Cuban-American Congressman Carlos Gim\u00e9nez asked the Trump administration this Thursday to eliminate remittances to Cuba and flights connecting the United States and the island, with the goal of further stifling the country\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a <\/span>letter published<\/b><\/a> today, Gim\u00e9nez said that the <\/span>economic, commercial and financial embargo<\/b><\/a> that Washington has maintained against the island for more than 60 years is not enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Florida Republican called for the elimination of all travel from the United States to Cuba, as well as the elimination of remittances from Americans to family or friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement to <\/span>Fox News Digital<\/i><\/b><\/a>, Gim\u00e9nez stated that the current Cuban government would come to an end if remittances are cut and any measures are taken to further tighten the economic siege that the United States has historically maintained against Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the letter, addressed to Treasury Secretary <\/span>Scott Bessent<\/b><\/a>, the congressman said that Cuba presents \u201ca clear threat to the safety of the United States and our citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Praise for Trump\u2019s measures<\/b><\/p>\n

He also praised the Trump administration for the decline in relations between the two countries and for reversing the Obama administration\u2019s thaw policies, which he described as \u201cdisastrous appeasement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe applaud and welcome the administration\u2019s most recent policies to ban vessels arriving from Communist Cuba at U.S. ports, but more must be done,\u201d he wrote in the document.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From his Twitter account, he stated that \u201cPresident Trump has been the best ally the Cuban people have ever had, and now is the time to cut off all sources of income for [Cuba].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gim\u00e9nez urged Bessent to take \u201cswift and decisive action in halting all travel to and from Communist Cuba and eliminate the flow of remittances to the island.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The congressman used a phrase that has been repeated frequently in the White House regarding Cuba: \u201cThe time is now,\u201d to refer to the United States\u2019 interest in overthrowing the Cuban government.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have never sent one penny to Cuba\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cMany relatives in Miami and the United States try to help their relatives and friends [residing in Cuba] as much as possible, and want to visit them from time to time,\u201d he told <\/span>Fox News Digital<\/span><\/i>, referring to Cuba as a threat to the United States. \u201cBut I\u2019ve never gone \u2013 [until] a month ago in <\/span>Guant\u00e1namo<\/b><\/a>. I\u2019ve never gone back to visit any family. I\u2019ve never sent one penny to Cuba for anything during my time in the United States; over 60 years,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gim\u00e9nez\u2019s request follows one made last February by Florida Republican Senator <\/span>Rick Scott<\/b><\/a>, who also advocated for restricting flights between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people travel to Cuba, those close to the government, primarily the military, benefit,\u201d he noted at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time, <\/span>CBS News Miami<\/span><\/i> interviewed several Cuban-Americans traveling on a flight from Miami to Havana, who stated that these measures make life more difficult for their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carlos Gim\u00e9nez\u2019s obsession with Cuba<\/b><\/p>\n

Since arriving in Congress, Carlos Gim\u00e9nez\u2019s policy has focused on preventing any rapprochement between Washington and Havana, and he has expressed his interest in overthrowing the Cuban government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last March, he sent another letter, this time to the Secretary of Homeland Security, in which he asserted the <\/span>presence of \u201cagents of the regime\u201d in the United States<\/b><\/a> and requested their deportation.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time in 64 years, Gim\u00e9nez traveled to Cuba in early March to visit the Guant\u00e1namo Bay Naval Base.<\/span><\/p>\n

On social media, he stated at the time that the territory illegally occupied by the United States in the eastern part of the country is \u201cthe only free part of Cuba.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
