
{"id":328444,"date":"2025-09-16T10:00:42","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T14:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=328444"},"modified":"2025-09-15T08:10:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T12:10:51","slug":"la-punta-more-than-a-fortress-in-havana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/la-punta-more-than-a-fortress-in-havana\/","title":{"rendered":"La Punta, more than a fortress in Havana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When you mention La Punta, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Havana<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, you immediately \u2014 and quite logically \u2014 think of the San Salvador de La Punta Fortress, one of Havana\u2019s first fortifications, located at the entrance to the bay, directly opposite the Tres Reyes del Morro Castle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The La Punta fortress, as it is popularly known, was built \u2014 along with El Morro and La Fuerza \u2014 to reinforce the city\u2019s then-precarious defenses in the second half of the 16th century, following the devastating attack by the French pirate Jacques de Sores. Its layout was the work of the famous engineer Bautista Antonelli; its construction took several years and faced no small number of difficulties.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/En-Faro-del-Morro_otm_1.jpg\" alt=\"Cannons at the entrance to Havana Bay, in the La Punta area. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One might think that the area known today as La Punta owes its name to the fortress, surrounded by a shallow moat dug into the rock of the Havana coastline. However, the fortification \u2014 turned into a museum after the historic center and its defensive system were declared a World Heritage Site \u2014 actually took the name already given to the site.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the 16th century, before the first stones of the fortress were laid, the area was already known as La Punta, precisely because it was located at one of the points of the bay. Due to its strategic position, the authorities began to place lookouts and trenches there, and there was even a small fort before the current fortress, which ended up consolidating the name of the site.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Reparacion_otma_1.jpg\" alt=\"Repair work on the San Salvador de La Punta Fortress, at the entrance to Havana Bay. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Due to its past, its everyday life and its surrounding areas, the esplanade of La Punta is certainly more than just the emblematic fortress, currently under repair. It is a popular spot for strollers and fishers, tourists and lovers, whose history is also marked by the execution in 1871 of the eight medical students, commemorated with a symbolic and necessary monument.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">The area is also a place of remembrance, with a bust of Ferm\u00edn Vald\u00e9s Dom\u00ednguez, a classmate of those executed, who was himself convicted in those fateful events and who dedicated much of his life to proving the innocence of the young students and promoted the construction of the monument in their honor.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Estudiantes-de-medicina_Otma_1.jpg\" alt=\"Restoration work on the area surrounding the monument to the eight medical students executed in 1871, in the La Punta area. In addition to the monuments already mentioned, the area also commemorates figures such as the Venezuelan patriot Francisco de Miranda, the Canadian soldier and explorer Pierre le Moyne d\u2019lberville, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/canaldigital\/galerias\/el-monumento-a-maximo-gomez-de-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Generalissimo M\u00e1ximo G\u00f3mez<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The moving verses of \u201cMi Bandera\u201d by Matanzas poet Bonifacio Byrne are also displayed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Important Havana arteries converge near La Punta, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/canaldigital\/galerias\/enfoco\/paseo-prado-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paseo del Prado<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, San L\u00e1zaro Street and Malec\u00f3n Avenue.
