Silvio Rodr\u00edguez<\/b><\/a> made it clear this Wednesday that he does not regret the stand and words he has upheld throughout his life while defending the importance of \u201cevolving\u201d without leaving aside principles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose opposed to the political process that has been called the Cuban Revolution say that I\u2019m changing as if it were possible to regret my life,\u201d said the 77-year-old Cuban singer-songwriter in <\/span>a statement published<\/b><\/a> on his blog <\/span>Segunda Cita<\/span><\/i>, in which he noted that \u201cseeing the world and learning does not mean ceasing to be supportive or abandoning the desire for social justice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing alive without evolving is absurd,\u201d said the man who years ago added a subtitle to the title of his digital space: \u201cblog in evolution,\u201d and also mentions the subject in \u201c<\/span>Sea se\u00f1ora<\/b><\/a>,\u201d when he calls for overcoming the <\/span>r<\/span><\/i> in <\/span>revolution<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his text, titled \u201cSolo as\u00ed\u201d (\u201cOnly this way do I feel that I honor the sacrifice of my people,\u201d he expands at the end), Silvio responds to \u201csome media\u201d that have recently reproduced his opinions on Cuban reality and \u201cdare to insinuate that I\u2019m changing my principles,\u201d something he considered \u201cpure manipulation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose who have followed the course of my work, those who have read my blog \u2014 and above all those who know me \u2014 know that I have always sung and said what I think,\u201d wrote the singer-songwriter, one of the essential figures of the new Cuban Song Movement and Spanish-language songs worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

Segunda Cita<\/span><\/i> was created by Silvio Rodr\u00edguez in 2010, taking the name of the album he released that same year. Since then, the space has hosted numerous cultural, artistic, and political debates for more than a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe only song that I once described as uncomfortable is \u2018<\/span>Cuando digo futuro<\/b><\/a>\u2019, even though I made it on request, for cinema. And it\u2019s not that I regret what I said but because I live in a very different future than the one I invited then.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Silvio was about 26 years old when he wrote it, and he assumed \u201cthat after fifty years the future was going to be different. I was very convinced when I said it, it is a very sincere song in that sense,\u201d he told <\/span>OnCuba<\/b> in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot only the future of Cubans but that of the world. In the 1960s and 1970s, it seemed that what was coming was going to be something else. There was a Third World that was searching, and it seemed that we would arrive at a place where there would be less prejudice, less war, that resources would be used for more noble things. How many wars have we been through in the last fifty years? How much has been spent on weapons and devices to destroy people?\u201d he then expanded.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, about a phrase he said about \u201cPeque\u00f1a serenata diurna\u201d and quoted by the AP news agency in <\/span>a recent interview <\/b><\/a>\u2014 repeated by other media and on social media \u2014 he said that \u201cit was taken out of context and the clarification that I purposely made was omitted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Revolution was not taught to me by others\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

In his statement, Silvio confirmed his commitment to socialism as a sociopolitical system and affirmed that he did not learn about the Revolution from others, but rather that he lived it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t read it nor was it taught to me by others. I lived it since I was a child, when everyone on my street knew that the bakery sold July 26 bonds and if we saw a policeman coming we would go and warn the baker,\u201d he narrated.<\/span><\/p>\n

The singer-songwriter, who <\/span>recently released<\/b><\/a> his 22nd album, <\/span>Quiero saber<\/span><\/i>, recalled episodes of his life such as his time as a literacy teacher, a militiaman and, years later, as a deputy to the National Assembly, even though he did not have, he said, \u201ca vocation for politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was never a Party member because it is difficult for me to accept without discussion what others come up with, but when I agree, not even the fear of death has been able to keep me from what I consider my duty. My two tours of Angola, in 1976, prove it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

After saying that he requested retirement at the age of 60 \u201cbecause I never put up with bureaucracy,\u201d he summarized what he did later, in particular his tours of prisons and <\/span>neighborhoods<\/b><\/a>\u00a0in Cuba for ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe pandemic stopped us. In the subsequent economic situation, I consider that continuing would create more problems than it would solve,\u201d he said, while estimating that in his 17 years as a retiree he has worked \u201cas much or more than before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Towards the end of his statement, the composer reiterated that he is essentially still the same person as always.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs I said recently in an unpublished interview, essentially \u2018I think I am the same: social justice without egalitarianism, science as a guide and a self-critical heart,\u2019\u201d he commented.<\/span><\/p>\n

This, however, is not at odds in his opinion with a necessary evolution, because, he said, \u201cthe Universe does not stop moving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Even so, he said that he continues working \u201cfor a more just world, where instead of investing in weapons, we invest in opportunities for everyone who is born.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI continue to think that socialism has better human possibilities than capitalism; but it will have to be a truly superior socialism, as has been said and sung so much, even if we must use \u2018blunted tools\u2019 while we are not capable of a better energy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

His declaration of principles closes with three symbolic and lapidary phrases: \u201cDown with dogmas,\u201d \u201cLong live freedom\u201d and the Mart\u00ed\u2019s \u201cWith all and for the good of all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Silvio\u2019s text saw the light a few days after his other words, <\/span>published as a comment<\/b><\/a> on another publication on his blog, were amplified on social and independent media.<\/span><\/p>\n

In them, the singer-songwriter pointed out that \u201cthe little snakes of 1974 are today horrendous monsters,\u201d about his song \u201cSue\u00f1o con serpientes,\u201d composed in 1974 and included in his first album, <\/span>D\u00edas y flores\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(1975).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many bureaucratic obstacles that I know have been suffered by several potential investors who have given up on carrying out projects because of the delays imposed by the government apparatus,\u201d he said when commenting on an opinion by professor and economist <\/span>Juan Triana\u00a0<\/b><\/a>on <\/span>Segunda Cita<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs Fidel said several times: only we ourselves can destroy this. It is sad to see it, but I think that is what is happening. If we do not quickly dismantle what is holding us back, we will be swallowed up by our own creations. They are already chewing us up.
