
{"id":324379,"date":"2025-06-13T18:26:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T22:26:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=324379"},"modified":"2025-06-13T18:26:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T22:26:26","slug":"all-the-presidents-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/usa\/all-the-presidents-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"All the president\u2019s refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>1<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sahistory.org.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>South African History Online,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cthe modern Afrikaner descends from Western Europeans who settled in the southern tip of Africa in the mid-17th century. A mix of Dutch (34.8%), German (33.7%) and French (13.2%) settlers formed a cultural group that completely identified itself with the African soil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But by putting down roots in Africa, Afrikaners, like other white communities, forced the original inhabitants off their lands through violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrikaners are also known as Boers, a word meaning \u201cfarmer,\u201d and the group is still closely tied to agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1948, the Afrikaner-led South African government introduced apartheid, taking racial segregation to an extreme level. Among other things, they passed laws prohibiting interracial marriages, reserving skilled jobs for whites and forcing the Black population to live in townships and homelands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>2<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On February 7, President Donald Trump issued an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/addressing-egregious-actions-of-the-republic-of-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>executive order<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cutting all U.S. financial aid to South Africa and accusing its authorities of mistreating white Afrikaner farmers and confiscating their land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The document asserts that President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s government is encouraging \u201cdisproportionate violence against racially disadvantaged landowners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Trump\u2019s closest advisors at the time, South African Elon Musk, claimed that a \u201cwhite genocide\u201d was taking place in the country and accused the government of passing \u201cracist property laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South African President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepresidency.gov.za\/node\/197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cyril Ramaphosa<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told Trump during a phone call that his assessment of the situation was \u201cnot true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>3<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A first group of white South Africans, numbering 59, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telemundo.com\/noticias\/noticias-telemundo\/inmigracion\/sudafricanos-blancos-llega-eeuu-refugiados-protegidos-trump-afrikaners-rcna206400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>arrived in the United States<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on May 12 with refugee status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Trump said the Afrikaner minority\u2019s applications had been processed expeditiously because they were victims of \u201cracial discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They received a warm welcome. Refugee processing typically takes months, even years. But in this group\u2019s case, it was processed in record time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South African government reiterated that the new arrivals were not suffering any persecution that would justify granting refugee status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA refugee is someone who has to leave their country out of fear of political persecution, religious persecution, or economic persecution,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crljn5046epo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>said<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAnd they don&#8217;t fit that bill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global civil society actors joined him. Human Rights Watch called the measure \u201ccruel racial manipulation,\u201d stating that thousands of people, many of them African and Afghan, had been denied refuge in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the domestic front, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meeks.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Gregory Meeks,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that the Trump administration\u2019s refugee resettlement \u201cnot just a racist dog whistle, it&#8217;s a politically motivated rewrite of history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Episcopal Church declared that it would not collaborate with the federal government in resettling South Africans due to the \u201cpreferential treatment\u201d they had been given.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/refugeerights.org\/people\/melissa-keaney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Melissa Keaney<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of the International Refugee Assistance Project, stated that the White House\u2019s decision to fast-track the arrival of Afrikaners amounted to \u201ca lot of hypocrisy and unequal treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her organization is suing the Trump administration following the indefinite suspension of the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) in January. This policy has left more than 120,000 conditionally approved refugees in limbo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Afrikaner writer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/max-du-preez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Max du Preez<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> declared that the accusations of persecution of white South Africans were a \u201ctotal absurdity&#8221; and &#8220;based on nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>4<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week after the group\u2019s arrival, President Ramaphosa visited the White House to try to cool relations between the two countries. But Trump publicly harassed him with the same mantra. And even worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a further act of bullying, the president played a video in the Oval Office showing the burial sites of more than 1,000 white farmers. \u201cThis is very bad,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are cemeteries, right here. Cemeteries, over a thousand, of white farmers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa\u2019s top law enforcement official, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.za\/about-government\/contact-directory\/police-ministry\/senzo-mchunu-mr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Senzo Mchunu,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that the president distorted the facts to push a false narrative about the mass murders of white people in his country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe respect the president of the United States\u2026but we absolutely do not respect his history of genocide,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about Mchunu\u2019s remarks, the White House recalled Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt\u2019s comments the day before at her briefing, when she said that the video showed crosses representing the bodies of people who were racially targeted by the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the crosses did not mark graves or burial sites. They were a temporary memorial erected in 2020 to protest the murders of farmers in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were placed during a funeral procession in memory of a white couple killed during a robbery on their farm, Mchunu said. Both a son of that couple and several members of the local community argued that the crosses were not cemeteries and were removed after the protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the accusers didn\u2019t care about the facts when repeating the litany. Mchunu announced that of the more than 5,700 homicides that occurred in South Africa between January and March of this year, six were on farms, and of those, only one victim was white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A former South African legislator went further. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.org.za\/person\/lourens-lemmer-bosman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Lourens Bosman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed to have participated in the procession shown in the video played by Trump. It happened near the city of Newcastle, in the eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, in September 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crosses symbolized the white and Black farmers and farmworkers who had been murdered across South Africa over the past 26 years, Bosman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This campaign of opportunism and disinformation has circulated among far-right groups for many years. In his first term, Trump referred to the \u201clarge-scale slaughter of farmers\u201d in South Africa. This is merely a recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>5<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrikaners number more than 2.5 million out of a population of more than 60 million. They represent approximately 4% of the total. None of South Africa\u2019s political parties, including those that represent them, have claimed that a genocide is taking place in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaco Kleynhans, a senior official with the Afrikaner Solidarity lobby group, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JacoKleynhans\/status\/1930929807698649565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>claimed<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to have informed U.S. officials that \u201cthere is no genocide nor land confiscation by the government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A South African judge dismissed the idea of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genocide, calling it \u201cclearly imaginary\u201d and \u201cunreal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key question, then, is why the Trump administration has suspended virtually all refugee admissions for those fleeing famine and war from places like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, conversely, why has it facilitated the entry of Afrikaners. This is the white ethnic minority that seized power in 1948 and led the apartheid regime in South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is in the wind.
