{"id":309591,"date":"2024-09-16T15:31:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T19:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=309591"},"modified":"2024-09-16T15:31:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T19:31:43","slug":"the-lancet-highlights-work-of-dagmar-garcia-one-of-soberana-02-vaccines-architects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/science-cuba\/science-in-cuba\/the-lancet-highlights-work-of-dagmar-garcia-one-of-soberana-02-vaccines-architects\/","title":{"rendered":"The Lancet highlights work of Dagmar Garc\u00eda, one of Soberana 02 vaccine\u2019s architects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanam\/article\/PIIS2667-193X(24)00212-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>journal<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0praised the work of Cuban scientist Dagmar Garc\u00eda, who has extensive experience in the development of vaccines, including those against COVID-19 and pneumoconiosis, which leads to potentially serious and even fatal infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the title, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanam\/article\/PIIS2667-193X(24)00212-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Dagmar Garc\u00eda Rivera\u2014a career of passion and resilience<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its author, the Brazilian Elisa Pucu, senior editor of the British publication and a doctor in Microbiology and Parasitology, told a life story of the Cuban pharmacologist, from her first scientific concerns in high school to her involvement in vaccines of high technical complexity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the pandemic [started]\u2026for the first time we received the responsibility to produce a vaccine as fast as possible\u2026 we worked very hard, we sacrificed our families, our life, our priorities during 2020, 2021 and 2022, [and we] fully dedicated to the development of SOBERANA vaccine,\u201d said Dr. Garc\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon discovering that the vaccine candidate worked, which was applied, after passing the mandatory clinical phases, to more than 1.8 million Cuban children, the effect on Dr. Garc\u00eda was \u201cincredible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me [this] is the most important thing I [have done] in my life,\u201d she summarized to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Caen los contagios tras la inyecci\u00f3n de Soberana 02 y Abdal\u00e1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zp_WDTd1bes?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expert is currently deputy head of Research at the Finlay Vaccine Institute, the first center to begin human clinical trials of two of the five Cuban COVID-19 vaccine candidates at the height of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHer success is also due to the combination of great teamwork and support from the government,\u201d wrote Dr. Pucu. \u201cThe combination of innovation, agility and commitment was the recipe for success,\u201d the editor summarized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A PhD on the immunomodulatory effect of natural products<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2003, Dr. Garc\u00eda began her PhD focusing on the immunomodulatory effect of natural products. Two years after successfully defending her doctoral thesis, she joined the research group led by Professor Vicente V\u00e9rez-Bencomo in 2008, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe day I had the first conversation with Dr. Vicente about vaccines, I [fell] in love with the idea to do, with my immunological knowledge, something important for [people\u2019s health]. Now, I have been involved in important vaccine projects [for] the last 15\u00a0years, leading the preclinical and clinical evaluation of these vaccines,\u201d recalled the researcher born in the city of Santa Clara and coming from a family of scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Presentan en Cuba registro sanitario de vacuna QUIMI- VIO\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c4vZfsEg9GM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Finlay Vaccine Institute and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), both in Havana, are the main centers responsible for vaccine production on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe focus on the most important vaccine projects. Our Institution, Finlay Vaccine Institute, produces more than 80% of vaccines used in our National Immunization Program,\u201d said the pharmacologist, who graduated in Pharmacy from the Universidad Central de las Villas in 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Quimi-Vio Project<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, Dr. Garc\u00eda is one of the leaders of the Quimi-Vio project, the variant created on the island of the pneumococcus vaccine, a heptavalent injectable that contains in its composition seven antigens against the bacteria that causes the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the researcher was awarded the Carlos J. Finlay medal, the highest recognition for Cuban scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A candidate for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine between 1905 and 1915, Cuban epidemiologist Carlos J. Finlay discovered the agent that transmits yellow fever \u2015 Aedes and Haemogogus mosquitoes \u2015 at the end of the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The infection, along with malaria, killed thousands of Panama Canal builders and forced France to abandon the project in 1889, the United States finally taking it over in
