
{"id":327436,"date":"2025-08-22T21:03:35","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T01:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=327436"},"modified":"2025-08-22T21:07:00","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T01:07:00","slug":"alligator-alcatraz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/usa\/alligator-alcatraz\/","title":{"rendered":"Alligator Alcatraz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoted by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and supported by Governor Ron DeSantis, new words entered the U.S. political and media vocabulary in July 2024: Alligator Alcatraz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a facility designed to detain and imprison undocumented immigrants deep in the Everglades swamps for eventual deportation. It is symptomatically located less than 50 miles west of President Trump\u2019s residence in Palm Beach, Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its name obviously alludes to the legendary Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay, but is used to denote its remote location and tight security measures. \u201cWe had a request from the federal government to (create the facility), and so \u2018Alligator Alcatraz\u2019 it is,\u201d DeSantis said at a press conference, thus effectively adopting the nickname coined by his attorney general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The governor asserted that these facilities were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/01\/us\/what-is-alligator-alcatraz-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>\u201ctemporary and necessary\u201d<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ease the burden on law enforcement agencies and prisons. He said they would be a \u201cforce multiplier\u201d in the Trump administration\u2019s increasing efforts to detain and deport undocumented immigrants. \u201cClearly from a security perspective, if someone escapes, there\u2019s a lot of alligators you\u2019re going to have to contend (with),\u201d he emphasized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The center is supported primarily by funding provided by the Florida government. According to reports, the DeSantis administration has signed contracts worth around $245 million for its construction and operation. It is estimated to cost around <\/span><b>$450 million annually.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the federal government has provided funding for the Shelter and Services program, used to finance immigration detention centers. Although the state of Florida has fronted the cost, it is expected to recover it through reimbursements from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This fact already presents a first problem. The contracts for its construction and maintenance were awarded without public bidding, which has only generated criticism for a lack of transparency. Some have benefited companies linked to Republican politicians, with the potential conflicts of interest involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is a second problem: it was built in record time on an abandoned airstrip within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bicy\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Big Cypress National Preserve<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, without any environmental impact assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a third, no less important, aspect. Practically from its inception, various civil society organizations \u2014 human rights and environmental groups, among others \u2014 have expressed their criticism of the facility\u2019s inadequate conditions and legal and environmental implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, since its inauguration, testimonies from inmates and their families have highlighted the facility\u2019s poor conditions, including flooding, lack of access to and quality of food and hygiene problems, along with practices such as coercing detainees into signing deportation documents without legal representation. They have also alluded to the difficulties lawyers face in accessing their clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this last regard, the ACLU has filed a lawsuit alleging serious abuses and denial of due process. It has also requested <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/action.aclu.org\/send-message\/shut-down-alligator-alcatraz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>its closure.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Native Americans<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For generations, the wetlands of the southern Florida peninsula have served as home to the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes. \u201cRather than the Miccosukee homelands being an uninhabited wilderness for alligators and pythons, as some have suggested, Big Cypress is the tribe\u2019s traditional territory. The landscape has protected the Miccosukee and Seminole people for generations,\u201d Miccosukee Chairman Talbert Cypress said in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1032766\/alligator-alcatraz-construction-halted-but-native-heritage-remains-at-risk\/\"><b>a statement.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are approximately 15 Miccosukee and Seminole villages within a three-mile radius of Alligator Alcatraz. Nearby, about 1,000 feet away, is the Panther-Osceola Camp, where Native American members regularly host cultural activities and sacred ceremonies.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Miccosukee tribal member speaks out against &#039;Alligator Alcatraz&#039; detention center\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cSp8L7zqe6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, its wetlands and swamps are considered sacred to the Miccosukee people, who were forced into the Everglades in the 19th century. \u201cThis place became our refuge\u2026. It gives us a space to continue our culture and traditions. And we must protect it for future generations,\u201d said Miccosukee Tribe member <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ERm73pX1X88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Betty Osceola.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>A federal judge intervenes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three civil society organizations \u2014 Friends of the Everglades, the Center for Biological Diversity, and Earthjustice \u2014 filed a lawsuit accusing local and federal authorities of breaking the law by building Alligator Alcatraz without first conducting an environmental impact study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 14, the Miccosukee Tribe filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit, alleging that the center was built without prior tribal consultation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn addition to threatening endangered species like the Florida panther and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifeflorida.org\/es\/species-spotlight-the-florida-bonneted-bat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>bonneted bat,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the prison impinges on the Miccosukee Tribe\u2019s deep cultural and spiritual connections to the land surrounding the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, where the detention center was built,\u201d the lawsuit argues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It continues: \u201cLight and noise pollution, vehicular traffic, and other factors pose serious harm to the region\u2019s wetlands and ecosystem and could have adverse effects on potable water. These disturbances also interfere with the Tribe\u2019s right to use the land, including religious ceremonies and medicinal practices, as enshrined in the Everglades National Park Act and the Miccosukee Reserved Area Act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On August 7, a federal judge temporarily halted further construction of Alligator Alcatraz in response to a lawsuit citing the prison\u2019s risks to environmental diversity and Native American heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issued by Judge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsd.uscourts.gov\/content\/judge-kathleen-m-williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Kathleen Williams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Southern District Court of Florida, the order pauses further building activity including paving, fencing, and excavation on the site for two weeks. But it does not suspend operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another civil rights lawsuit, currently pending, alleges that those detained have been jailed without charges and blocked from meeting with lawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis development, while promising, unfortunately doesn\u2019t stop the camp or its use. However, it is a good example of how the camp might be closed permanently in the near future: through environmental advocacy, which was the collective activist effort that stopped the jetport from being finished back in the 1970s,\u201d,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemiscenter.org\/residents\/misael-soto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Misael Soto<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Artists 4 Artists Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the new bosses are persistent in their \u201cforce multipliers\u201d and have recently <\/span><b>announced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the opening of two new centers: the so-called Deportation Depot in Florida \u2014 a former prison with a capacity for 1,300 detainees \u2014 and the Cornhusker Clink in Nebraska, an old minimum-security camp with an initial capacity of 200 people.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On August 7, a federal judge temporarily halted the construction of Alligator Alcatraz in response to complaints about its risks to environmental diversity and the heritage of Native Americans.
