Combiovent, a Cuban lung ventilator for intensive care of adults is already \u201cin the introduction phase\u201d in the national health system, particularly <\/span>in Havana<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, 15 units are operating in three hospitals in the Cuban capital, <\/span>according to<\/b><\/a> Granma<\/span><\/i> newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n

The equipment can provide artificial respiration to seriously ill patients in critical condition \u201cas a result of an illness, trauma or other condition,\u201d which \u201crequires ventilatory support,\u201d says the official publication.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed and produced by the Combiomed Digital Medical Technology Company of the BioCubaFarma group, the device last March got the sanitary registration of the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED).<\/span><\/p>\n

Already in 2022, the island\u2019s regulatory authority had authorized its clinical use after a \u201crigorous validation process,\u201d as reported at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to engineer Arlem Fern\u00e1ndez Sigler, general director of Combiomed, the device \u201ccovers the entire range of functions linked to ventilation,\u201d through its \u201cfunctional stability,\u201d as well as \u201cthe low noise, the high reliability of its internal turbine and the operational ease it offers to medical and nursing staff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting in Havana<\/b><\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez Sigler told <\/span>Granma<\/span><\/i> that of the 15 ventilators already installed in Havana, four of them are in the Miguel Enr\u00edquez clinical surgical hospital: two in the intensive care unit, one in the emergency surgical unit and one in the therapy dedicated to the care of infectious diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, he explained, another four are operating at the 10 de Octubre Clinical Surgical Hospital, all in the intensive care unit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rest were placed in the Calixto Garc\u00eda Hospital: two in the emergency care therapy of the emergency room and in the surgical unit and five in the intensive care unit of that Havana health center.<\/span><\/p>\n

The strategy, said the director, is to extend the use of the equipment to all the provinces of the country, for which \u201cthe prior training of the personnel\u201d is necessary, since it is \u201can extremely complex vital support equipment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The specialist added that about 95 patients have already been ventilated with the Combiovent \u201cwithout any report of adverse events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Granma<\/span><\/i>, the production of these ventilators on the island \u201crepresents a significant saving,\u201d since the prices in the world market \u201cnormally exceed 20,000 dollars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuba began to work hard on the design of its own lung ventilator as a result of COVID-19, when the need for this equipment multiplied due to the characteristics of the disease and the impossibility of acquiring them because of U.S. sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several prototypes were then created to respond to the medical emergency, a task pioneered by the Cuban Neurosciences Center (CNEURO).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
