Even the drying facility and mill of the Camilo Cienfuegos Basic Business Unit (UEB) have been paralyzed since 2022 after being damaged by Hurricane Ian. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After years of growth in the past decade, Cuban rice production has suffered a notable decline amid the island\u2019s deep economic crisis. Last year, only a little more than half of what was planted in 2018 was planted, and about 80,000 tons were harvested, less than a third of what was produced then and barely 11% of domestic demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is at this point that all eyes have turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/tag\/los-palacios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Palacios<\/a>. There, as in other areas of Cuba, authorities are trying to revitalize the rice harvest with the support of Vietnam, one of the world\u2019s leading producers. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Los Palacios, the Vietnamese company Agri VMA became the first foreign entity \u2014 at least according to public reports \u2014 to receive Cuban land in usufruct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/cuba-entrega-tierras-por-tres-anos-a-empresa-vietnamita-para-produccion-de-arroz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>broke last January<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the project has been underway for two years. Now, with the harvest of its first crops and the release of its results, it has returned to the spotlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, the project remains small. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island\u2019s authorities, who have described the project as \u201cstrategic,\u201d have not hidden their enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/proyecto-arrocero-en-pinar-del-rio-con-resultados-que-se-parecen-a-los-de-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>stated that the results \u201care similar to those in Vietnam\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u201care very encouraging.\u201d However, he acknowledged difficulties related to the energy crisis and the deterioration of technology, for which he said, \u201cquick solutions\u201d were being sought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the expected benefits are achieved, the agreement with Agri VMA could be replicated in other areas of a country that imported more than 400,000 tons of rice in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, if there are no setbacks along the way \u2014 something not uncommon on the island \u2014 what is happening in Los Palacios could be a good step toward a gradual recovery of rice production in Cuba.
