Enraptured, the author of \u201cOjal\u00e1\u201d had before him the annals of his personal history, a rearview mirror that made his gaze wander along a genetic record rooted in 18 generations and some 500 years, which would have made Borges, for example, so devoted to metafiction, burst with happiness, knowing he had been delved into the very core of lineage and time.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/El-director-de-la-serie-Alejandro-Gil.-Detras-algunos-de-los-protagonistas-de-la-serie-Nelson-Aboy-Zuleica-Romay-Osvaldo-Doimeadios-y-Silvio-Rodriguez.-Foto.-AMD.jpg\" alt=\"The series\u2019 director, Alejandro Gil. Photo: AMD.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Filming was complicated: Gil and <\/b><b><i>Ruta ADN Cuba<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The singer-songwriter\u2019s genealogy is captured in one of the six chapters of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruta ADN Cuba<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first season of a series directed by filmmaker Alejandro Gil, inherited from his colleague and friend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/author\/ernestodaranas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ernesto Daranas<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Gil documents the creation of the genetic map of Cuban personalities and interweaves it with their life experiences in an exercise in memory, identity and emotional introspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gil, who achieved fame in 2018 with the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inocencia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brought <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/osvaldo-doimeadios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Osvaldo Doimeadi\u00f3s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (actor), Silvio Rodr\u00edguez (singer-songwriter), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/deportes\/el-gran-salto-de-mireya-luis-voleibol-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Mireya Luis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (former volleyball player), Zuleica Romay (researcher), Roberto Diago (visual artist) and Nelson Aboy (anthropologist) in front of the lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was hard work, incredibly hard. You can\u2019t imagine how difficult it was,\u201d Gil confessed while addressing the Chaplin Theater auditorium, where the screening of the hour-long audiovisual took place last Thursday, August 28. The documentary is a co-production between the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the National Center for Medical Genetics and the Ministry of Culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also the director of films such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La pared\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2006), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La emboscada\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AM-PM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023), Gil is currently immersed in the making of his feature film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/teofilo-stevenson-pelicula-alejandro-gil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Te\u00f3filo<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fictionalized account of the legendary boxer Te\u00f3filo Stevenson (1952-2012), the Moscow scenes of which were recently filmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe tried to never cut away from the doctor, so that her scientific explanations could be understood, and that\u2019s why we used long shots,\u201d explained the filmmaker, who, to avoid interrupting the specialist\u2019s speech, devised a signaling system with his team so that the camera movement, lighting control and sound architecture of the scenes would unfold in a bubble of technical silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are life stories that create an extraordinary empathy with the audience, and cinema gives them tremendous luminosity,\u201d he concluded, thanking the series\u2019 protagonists for their collaboration, whom he described as \u201cwonderful beings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Dra.-Beartriz-Marcheco-Teruel-Fotograma-del-documental.-ENDAC.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Beartriz Marcheco Teruel. ENDAC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The clinical eye: Dr. Marcheco<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLet\u2019s talk with Silvio, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L33G-LHmFC8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the kid from the Ariguanabo River<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where generations ago his ancestors arrived and took root,\u201d invites Dr. Beatriz Marcheco Teruel, the documentary\u2019s host, standing in front of an almost idyllic landscape if it weren\u2019t for the waterway\u2019s pollution, which Silvio evokes in some of his songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 53, the researcher is a high-profile professional in constant academic growth. She directs the National Center for Medical Genetics in Havana, a PAHO\/WHO Collaborating Center for the Development of Genetic Approaches in Health Promotion; she is also a practicing physician and specialist in clinical genetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discipline deals with the study of hereditary diseases within a family and those that, while not hereditary, are caused by alterations in the sequence of DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid, a macromolecule that contains the genetic information essential for the development, functioning and reproduction of all living beings and some viruses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcheco has also conducted important genetic research on the island, such as that which traced the hereditary causes of disabilities and the creation of the National Twin Registry, completed in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An unexpected and painful event sparked her passion for human genetics. Near the end of her medical studies, she learned that her mother suffered from Usher Syndrome, a rare genetic disease that causes progressive vision and hearing loss. \u201cThis became a challenge for me&#8230;to prevent, cure or at least help these people navigate life with the least possible trauma,\u201d she told the press at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 2018 and 2021, the scientist joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/cuba-indigena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Cuba Ind\u00edgena<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team, a project initiated and directed by Spanish photographer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/sociedad-cuba\/poblacion\/rostros-de-cuba-indigena-la-huella-que-no-perdimos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>H\u00e9ctor Garrido<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the support of Dr. Alejandro Hartmann, historian of the city of Baracoa; Julio Larramendi, photographer and visual artist; and sociologist Enrique G\u00f3mez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcheco Teruel was in charge of conducting genetic testing on 27 families with Amerindian ancestry in the eastern region of Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Distant memories: \u201cI am from where there is a river\u201d and Grandpa F\u00e9lix<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderated by Dr. Marcheco, the audiovisual captures the exchange of memories between Silvio and Giraldo Alay\u00f3n, a native of San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os and the artist\u2019s oldest friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNothing, we\u2019ve known each other for 74 years. Help!\u201d laughed Alay\u00f3n, a biologist by profession and a defender, along with the composer, of the Ariguanabo River ecosystem since the 1980s. Finally, in September 2018, after a decade of efforts and paperwork, the Ariguanabo Foundation was legally established for the conservation of the waterway and its surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no doubt that during both of their childhoods the river was \u2014 and still remains \u2014 the region\u2019s main attraction. Both recalled their first clandestine swimming trips \u2014 thanks to one of his uncles, Silvio already knew how and taught his friend \u2014 they also fished and played ball in a small field at the back of the singer-songwriter\u2019s birthplace, at 2.5 Caridad Street, where Alay\u00f3n \u201chopes that one day\u201d a plaque will be placed commemorating the birth of the famous Cuban musician.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/El-biologo-Giraldo-Alayon-natural-de-San-Antonio-de-los-Banos-y-el-mas-longevo-amigo-del-artista.-Foto.-AMD.jpg\" alt=\"Biologist Giraldo Alay\u00f3n, a native of San Antonio de los Ba\u00f1os and the artist\u2019s oldest friend. One of them, Silvio\u2019s terrified flight from the appearance of a hairy spider \u2014 \u201cit was the size of a chicken\u201d \u2014 as it crawled through a narrow passage in one of the local caves; or the imposing presence of the artist\u2019s maternal grandfather, F\u00e9lix Mar\u00eda Dom\u00ednguez, whom Alay\u00f3n remembers as \u201ca patriarch,\u201d with a graying mustache and a resemblance to General Calixto Garc\u00eda, dressed in white, silently dominating the home scene from his quiet rocking chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy grandfather was a cigar roller&#8230;he chewed tobacco. And he made his own chews,\u201d Silvio recalls in the documentary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The musician\u2019s family was one of many that worked in the tobacco industry. His maternal grandmother, Mar\u00eda Le\u00f3n, his mother, Argelia, and his aunts worked as stemmers (they removed the central vein from the tobacco leaves), and the men worked as cigar rollers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silvio recounts the encounter F\u00e9lix had as a child in a Tampa grocery store with Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, on one of the trips the revolutionary leader made from New York in the early 1890s to meet with the cigar makers, one of the pillars of the independence and republican project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the song \u201cYo soy de donde hay un r\u00edo\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00e9cimas a mi abuelo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the poet wants to \u201clie down\u201d in \u201chis own grave, without prayer and without a slab,\u201d with the certainty of the cigar-making patriarch\u2019s belongings, \u201chis chair, his knife, his chew, and his Nevada crown, which I also know is his knee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The <\/b><b><i>Olivette<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investigations carried out by Dr. Marcheco\u2019s team uncovered another interesting fact about F\u00e9lix Mar\u00eda\u2019s life: that in 1908, at the age of 21, he was a passenger, along with his father, Francisco Dom\u00ednguez, on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/sociedad-cuba\/historia\/el-vapor-olivette-sumergido-en-el-olvido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the steamship <\/b><b><i>Olivette<\/i><\/b><b>, bound for the United States<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched on July 15, 1887, the ship was used by Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed on his frequent trips to Key West. On the first of these voyages, the ship was decorated with Cuban flags and an onboard band played the Bayamo anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there\u2019s more. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivette<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the ship that carried, as part of the correspondence between the United States and Cuba, the order for the uprising of February 24, 1895, sent by Mart\u00ed to Juan Gualberto G\u00f3mez, one of his trusted men and Delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1918, the ship ran aground 8 miles east of Havana harbor due to heavy seas and fog. All attempts to refloat it were unsuccessful, and it finally sank a hundred meters north of Punta El Jud\u00edo, on the western shore of Bacuranao beach, opposite the current Granma Naval Academy in East Havana, where it still lies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Marcheco invited Silvio and his family to visit the wreck, which rests on the seabed at a depth of about 15 meters. \u201cWell, we survived,\u201d the singer-songwriter laughed, back on land and still wrapped in a wetsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trailer de Ruta ADN Cuba\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7VGyR1iFOoI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><b>A fountain pen with red antiseptic solution<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gil\u2019s audiovisual material captured other moving scenes. During a visit to Ojal\u00e1 Studios, the geneticist became interested in a binder and a fountain pen resting on a piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/vicente-feliu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Vicente Feli\u00fa<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [1947-2021] gave me that pen when I was leaving on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playa Gir\u00f3n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and I used that pen to write everything I wrote,\u201d Silvio recalled, alluding to his adventure on the fishing boat where he enlisted in 1969.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experience lasted until January 1970, during which he composed 62 songs in one go, some of which later became classics such as \u201cOjal\u00e1,\u201d \u201cResumen de noticias,\u201d \u201cCuando digo futuro\u201d and \u201cPlaya Gir\u00f3n.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He met Vicente, who would soon become another founder of the New Song Movement, when they were both in high school. \u201cI was in night school and he was in day school, in Havana.\u201d Their lives diverged for three years. Silvio joined the army as a recruit, and Vicente went to the countryside to harvest coffee. When they reunited, both composed songs accompanied by the guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy the way, it wasn\u2019t ink in the pen, because there was no ink; it was a red antiseptic solution ,\u201d recalls the singer-songwriter, whose fountain pen traveled with both of them to Angola in 1976, just a few months after Cuba stationed an expeditionary force there to stop the South African invasion at the gates of Luanda, an episode described by the superb Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez in the report \u201cOperaci\u00f3n Carlota,\u201d published in 1977 in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricontinental<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe both worked with that pen,\u201d recalled Silvio, who is also a draftsman and mentioned to the doctor about the giraffe she had observed, which he painted for his daughter Violeta, then a child, while he was in Angola.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Cartel-de-la-serie-Ruta-ADN-Cuba.-Foto.-ENDAC.jpg\" alt=\"Poster for the series \u201cRuta ADN Cuba.\u201d Photo: ENDAC\" width=\"735\" height=\"1080\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poster for the series \u201cRuta ADN Cuba.\u201d Photo: ENDAC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Music, poetry and decency<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silvio says that decency was an important value in many families at the time. \u201cThere was talk of being decent, of having proper social behavior and of being considerate of others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Dagoberto, his father, he inherited \u201ca love of reading,\u201d despite the fact that he had a rudimentary education, \u201csince he had worked in the fields since he was a child,\u201d although \u201che always had a great interest in books and literature. He was very fond of theater and poetry, and through him I learned the poetry of Mart\u00ed and Guill\u00e9n; a man with barely completed second grade, who enjoyed reading profound poetry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his mother\u2019s side, the main legacy was music. \u201cEveryone in my mother\u2019s family was a musician, starting with my grandmother Mar\u00eda, who sang old songs at home like \u2018El colibr\u00ed,\u2019 a tune I sang a lot and that I learned from her and later from my mother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Argelia Dom\u00ednguez formed a duo with her sister Orqu\u00eddea when they were teenagers and participated in cultural activities in the town. However, the social prejudices of the time made it difficult for them to continue their artistic careers, something that did not happen with the men in the family, who founded musical groups like Jazz Mambo Beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Silvio-Rodriguez.-Fotograma-del-documental.-Foto.-ENDAC.jpg\" alt=\"Silvio Rodr\u00edguez. Photo: ENDAC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Bitter chocolate, Eusebio Leaand a cosmopolitan Mart\u00ed follower<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The genealogical report obtained from a saliva sample establishes that Silvio Rodr\u00edguez possesses 291 sections of DNA inherited from Neanderthals, some related to physical and physiological characteristics such as blushing easily or the ability to sweat during exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This inheritance dates back to our distant ancestors and demonstrates how fragments of that ancient genetic line are still present and affect current traits. Among these peculiarities, in his case, his fondness for bitter chocolate stands out, a trait that links him \u2014 metaphorically \u2014 to those humans who lived some 400,000 years ago until their extinction around 40,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, Silvio has a genetic predisposition for having an ear for music, an ability that allows him to hear and reproduce melodies with great fidelity. This ability stems from a deep connection with his family heritage, especially with his mother and grandmother, who had a notable musicality that influenced his artistic development from childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A curious and significant fact is that the musician shares a common ancestor with the historian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/eusebio-leal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Eusebio Leal<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(1942-2020), with whom he would be a fifth cousin, sharing a grandfather approximately 180 years back, in the sixth generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m not surprised. And I\u2019m sure it wouldn\u2019t have surprised him either.
