A few days ago, <\/span>the Cuban government confirmed<\/b><\/a> it would not stop its offensive against what it calls \u201ceconomic distortions\u201d and, with that intention, it has redoubled inspections and fines for private businesses and other economic actors.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Ministry of Finance and Prices (MFP), this weekend \u201cjoint and comprehensive actions for price control, tax payment and the process of bancarization\u201d were carried out throughout the island, not only in the private sector but also in state entities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vladimir Regueiro Ale, minister of that portfolio, <\/span>explained<\/b><\/a>\u00a0to the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN) news agency that the inspections are directed by local governments and specialists from the MFP, the National Tax Administration Office (ONAT), the Comprehensive Supervision Departments (DIS) and \u201cas many institutions as can provide inspectors\u201d participate in them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister assured that these exercises have a \u201cfavorable reception in the population,\u201d and specified that while carrying them out \u201cviolations or infractions are detected, which lead to the imposition of high fines, closure of businesses or other measures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Regueiro Ale defended the inspections because they are directed against \u201cthe distortions that we must correct on the ground, in order to contain inflation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Compliance with the price cap established last July for a group of products, the profit margin existing in State purchases from private actors, tax evasion, and the possibility of online payments are among the issues audited by State inspectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of these actions, the head of the MFP considered \u201cessential\u201d the \u201csupport of the population\u201d against illegalities, and called on people to report \u201cwherever there are abusive prices, hidden products or the money is paid into personal accounts and not into fiscal accounts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Santa Clara<\/b><\/p>\n

An example of the government crusade this weekend, despite the rains of <\/span>Tropical Storm Debbie<\/b><\/a>, occurred in Santa Clara. There, state inspectors detected \u201cinfractions\u201d in 87 of the 95 economic actors inspected, 49 of which violated the price cap.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Facebook post<\/b><\/a> by the Inspection Department of the capital of Villa Clara confirmed the detection of \u201cviolations\u201d in all the People\u2019s Councils of the municipality and the imposition of fines for different criteria, including \u201cdeceiving the consumer or altering price,\u201d \u201cwithholding products\u201d and \u201capplying abusive prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The amounts of the fines, according to the entity, amounted to 8,000 pesos, while \u201c23 forced sales were applied at fixed prices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A second post<\/b><\/a>, on inspections applied at agricultural fairs, reported more fines, which \u201cranged between 4,000 and 10,000 pesos according to the violation,\u201d while \u201c10 forced sales were applied as accessory measures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, <\/span>the Cuban government reported<\/b><\/a> that it imposed fines of 30 million pesos in just five days against an undetermined number of private enterprises for failing to comply with the price cap on six basic products, including chicken and powdered milk.<\/span><\/p>\n

This cap, imposed at the beginning of July, can be \u201cupdated\u201d by the island\u2019s authorities and also applied to other goods, as established by <\/span>resolution 225<\/b><\/a> of the MFP.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
