Renowned Cuban pianist and composer <\/span>Chucho Vald\u00e9s has been honored with the 2025 Jazz Master Award, the highest honor for a jazz musician in the United States<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the first time a foreign Latin American artist has received this distinction, which is presented annually by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>awards ceremony will be held next Saturday, April 26<\/b>, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, during the traditional annual concert organized by the NEA, reported Prensa Latina news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with <\/span>Vald\u00e9s<\/b><\/a>, three other prominent exponents of U.S. jazz will be recognized: saxophonist Marshall Allen, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and music critic Gary Giddins, all honored for their exceptional contributions to the genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chucho Vald\u00e9s, considered the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz, currently resides in the United States, adding yet another recognition to his extensive career.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chucho Vald\u00e9s and the 2025 Leonard Bernstein Award<\/b><\/p>\n

Chucho Vald\u00e9s received the\u00a02025 Leonard Bernstein Award<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for Lifetime Achievement from the\u00a0Longy School of Music<\/strong><\/a> in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

This last accolade was presented by Karen Zorn, president of Longy, and Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the celebrated composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein.<\/span><\/p>\n

In justifying its decision, the institution emphasized that Vald\u00e9s \u201cembodies many of the key values <\/span>\u200b\u200b<\/span>cultivated at Longy, including the freedom to explore, creative thinking and innovation, and the joy of making and sharing music with others.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Vald\u00e9s, 83, has a career spanning more than six decades in which he has masterfully fused elements of Afro-Cuban, jazz, classical, rock, and other musical genres, giving rise to a unique and deeply personal style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout his career, he has excelled as a soloist and bandleader. He was also the <\/span>founder of the influential group <\/b>Irakere<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born on October 9, 1941, into a family of musicians, his training began as a child under the guidance of his father, the legendary Bebo Vald\u00e9s, and his mother, Pilar Rodr\u00edguez, a singer and piano teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the numerous accolades he has received throughout his career are the <\/span>Cuban National Music Prize (2020), 13 Grammy Awards<\/b> \u2014 including seven Latin Grammys \u2014 and his induction into the <\/span>Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame<\/b> in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
