
{"id":325487,"date":"2025-07-08T17:23:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T21:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=325487"},"modified":"2025-07-08T17:23:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T21:23:01","slug":"life-on-the-razors-edge-the-case-of-willliam-and-viviana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/usa\/life-on-the-razors-edge-the-case-of-willliam-and-viviana\/","title":{"rendered":"Life on the razor\u2019s edge: the case of Willliam and Viviana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1980, during the Mariel incident, a young couple was sitting on a park bench in a town in rural Havana, not far from that location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An older man informed them that the Cubans in Miami were sending for relatives and that Fidel Castro\u2019s government was letting everyone leave, even if they had no family ties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2020\/Jul\/02\/2002356759\/-1\/-1\/0\/CAMARIOCA1965.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Camarioca<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d he told them, referring to the exodus of 3,000 Cubans, roughly speaking, that took place between September and November 1965 through the town of Matanzas of the same name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William and Viviana<\/span><sup><b>1<\/b><\/sup><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were put on one of those boats after declaring themselves \u201cantisocial elements\u201d to the authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>2<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami wasn\u2019t easy. There weren\u2019t many job offers amidst a widespread rejection of the \u201cMarielitos,\u201d a new term that would become part of the vocabulary ever since, associated with negative stereotypes about Cuban immigration.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Mariel Boatlift of 1980\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q0vM6u1b6Hc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, it wasn\u2019t made up of white people of Spanish descent and middle-class immigrants, but primarily of darker skin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/opinion\/columns\/in-plain-words\/migratory-things-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>service workers.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> From April to October 1980, approximately 125,000 of our fellow citizens arrived in South Florida, which lacked the necessary infrastructure and services to accommodate them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William started working as a car washer, and Viviana as a cleaning lady in a Miami beauty salon. But life was difficult for them, as they had no family or friends willing to help them assimilate to the new environment. Then came bad decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>3<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Miami, the 1980s were marked by violence, corruption, and cocaine trafficking, driven primarily by Colombian drug cartels, especially in Medell\u00edn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar had established the city as a major hub for cocaine smuggling into the United States, surpassing the Cuban mafia, which had previously controlled drug trafficking in the state. In 1981, approximately 70% of the cocaine and 70% of the marijuana consumed in the entire Union passed through there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug trafficking fueled out-of-control violence, reflected in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarface<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1983), Brian de Palma\u2019s famous film in which Al Pacino plays a Marielito involved in the underworld. The 1979 shooting at the Dadeland Mall marked the beginning of the city\u2019s War on Drugs, when two Colombian drug traffickers shot two men in broad daylight. It was the origin of another very famous term at the time: Cocaine Cowboys.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Is this the best scene from the movie Scarface (HD)?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QBG8SDB1lF8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The homicide rate in Miami tripled. Most violent crimes were directly related to drug trafficking. It is said that in 1981, the city morgue became so overflowing that it had to rent a refrigerated truck to store corpses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William knew this, but he had decided to take a risk and sell drugs anyway. In the end, luck wasn\u2019t on his side. In November 1981, he had the misfortune of falling prey to an FBI operation thanks to the efficiency of an insider. They went to his small apartment in Hialeah, handcuffed him, and tried him. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>4<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1990s, when he was released from prison, the couple decided to leave Miami. With the savings they had in Viviana\u2019s bank account, they moved to a town in central Florida to start a new life. There, they bought a small Cuban food restaurant that allowed them to improve their lives a bit. She looked after it and took care of the details; he spent long hours away from home driving trucks, a difficult but well-paid job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They led a normal life and were happy. A house, two cars, and property. Finally, the American dream. Once a year, William had to report to an immigration office and exchange a few words with an officer, then return to his daily activities. William was a deportable foreigner, like 40,000 other Cubans scattered throughout the United States. Because he committed that crime, he was ineligible for the Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966, the path to first obtaining permanent residency after residing in the United States for a year and a day, and after five years, citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But under Trump, Cubans \u201cwouldn\u2019t have problems either\u201d; there\u2019s a reason they were so exceptional. A Florida International University poll released after the 2024 election found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cri.fiu.edu\/research\/fiu-cuba-poll\/the-2024-fiu-cuba-poll-report-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>68% of Cuban Americans<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had voted for the Republican candidate, almost double the number <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.fiu.edu\/2024\/fiu-cuba-poll-2024-cuban-american-voters-support-for-trump-at-an-all-time-high\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>in 2016<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8S6FWbu4eh\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/digital-channel\/gallery\/the-border-of-the-american-dream-elections\/\">The border of the American dream: Elections<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;The border of the American dream: Elections&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/digital-channel\/gallery\/the-border-of-the-american-dream-elections\/embed\/#?secret=Vc9jLcRFkr#?secret=8S6FWbu4eh\" data-secret=\"8S6FWbu4eh\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William was among those who supported him, even though he couldn\u2019t vote. What he liked most was his determination and his \u201chard line against communists.\u201d Not just \u201cinfiltrators in the Democratic Party,\u201d like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, but also those who have been in power on the island for nearly seven decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>6<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At one point, he began to perceive a worrying shift. The Trump administration was serious about the idea of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carrying out the largest mass deportation in history, with White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/05\/28\/immigration-ice-deportations-stephen-miller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>pressuring Immigration and Customs Enforcement to increase arrests to 3,000 people a day<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And with the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem doing the same to cancel temporary immigration programs. Trump himself had signed several executive orders on the issue, one of them affecting Cubans arriving in the country thanks to the Biden administration\u2019s parole program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month, when he went to his routine annual appointment, the ICE officer assisting him politely informed him from the outset that his privilege had ended and that he would be deported to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To William and his wife, this seemed like a bad joke or a nightmare, after more than four decades living in the United States. After all, he had more than paid for that youthful mistake. And from then until now, he hadn\u2019t even had a ticket for running a red light. Or for driving under the influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To top it all off, he lacked family and friends in the obscure little town where he was born more than 60 years ago: he was able to get his mother and father out as soon as conditions allowed. And his two children were born in the United States. His son is a proud Marine; his daughter is an intensive care nurse at one of the nation\u2019s ten most important hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then William experienced what he defines as \u201cthe goodness of crime.\u201d The officer, as Cuban as he is, told him later in that meeting: \u201cOK, we\u2019re going to release you and give you 90 days to sort out your affairs and leave. If you don\u2019t, we\u2019ll deport you to a country in Africa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of June, the United States Supreme Court authorized the Trump administration to deport eight men to South Sudan who had been held for weeks at a U.S. military base in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yibuti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Djibouti<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/articles\/c628gend2v1o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Two of them are Cuban<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">________________________________________<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><sup>1 <\/sup><\/strong>We have protected the couple\u2019s real identity for privacy reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The officer, as Cuban as he was, told him: \u201cOK, we\u2019re going to release you and give you 90 days to sort out your affairs and leave.
