At the beginning, he performed songs by world pop celebrities such as Ricky Martin and Chayanne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2005, after moving to Havana in search of work opportunities, Papushi, as he is known in the artistic world, recorded his first two songs under the musical production of Ernesto Blanco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSexy\u201d was his debut song on Radio Cadena Habana, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soy Papushi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2007) was his first solo album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2009, he joined the roster of the Barbarito Diez Provincial Music Company of Las Tunas as a professional singer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He then returned to Havana, where he recorded his second album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Como un ni\u00f1o bueno<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between those beginnings and his recent win at the Premio Tejano Mundial in the Cumbia Pop Song of the Year category (2025), there\u2019s a long and arduous journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_322321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-322321\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/papushi2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-322321\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/papushi2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/papushi2.jpeg 597w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/papushi2-202x300.jpeg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-322321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Courtesy of the interviewee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Your beginnings were filled with a lot of activity in terms of music and the places you visited throughout Cuba. What memories stand out from those early years?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was 2002. I went to a disco bar in Holgu\u00edn where they held karaoke competitions as part of a show. The friends I\u2019d gone with told me to go ahead and sing; they knew I really liked music, but I\u2019d never sung in public. I did so with the song \u201cLaura no est\u00e1,\u201d a hit by the Italian singer Nek, and it was so well received that I returned to that place night after night, eager to sing again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision I made when I moved to Havana, a place completely unknown to me and very different from Holgu\u00edn, took me a little time to adapt to, but I had to do it. I wanted to begin my professional career in music. That was in April 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you had to briefly describe how your career has developed from the beginning to the present, what would you say?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been a journey of great perseverance, total dedication, and a lot of sacrifice. You ended up transforming Selena\u2019s Tex-Mex into urban music with the 2018 release of the album <\/b><b><i>Por siempre Selena<\/i><\/b><b>. Why did you decide to venture into such different genres?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were different stages of my life. I\u2019ve been in music for 20 years now, and I initially wanted to experiment with dance and house, then urban, bachata, pop ballads, and others, until recently arriving at the Tex-Mex genre. The truth is, I like to test myself as a performer, to feel like I can do different genres. Maybe I was looking for the style I felt best with, but I\u2019ve liked them all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What musical genre do you prefer?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a doubt, Tex-Mex cumbia, which is what I\u2019ve been doing for over a year. It was the first musical genre I became interested in as a child, through Selena\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019ve also written songs for singers like Yolie, Yenisey del Castillo, Rafael Esp\u00edn and Leyanis L\u00f3pez. They\u2019ve become hits. Between writing and performing, which facet do you enjoy the most?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I love writing. It doesn\u2019t matter if there are many songs already written that haven\u2019t been recorded; composing is a form of expression that comes from my soul and heart. Almost everything I write I\u2019ve lived and felt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What do you consider to be the hallmark of your lyrics and performances?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling. Then I suggest to the singer what I think would fit them. I did that from 2013 to 2021. After that, I dedicated myself more to writing for myself. Doing both at the same time took up a lot of my time; singers are very demanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Among the achievements you\u2019ve reached during your two-decade career was the song \u201cBailando con Juana\u201d (2017), a duet with Juana Bacallao. It became a radio hit, as well as <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pistacubana.com\/artista\/153299\/Papushi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>number one on the Pistacubana website<\/b><\/a><b> and the annual Los Lucas video. Has there been another moment like that that you consider a turning point in your career?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes; it was in 2015, when I achieved my first success composing for other artists in Cuba. The ranchera-pop ballad <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gfzlv1OcDy8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u201cTe borr\u00e9 de mi vida,\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performed by Leyanis L\u00f3pez, became a hit in Cuba, despite the fact that this musical genre isn\u2019t very common on the island\u2019s music scene. After two years writing songs for Cuban singers, that song gave me the recognition I needed as a composer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who have been the main musical influences, both Cuban and foreign, in your career?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I admire many Cuban and international artists, but Selena is the main inspiration in my music. There are also others like Celia Cruz, Benny Mor\u00e9, Gloria Estefan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/paulito-fg-sin-fecha-de-vencimiento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paulo FG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Juan Gabriel, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/las-joyas-ineditas-de-un-guajiro-llamado-polo-montanez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polo Monta\u00f1ez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Madonna, Luis Miguel, Ricky Martin, and many more. Although they have different styles and eras, they are exemplary artists to follow in music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What collaboration did you really want to achieve, and did it come to fruition?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always wanted to unite my voice with Selena\u2019s, because she is my inspiration in music, but she was no longer physically with me. But thanks to technology, in 2016, the first duet I made with her was released: her hit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xbe_aJI_mAo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u201cSi una vez,\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with music producer Carlos Lara \u201cEl Anarkiologo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then came two more duets of the songs \u201cComo la flor\u201d and \u201cNo debes jugar\u201d; in which we experimented with the urban genre. It was a dream come true, especially because of the acceptance it achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What has been the biggest challenge you\u2019ve faced since beginning your career?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To never give up on anything or anyone, and to always defend what I believe in and what I want to achieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do you long for public recognition?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Tex-Mex singer, I think I\u2019m achieving it, both in Cuba and in Texas and Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>After the release of albums like <\/b><b><i>Por siempre Selena<\/i><\/b><b> (2018) and <\/b><b><i>El irrepetible<\/i><\/b><b> (2020), you\u2019ll release <\/b><b><i>El rey del tex-mex<\/i><\/b><b> in February 2024. On this compilation, you included the song \u201cTe digo adi\u00f3s,\u201d which a few months ago received the Premio Tejano Mundial in the Cumbia Pop Song of the Year category (2025). What does it mean to you to be the first Cuban to win an award in this competition?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s very important. I still can\u2019t believe it. It\u2019s a sign that this is the path I should follow in music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you feel it as a personal or collective victory?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both. Personally, if I hadn\u2019t decided to make this album, it wouldn\u2019t have been released and I wouldn\u2019t have won the award. But it\u2019s also a collective victory. Music producer Carlos Cartaya did a great job on this album. Other people supported me and believed in me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cTe digo adi\u00f3s\u201d was one of five songs nominated in the category during the fifth edition of the event, which recognizes Tejano music hits worldwide and was held in San Antonio, Texas, United States. What\u2019s next for Papushi\u2019s artistic career after achieving this triumph?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finishing my album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El rey del tex-mex<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which I decided to name in honor of Selena, the queen. Then, I want to tour Texas and Mexico first, and maybe this year, perform a duet with Alicia Villarreal, the queen of Regional Mexicano, who knows my work and has shown admiration for
