, in the end, it is still an \u2018armlock\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf tomorrow the exchange for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/doliarization-of-cuban-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>dollar<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes up, which luckily is now quite steady, or international chicken prices rise for whatever reason, the limited profit margin they have now will affect them. And what do you think is going to happen?\u201d he reflects. \u201cThey are not going to sit back and lose money, because, at the end of the day, the investment is theirs, not the government\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat situation with the process is tremendous,\u201d I tell him just from the other side of the screen, overwhelmed at the same time by its crude insight and by the possible implications that emerge from his analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis situation is like a saga longer than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Yolexis tells me, still in the spirit of joking. \u201cI\u2019ll tell you how things go and how my wallet is doing. Because anyway, even if a few prices are capped, there are a bunch of others that continue uphill, just like that, as happy as the mosquitoes.
