{"id":330467,"date":"2025-10-30T16:24:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T20:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=330467"},"modified":"2025-11-01T15:24:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T19:24:02","slug":"sanctuary-of-our-lady-of-charity-of-el-cobre-needs-help-after-damage-from-melissa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/sanctuary-of-our-lady-of-charity-of-el-cobre-needs-help-after-damage-from-melissa\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre needs help after damage from Melissa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The National\u00a0Sanctuary\u00a0of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, one of the most venerated religious sites for Cuban Catholics, needs help after being severely damaged this Wednesday by powerful\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/huracan-melissa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hurricane\u00a0Melissa<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was explained in statements to EFE by the rector and parish priest of the Sanctuary, Rogelio Dean Puerta, who indicated that the temple of\u00a0Cuba\u2019s\u00a0Patron Saint suffered \u201cpartial damage\u201d due to the intense onslaught of Hurricane Melissa, which, as a Category 3 (out of 5) on the Saffir-Simpson scale, battered the eastern part of the island with torrential rains and strong winds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt damaged half of the basilica&#8217;s stained-glass windows, the woodwork, and ripped off doors and windows\u2026,\u201d recounted the parish priest, who nevertheless expressed confidence in its recovery.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the damage, Dean assured that the church plans to resume its religious activities within two days.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity, declared a National Monument in 2012, is\u00a0located\u00a0on a hill in the small town of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every day, more than 500 people visit the church, where\u00a0mass is celebrated every morning, and people also come from\u00a0different parts\u00a0of the island to fulfill promises and leave offerings to the Virgin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Extensive\u00a0damage<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although Hurricane Melissa has continued to move away from Cuba in recent hours, its eastern provinces remained under a hurricane warning until Wednesday night.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In those territories, official media have reported flooding, severe damage to homes and other infrastructure, overflowing rivers, landslides, isolated\u00a0communities\u00a0and damage to telecommunications, among other devastation that has yet to be quantified.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt has been a night of great pain and tension. Hurricane Melissa struck the town of El Cobre with incredible force. The elders say they have never seen anything like it before,\u201d the rector of the National\u00a0Sanctuary\u00a0of Our Lady of Charity said earlier in an audio message released on social media.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?ref=embed_video&#038;v=1541643840193347<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The parish priest recounted that the view from the Sanctuary showed the town where it is\u00a0located\u00a0to be \u201cdevastated,\u201d because \u201cpractically only the houses with masonry roofs remained undamaged.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, he appealed to \u201cfriends from sister churches, organizations, groups, confraternities, dioceses, congregations and NGOs to turn their attention to eastern Cuba during this very difficult time.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He also urged \u201clocal groups of brothers and sisters who can contribute their efforts and help in the restoration of houses and the Sanctuary.\u201d<\/span><span
