A public oral trial for the <\/span>crime of drug trafficking, specifically synthetic cannabinoids \u2014 popularly known as \u201cqu\u00edmico\u201d<\/b> \u2014 took place in the First Criminal Chamber of the Matanzas Provincial People\u2019s Court.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to information published by the newspaper <\/span>Gir\u00f3n<\/i><\/b><\/a>, the trial is part of the zero tolerance policy for these types of crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Provincial Prosecutor\u2019s Office requested a nine-year prison sentence for the defendant, YGR, 22, a native of San Miguel del Padr\u00f3n and Havana resident.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the text, which identifies the suspects only by their initials, YGR <\/span>acquired the drugs in Havana, made homemade cigarettes and sold them in the city of<\/b> C\u00e1rdenas<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second suspect, identified as AVU, alias \u201cEl Abuelito,\u201d 24, and a resident of C\u00e1rdenas, faces a request for eight years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the investigation, AVU <\/span>had been reselling this drug for some time at a price of 300 Cuban pesos per unit.<\/b><\/p>\n

The prosecutor described the business as \u201clucrative but with a high social cost due to its harmful effects on human health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

YGR\u2019s arrest took place at the Bacunayagua checkpoint following an alert from the Matanzas Anti-Drug Section.<\/span><\/p>\n

Drug trafficking crime<\/b><\/h3>\n

The defendant <\/span>was found with 10.1 grams of synthetic drugs hidden in a backpack<\/b>, equivalent to more than a thousand cigarettes ready for sale, considering that a single gram can produce between 100 and 120 doses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both defendants face charges under Article 235.1, paragraph a) of the Penal Code, which punishes <\/span>trafficking in illicit drugs or substances with similar effects with penalties of between 4 and 10 years of imprisonment<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The parties will be notified of the sentence on July 17, according to the newspaper <\/span>Gir\u00f3n<\/span><\/i>. Once the court\u2019s decision is issued, <\/span>the defendants and the Prosecutor\u2019s Office will have the right to file an appeal for cassation, in case of disagreement<\/b>, so that the case can be reviewed by the Supreme People\u2019s Court, the country\u2019s highest judicial instance.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
