What we experienced in 2024 is proof of this. Beyond all the shortcomings, or rather navigating them as best as possible, the work of artists, creators, cultural promoters and event organizers did not stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the controversies that have surrounded the sector in the year had to do with the questioning of the holding of large events in the current context of the nation. It is a valid point of view. However, it ignores that, beyond the necessary social role it has, culture, by providing recreation and spiritual and intellectual growth, also gives employment to thousands of people, therefore supporting many Cuban families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding its importance, <\/span><b>OnCuba<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes a look at an intense year for Cuban art and artists, on and off the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The always-awaited<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good part of the country\u2019s cultural life (especially in Havana) is in the large number of regular events that take place every year. Events with more or less impact, with greater or lesser growth, but which together make up an immense range of work opportunities for artists, options for the public, a showcase for our cultural life, and possibilities for creators from all over the world to present their art in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first major event of 2024 was the 39th edition of the International Jazz Plaza Festival, the largest musical event in the country, which this time featured the participation of artists from more than 20 countries, added to all the \u201cmonsters\u201d of Cuban jazz, who are ultimately those who have maintained the high level and even attracted many of the international stars who come as guests to the Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other major events that the public expects every year also had their editions. We mention the International Book Fair, with Brazil as the guest of honor and more than 45 nations represented, and the International New Latin American Film Festival in Havana, with more than 250 works in competition from 42 countries, although its climax was the world premiere of the first two chapters of the series <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cien-anos-de-soledad-la-serie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced by Netflix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, 2024 hosted the most important biannual meetings of Cuban culture: The 28th Alicia Alonso International Ballet Festival of Havana and the 15th International Biennial of Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important dance event in Cuba had to overcome the two collapses of the National Electric Power System (SEN) and the passage of Hurricanes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/al-menos-seis-muertos-deja-oscar-a-su-paso-por-el-oriente-de-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Oscar<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/huracan-rafael\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Rafael<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Festival brought back to the Cuban scene the classic \u201cSwan Lake,\u201d which had not been presented in its entirety in our country since 2018, but perhaps one of the greatest achievements of this 28th edition was the great inclusion of Cuban companies of different styles in its program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Havana Biennial began on November 15 and is just halfway through. Its program runs until February 28. Under the motto \u201cShared Universes,\u201d the curatorship has focused on building spaces for dialogue, social transformation, and experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although music is the manifestation that hosted the most events in 2024, it is important to highlight the diversity among them. From those dedicated to popular music (perhaps the most popular themselves) such as the Fiesta del Tambor, the Salsa Festival, or the Varadero Josone; to the more classical ones, such as the Havana Contemporary Music Festival and the Mozart-Habana, without forgetting those that are important platforms for the rescue, promotion, and growth of other genres such as the Longina Canta a Corona National Meeting of Singers-songwriters in Villa Clara, the Pepe S\u00e1nchez Trova Festival in Santiago de Cuba, the Eyeife Havana International Electronic Music Festival, or the International Havana Danz\u00f3n Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the field of music, Cubadisco 2024 stands out. Although the most important event and fair in the Cuban music industry is still far from being what it should be, the most important music event in Cuba, this year it showed better curatorship. The presence of Colombia as the guest of honor displayed a true cultural connectivity with a nation that not only has much to contribute, but is one of the most important international stages for Cuban music today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pianist Frank Fern\u00e1ndez, together with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, under the direction of Enrique P\u00e9rez Mesa, won the Grand Prize for the album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beethoven. Conciertos para piano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important events of all cultural manifestations and expressions also took place outside the capital. It would be worth mentioning the Ibero-American Congress of D\u00e9cima and Improvised Verse in Matanzas, the Romer\u00edas de Mayo in Holgu\u00edn, the Caribbean and Experimental Theatre festivals Desconectado a 969 in Santiago de Cuba, the Gibara International Film Festival in Holgu\u00edn, the Fiesta de la Cuban\u00eda in Granma, the Jos\u00e9 Antonio Aponte In Memoriam Meeting and Theatre Festival in Camag\u00fcey; and the Canch\u00e1nchara Festival in Trinidad, Sancti Sp\u00edritus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the events mentioned here are already established events, although with the constant challenge of not becoming stuck in time. But it is also important to look at those \u201cnewborns\u201d such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/mas-de-diez-djs-cubanas-cierran-la-segunda-edicion-del-eyeife-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Eyeife Women Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/ciencia\/medio-ambiente\/isla-verde-un-iceberg-en-el-fogoso-caribe\/\"><b>Isla Verde International Caribbean Film and Environment Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the Isla de la Juventud, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/discos-de-vinilo-festival-havana-rpm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Havana RPM Festival<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are arriving to offer more inclusive perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Timbalaye, Afropalabra and Satiric\u00f3n festivals, the Meeting of Ballet Teaching Academies, the Art in the Rampa and FIART craft fairs or Circuba Internacional were other events that took place in 2024 and that attest to the fact that there are few areas of art in Cuba that do not have an exclusive event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coraz\u00f3n Feliz International Meeting of Arts for Children deserves a special mention, the only major event dedicated to children that for four years has filled a space that had been empty for decades. Directed by Rochy Ameneiro and the duo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/ruben-dario-salazar-el-teatro-nacional-de-guinol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Rub\u00e9n Dar\u00edo Salazar<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Zenen Calero, the success of its two in-person editions (the first two were online due to the pandemic) has proven the great need that the public and artists had for a space of this type, not to mention the number of important creators from Latin America and Spain who have come to Havana for the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 911px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/22Abuelas-y-abuelos-prestados22-Self-portrait.-Monik-Molinet-08-911x1366.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cGrandmothers on loan,\u201d from the series \u201cGrandparents on loan\u201d (AP) on display at the 15th Havana Biennial. Photo: Courtesy of Mon\u00edk Molinet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Outside of \u201ceventism\u201d there is also life<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although events bring together a large number of presentations, many of them are of high quality and others unique, outside of them there is also a whole cultural agenda of constant activity in all areas of art.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A variation to highlight this year is the decrease in the number of active state cultural institutions or with quality in their proposals, including theaters, which in Havana are increasingly fewer. At the same time, the number of private spaces that host musical and humor presentations, exhibitions, audiovisual projections and many other cultural activities has grown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we review some great encounters with art that 2024 gave us, we have to remember the return to the Cuban stage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/teatro\/manteca-tebas-teatro-sarrain\/\"><b><i>Manteca<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the emblematic work of the Cuban actor and playwright Alberto Pedro, by the hand of Tebas Teatro; and of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/teatro\/de-tiempo-en-tiempo-yarini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>R\u00e9quiem por Yarini<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Carlos Felipe, another of the classics of Cuban theater, now in the vision of El P\u00fablico, under the direction of Carlos D\u00edaz.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/yarini1.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cR\u00e9quiem por Yarini,\u201d by Teatro El P\u00fablico. Photo: @mr_sad26_ph\/Taken from Instagram.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In music, singer-songwriter Pedro Luis Ferrer\u2019s short tour of stages in three Cuban provinces generated as much joy as debate. The F\u00e1brica de Arte Cubano (FAC) in Havana, the El Mejunje cultural center in Santa Clara, the Tom\u00e1s Terry Theater in Cienfuegos and the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theater of Cuba, in the capital, made possible the reunion of the author of \u201cEspuma y arena\u201d with an audience whose desire to enjoy him was always there and was revived in 2023 with his two concerts at the National Museum of Fine Arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premieres and debuts are often news, especially when they meet or exceed expectations. That happened this year with the world premiere of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the new piece by Susana Pous for Micompa\u00f1\u00eda, a group that the Spaniard created and directs in Cuba, and which is one of the most recognized dance groups in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pous herself was also involved in another of the important debuts of the year. Acosta Danza Yunior, the new artistic project of Cuban dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta, had its stage birth in February, and its inaugural repertoire included the premiere of Susana\u2019s \u201cFuga.\u201d The group is made up of 10 dancers between 18 and 20 years old, graduates of the company\u2019s academy founded by Acosta in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other important presentations were associated with the creative motivation that anniversaries always bring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Folklore Group celebrated its 62nd anniversary, and celebrated with the premiere of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comunidad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tribute to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciclo Congo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first show of the emblematic group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danza Contempor\u00e1nea de Cuba took up \u201cCarmina Burana,\u201d one of its most recognized works, as part of the actions for the 65th anniversary of the company\u2019s foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Ballet of Cuba dedicated a Gala to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/danza\/viengsay-valdes-tres-decadas-de-acero-y-nube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>30 years of professional artistic life of first dancer Viengsay Vald\u00e9s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, general director of the institution, and who starred on stage in the special presentation interpreting some of her greatest hits, such as \u201cSleeping Beauty\u201d and \u201cLove, Fear, Loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/viengsay8-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Viengsay Vald\u00e9s in \u201cSleeping Beauty,\u201d one of the most moving moments of the gala, held in the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater of Cuba. Taken from the Danza P\u00fablica Facebook page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Museum of Fine Arts closed its tribute to the 100th anniversary of the death of the Valencian painter Joaqu\u00edn Sorolla with a digital exhibition, and paid tribute to the 110th anniversary of the birth of Cundo Berm\u00fadez with an exhibition of works treasured by the institution of the man who is considered the last master of the Cuban avant-garde.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teatro de Las Estaciones, created and directed by the National Theater Prize winners Rub\u00e9n Dar\u00edo Salazar and Zenen Calero, turned 30 years old. To their unstoppable work they added the unique show \u201cCuatro estaciones para un retablo,\u201d which in the Havana National Museum of Fine Arts brought together the cast of the group with Freddy Maragoto, B\u00e1rbara Llanes and Rochy Ameneiro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban music train, Los Van Van, also experienced important moments this year. In February they became the first popular music group to perform at F\u00e1brica de Arte Cubano. FAC dedicated one of its emblematic stars to Juan Formell just 10 years after his death; and on December 4th <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/55-anos-en-modo-van-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u201cLa Maquinar\u00eda\u201d turned \u201c55 years\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they themselves named their campaign, and they celebrated it with the greatest conjunction they have achieved with Cuban plastic artists of all generations, who created and exhibited their tribute pieces together at La Lavander\u00eda, which of course played to the rhythm of live songo.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/vanvan.jpg\" alt=\"Los Van Van celebrated their 55th anniversary, surrounded by the love and admiration of friends and followers. Photo: Courtesy of Van Van.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Cuba: a stage that many prefer and an art that the world awaits<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many creators visited and performed on Cuban stages in punctual and unique performances, but which also mark milestones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among them are: jazz pianist, composer and music producer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/pianista-estadounidense-robert-glasper-no-deja-indiferentes-a-su-paso-por-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Robert Glasper<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Colombian group Ghetto Kumb\u00e9; the Metro Big Band, a U.S. group directed by Camp Kirkland; the singer, composer and actress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/una-noche-en-la-habana-con-laurin-talese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Laurin Talese<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba-ee-uu\/de-nuevo-en-cuba-la-orquesta-de-jazz-de-la-universidad-de-harvard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Harvard University Jazz Orchestra<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Argentine accordionist and composer Chango Spasiuk; the Spanish singer Argentina, and Bocafloja, one of the most important voices in the Spanish-speaking hip-hop scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Cubans also left their mark throughout the world. Dance had many opportunities to show its level on stages around the world, and took advantage of them. The leading company of Cuban dance, the National Ballet of Cuba, was in countries such as Puerto Rico, Spain, Portugal (after 24 years), and China; although some of its leading figures also starred in other important moments outside the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first dancer Dani Hern\u00e1ndez participated in a series of four galas named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les \u00c9toiles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Rome, Italy; while the first dancer and director of the National Ballet of Cuba, Viengsay Valdes, together with the emerging figure \u00c1nyelo Montero were part of the \u201cGrand Gala with the stars\u201d in Grosseto, Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, the creator of Acosta Danza, Carlos Acosta, brought the show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Before<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Sarasota Opera House, marking his return to the United States since 2018; and he presented the piece <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folclor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 in Catalonia. His new company, Acosta Danza Yunior, which debuted at the beginning of the year in Havana, had its international debut in the United Kingdom in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/danza\/lizt-alfonso-habana-fenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Lizt Alfonso<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dance Cuba took her new work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba Vibra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on an extensive and notable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/lizt-alfonso-lleva-a-madrid-y-barcelona-su-nuevo-espectaculo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>tour of Europe<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; while the Spanish Ballet of Cuba toured several cities in China with the work \u201cYo soy Cuba\u201d; and the Camag\u00fcey ballet was in Central America with a concert program of its traditional repertoire.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1093px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cuba-vibra-josep-guindo-6-1093x1366.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.\" width=\"1093\" height=\"1366\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cuba-vibra-josep-guindo-15-1366x768.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.\" width=\"1366\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/cuba-vibra-josep-guindo-16-1366x769.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.\" width=\"1366\" height=\"769\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cCuba Vibra.\u201d Photo: Josep Guindo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the visual arts, there were exhibitions of Cuban art at the Mohamed VI Museum in Rabat, Morocco, the Galeria 10\/10 in Mexico City, the McMullen Museum of Art in Boston and the Patricia &amp; Phillip Frost-FIU Art Museum in Miami, taking a look at collective exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a personal level, it is worth highlighting Carlos Garaicoa\u2019s first exhibition in Italy; Wilfredo Prieto\u2019s participation in the 60th International Exhibition of the Venice Biennale and the exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00edo en mis Jardines<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Cuban painter Zaida del R\u00edo in Tampa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most universal of Cuban painters also had to be looked at again from various parts of the world. Hong Kong hosted the first major Asian retrospective of the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam and the Gary Nader Art Centre gallery in Miami dedicated a retrospective to the painter of \u201cLa Jungla.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The seventh art also left its mark on the world. From Cimafunk at the White House, Los Mu\u00f1equitos de Matanzas in Italy, Guido L\u00f3pez Gavil\u00e1n with a world premiere in Panama, to the Original de Manzanillo Orchestra and Alain P\u00e9rez at the Salsa al Parque Festival in Colombia. All genres of Cuban music and the vast majority of our musicians had the opportunity to perform abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unforgettable album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buena Vista Social Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was included in the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame, at the request of the Latin Recording Academy of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Saying goodbye<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than thirty figures from the arts in different areas died in 2024. News that often became a real shock due to the unexpected death of figures such as actress Corina Mestre, actor Carlos Massola, director V\u00edctor Alfonso, photographer Jos\u00e9 Antonio Medina \u201cPep\u00edn el Obrero\u201d or filmmaker Jonal Cosculluela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a doubt, in this sense, the greatest impact generated in the artistic community and the public was the murder of reggaeton singer Jos\u00e9 Manuel Carvajal \u201cEl Taiger,\u201d one of the most established exponents of the genre who in his more than 15-year career never stopped being followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No less painful was the departure of important legendary figures of our culture, with whom we feel that we are also saying goodbye to an era and a way of making and understanding art: the iconic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/opinion\/columnas\/on-decimas\/anecdotario-de-juana-bacallao-en-decimas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Juana Bacallao<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the great dance master Ramona de Sa\u00e1, the playwright Nelson Dorr, the filmmaker Sergio Giral, the musicologist Laura Vilar, the composer Marta Vald\u00e9s, the trumpeter Luis Manuel Mirabal V\u00e1zquez \u201cEl Guajiro Mirabal\u201d and the stage designer Eduardo Arrocha, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cuban art, trophy in hand<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On and off the island, the recognition of the value of Cuban art was not only applause. But if we have to talk about winners in 2024, we must start with the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Mujer Salvaje<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Al\u00e1n Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film was the best Cuban fiction feature screened on the island during 2023 according to the Cuban Association of Cinematographic Press; it was the Grand Prize winner of the second edition of the Kinolatino Film Festival in Belgium; it took home the trophy for the best work of fiction at the Panama International Human Rights Film Festival and won the Luc\u00eda Award for the best fiction feature at the 18th Gibara International Film Festival. Its protagonist, Cuban actress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/gente\/lola-amores-actriz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Lola Amores<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, deserved the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/lola-amores-se-consagra-en-el-festival-de-malaga-como-mejor-actriz-femenina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Silver Biznaga Award for Best Female Performance<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Malaga Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amores was also deserving of the award for best actress at the Havana Film Festival in New York and an Honorable Mention for best actress at the Puerto Rico Film Festival for her performance in the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Una noche con los Rolling Stones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by director Patricia Ramos, a film that won the Best International Feature Film at the Puerto Rican festival itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/lola-amores-actriz-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Still from \u201cLa mujer salvaje.\u201d\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still from \u201cLa mujer salvaje.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other winners of Cuban cinema were Andrea Doimeadios for Best Leading Actress at the Fine Arts Film Festival Made in the Dominican Republic, an event that dedicated the posthumous award for best leading actor to Alexis D\u00edaz de Villegas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban director Marcos D\u00edaz won the award for Best First Film at the 39th Guadalajara International Film Festival with his work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fen\u00f3menos naturales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cuba-Argentina-France); and Cuban independent filmmaker Miguel Coyula won, with his work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cr\u00f3nicas de lo absurdo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the award for Best Film at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, there was also no shortage of recognition in different parts of the world for Cuban musicians. Singer-songwriter Silvio Rodr\u00edguez was recognized with one of the medals awarded by the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE), an institution that also awarded the Tom\u00e1s Luis de Victoria award to the Cuban composer and orchestra conductor Tania Le\u00f3n; the singer and guitarist Eliades Ochoa received the La Mar de M\u00fasicas award in Cartagena; and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was awarded the Kennedy Center Medal in Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Latin Grammys are always an eagerly awaited moment in which Cuban music also stands out, although it should be noted that 2024 was not the best time for artists residing in Cuba. Paquito D\u2019Rivera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Aymee Nuviola, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/cimafunk-te-trae-la-vitamina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cimafunk<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Alex Cuba, Hilario Dur\u00e1n, Renecito Avich and Rafael \u201cPollo\u201d Brito were among the Cuban artists nominated in different categories, although producers and composers such as Alden Gonz\u00e1lez, Geovanis Alc\u00e1ntara and Vicente Garc\u00eda were also nominated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of these, Hilario Dur\u00e1n won the 2024 Latin Grammy in the Best Arrangement category for the song \u201cNight in Tunisia\u201d in which Paquito D\u2019Rivera also participates; producers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/alden-gonzalez-tres-grammy-latinos-un-disco-de-boleros-y-el-desamor-por-el-son-en-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Alden Gonz\u00e1lez<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Geovanis Alc\u00e1ntara for their work on the album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodando por el mundo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/jose-alberto-el-canario-al-bolero-debo-muchos-momentos-de-felicidad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Jos\u00e9 Alberto \u201cEl Canario,\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which won the Best Traditional Tropical Album, and which also featured other Cuban guests such as Pablo Milan\u00e9s, the String Quartet and the Wind Quintet of the Eastern Symphony Orchestra, Alexander Abreu and the groups Los Guanches, Magic Sax Quartet and the Azabache Orchestra of Cuba. Children\u2019s Theatre Company La Colmenita <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/premio-nacional-de-cultura-comunitaria-2024-para-carlos-alberto-cremata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Carlos Alberto Cremata<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the actor and director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/fresa-o-chocolate-jorge-perugorria-se-confiesa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Jorge Perugorr\u00eda<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:
