Newspaper headlines and newscasts often presented Mujica as\u00a0\u201cthe poorest president in the world,\u201d\u00a0although he rejected that label. He said he was a\u00a0\u201csober\u201d\u00a0president, who needed little to live.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI live the way I lived long before I was president,\u201d\u00a0he explained in a 2014 interview.\u00a0\u201cI still live in the same neighborhood,\u00a0in\u00a0the same way. I am a republican president. Silvio arrived there, barely able to remove the dust from his journey, accompanied by his wife, flutist Niurka Gonz\u00e1lez, and his daughter, pianist Malva Rodr\u00edguez.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Luc\u00eda awaited them with her usual poise: sadness and laughter without compromise, the lucidity of someone who has loved and fought, the serenity of someone who knows that life goes on. She welcomed them into her small kitchen-dining room\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the diminutive, in this case, is not a flirtatious term, but an exact description.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1848px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/encuentro-Silvio-Rodriguez-con-Lucia-Kaloian-12.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1848\" height=\"1230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the table, among books, bread, mate and notes, there was memory. A lot of\u00a0memory. At that table, Luc\u00eda and Pepe spent long hours discussing politics, reading poems, listening to\u00a0music\u00a0or laughing. They also\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as she herself says\u00a0\u2014\u00a0had harsh disagreements. Like life itself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was a close and warm conversation between Luc\u00eda and her Cuban guests, a long after-dinner conversation, with Pepe still wandering around the house in the form of an anecdote, an idea, a refrain.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Silvio, Niurka, Malva and the three or four other people present listened to her without blinking. They spoke of Pepe\u2019s legacy, of the need for new generations to\u00a0\u201ctake up the flag\u201d\u00a0of the Latin American integration he dreamed of beyond governments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Luc\u00eda recounted that until his last day, Pepe fulfilled his rituals.\u00a0\u201cUntil the last day he could, he would ride the tractor,\u201d\u00a0she recalled.\u00a0\u201cEven if it was only for half an hour, he would go out and come back happy.\u201d\u00a0When he could no\u00a0longer, he rode\u00a0an electric tricycle; later, in a wheelchair. He would say:\u00a0\u2018If I leave, you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0lose your\u00a0jobs. We\u00a0have to\u00a0create jobs for you.\u2019\u00a0Always sow, you\u00a0understand?\u00a0Sow.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And during those difficult days, a song from Silvio arrived for Pepe and Luc\u00eda.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOh, did\u00a0he\u00a0get to listen to it?\u201d\u00a0Silvio asked, astonished.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Luc\u00eda nodded with a gentle smile.\u00a0\u201cYes, he did. And he saw the video you sent.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/encuentro-Silvio-Rodriguez-con-Lucia-Kaloian-1-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1647\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was the Argentine singer-songwriter Le\u00f3n\u00a0Gieco\u00a0who suggested that artists from around the world send messages to Pepe when it became known that his health was deteriorating. The farm was then flooded with music and affection, with voices and messages from the most remote corners\u00a0\u2014\u00a0even Mongolia, Luc\u00eda says with a laugh. Among them was Silvio\u2019s song:\u00a0\u201cM\u00e1s\u00a0porvenir\u201d\u00a0(More Future).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before singing it in the video, the\u00a0singer-songwriter\u00a0said:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDear Pepe, this is my greeting from Cuba to you and Luc\u00eda. I began these verses in 2009, when I heard you say some things, and I finished them a few days ago, motivated by the call of our beloved Le\u00f3n\u00a0Gieco. A big hug.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ma\u0301s porvenir - Silvio Rodr\u00edguez\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kfzzxDFSeFI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From those conversations with Pepe and Luc\u00eda\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and from so many others he heard\u00a0\u2014\u00a0emerged\u00a0the song that Silvio performs today at every concert on his Latin American tour.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At one point, the conversation naturally turned\u00a0to\u00a0culture as a powerful tool for transformation. Luc\u00eda spoke of the\u00a0\u201cmurgas\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u201cthe sung resistance, year after year\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0of Galeano, Benedetti,\u00a0Zitarrosa\u00a0and Daniel\u00a0Viglietti.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She recalled when her grandmother took her as a child to the Sol\u00eds Theater, back in the 1940s, to see\u00a0a very young\u00a0Alicia Alonso dance\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Swan Lake<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with the New York Ballet Theatre:\u00a0\u201cShe told us:\u00a0\u2018Look closely, she\u2019s the best in the world.\u2019\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0never forgotten it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1848px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/encuentro-Silvio-Rodriguez-con-Lucia-Kaloian-2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1848\" height=\"1230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 1848px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/encuentro-Silvio-Rodriguez-con-Lucia-Kaloian-8.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1848\" height=\"1230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also evoked a nurse from Pinar del R\u00edo who cared for her other grandmother and spoke to them about Cuba and Mart\u00ed during the long nights on call. And she declared herself an admirer of Alejo Carpentier:\u00a0\u201cHe brings out the Spanish language like few others.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0singer-songwriter\u00a0reciprocated with gifts: a book and his latest albums.\u00a0\u201cIf you don\u2019t listen to that music, give it to whoever you want.\u201d\u00a0Luc\u00eda laughed:\u00a0\u201cOf course not!\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0always listened to you.\u00a0First\u00a0I listened to Carlos Puebla; then, to you, the\u00a0New Song Movement.\u00a0You\u2019ve\u00a0always made it here.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was also a shared geography. It\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be that during the pandemic we\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0produced vaccines together. That\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0happen again.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pepe always said it:\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0stop campaigning,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0back down, talk to the people.\u00a0\u201cNo one can replace one-on-one,\u201d\u00a0he repeated.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why, together with Luc\u00eda, they conceived the neighborhood\u00a0mate\u00a0days: unfiltered gatherings to listen and discuss. From there\u00a0\u2014\u00a0they both believed\u00a0\u2014\u00a0true leadership is born, the kind that ensures projects\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0get cut short.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was an unparalleled privilege to have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0that meeting and listened, for over an hour, to a woman like Luc\u00eda: lucid, affectionate, indispensable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1848px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/encuentro-Silvio-Rodriguez-con-Lucia-Kaloian-6.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1848\" height=\"1230\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Almost a\u00a0decade ago, I saw them together in Havana. It was in 2016, on Santa Rosa Street, in the El Pilar neighborhood, during the 71st concert of the\u00a0\u201cPor\u00a0los\u00a0Barrios\u201d\u00a0tour. Pepe and Luc\u00eda arrived, and the neighborhood erupted in applause. Pepe extended his hand to shake, and a bouquet of hands\u00a0\u2014\u00a0black, weathered, with worn nail polish, golden nails, hands of all colors\u00a0\u2014\u00a0clasped his as if they never wanted to let go.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next day, on his blog, Silvio wrote that Mujica had said that the concert had been a\u00a0\u201cperfect closing\u201d\u00a0to his visit to Cuba. Luc\u00eda accompanied the visitors\u00a0almost to\u00a0the gate. In 2020, he said it with his usual serenity:\u00a0\u201cMy future destiny is under that sequoia, where Manuela is buried.
