After seven years of work,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/carenas_oficial?igsh=MW1kdDc1M3htYnBkMQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carenas<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fis, without a doubt, Cuban haute couture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Its\u00a0pieces impress with their design, good taste,\u00a0sensitivity\u00a0and concept. One might imagine that behind them lies an industry with a robust infrastructure. But no.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carenas\u00a0operates out of a small workshop with Singer sewing machines from the 1920s, with fewer than five employees, but plenty of passion, dedication and a well-defined vision shaped by the hands and minds of Raisa Cortina and Manuel Olivera, even though neither of them has formal training in design or any related\u00a0aspect of fashion.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From that small workshop and their artistry have\u00a0emerged\u00a0a dozen collections since the brand was launched in 2018. Having already made a name for themselves in Cuba\u2019s burgeoning fashion scene, they have graced runways in France,\u00a0Geneva\u00a0and Italy, and in 2024 they won the International Award for Best Collection at the Venice International Fashion Show.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Carenas: cuero, color, pasi\u00f3n\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0245AKKW9HA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe idea for\u00a0Carenas\u00a0arose from the need to find a product, a style of fashion, that spoke a language closer to our times. We started selling at the craft fair of the Cuban Association of Artisans and Artists (ACAA)\u00a0on Obispo\u00a0Street, and there we first\u00a0encountered\u00a0a material as rich as leather,\u201d\u00a0Manuel Olivares tells us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCarenas\u00a0started with just the two of us making the pieces. We worked all night long, we\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0even have a workshop, we only had one sewing machine, and it would take us an entire night to make a wallet,\u201d\u00a0Raisa recalls.\u00a0\u201cWe started learning a bit, immersing ourselves in the world of\u00a0fashion,\u00a0and also\u00a0in the techniques for working with it, and we kept perfecting all of that.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0done everything at\u00a0Carenas, from community managers to directors,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0covered absolutely every aspect, but now\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0managed to build a team that really complements each other well, and\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been transforming everything, professionalizing the brand.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Everything changed<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carenas\u2019\u00a0first collections, presented in 2019, played with shapes and geometries. It was clear that there was a specific language with leather, and\u00a0above all, a\u00a0desire to attract attention and show that leather could break free from the\u00a0\u201ctraditional\u201d\u00a0role that had been assumed in the Cuban market for this type of product.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then doors began to open, and with them, challenges. This is how the techniques and concepts arrived that transformed the brand\u2019s entire aesthetic and have paved the way to where it is today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn 2019, Havana celebrated its 500th anniversary, and we were going to inaugurate an exhibition at\u00a0Estudio\u00a050 as part of the Art and Fashion event. We were to share the design space with a professor from Parsons\u00a0The\u00a0New School for Design in New York, who also has a handbag brand. We had to create something representative of each artist\u2019s work that incorporated a part of Havana,\u201d\u00a0Raisa recounts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen they made us the proposal, we decided to create something unique. We wanted it to be a conceptual look at Havana. Not so descriptive, not so basic,\u201d\u00a0Manuel explains.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is how the idea of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exploring Havana\u2019s architecture was born. Seeking a path beyond the usual postcards, they came across the\u00a0Inglaterra\u00a0Hotel\u00a0and its\u00a0Mudejar-style mosaics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Carenas-Grand-Inglaterra.jpg\" alt=\"Carenas\u00a0handbag from the Grand\u00a0Inglaterra\u00a0collection. We also like that people\u00a0have to\u00a0decipher it,\u201d\u00a0explains Manuel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe also tested it on a machine to see if we could print on leather, and it worked,\u201d\u00a0says Raisa. They arrived at printing, a technique used in many parts of the world, but until then, no one had dared to try it or had succeeded on the island.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For that collective exhibition called Global\u00a0Visual\u00a0they presented five handbags. The public\u2019s positive reception encouraged them to expand the project into a full collection called Grand\u00a0Inglaterra, but by the time it was ready, it was 2020, and the world stopped.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe launched a collection of 12 bags, and\u00a0it was\u00a0right\u00a0then\u00a0that\u00a0the pandemic hit. We were supposed to have a fashion show the\u00a0weekend\u00a0everything shut down, and in July we decided to release it online. A whole photoshoot had already been done, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0how it started to\u00a0be\u00a0known,\u201d\u00a0says Raisa.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The label<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grand\u00a0Inglaterra\u00a0gave\u00a0Carenas\u00a0much of its artistic essence.\u00a0The mosaics and stained-glass windows of various parts of the city have served as inspiration for blending architecture and fashion to this day.\u00a0But vision and clear guidelines have been the key to the brand\u2019s current positioning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Manuel tells us about these aspects, which, obviously,\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0been a straightforward path either.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt the beginning, it was more of an artisanal brand, and now we\u2019re more closely linked to fashion, but the mission has always been the same: to offer, not only to our generation but to the general public, a Cuban-designed, handmade product, and to revive the richness of a material as timeless as leather.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Carenas-3.jpg\" alt=\"The handcrafted and personalized work on each piece is one of the brand\u2019s essential hallmarks. Photo: Lied Lorain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the brand\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0abandon the artisanal concept when designing its products.\u00a0\u201cCarenas\u00a0is a brand that produces on a small scale, meaning it doesn\u2019t produce wholesale, and that\u2019s one of the things we maintain as a hallmark of quality that can\u2019t be lost,\u201d\u00a0explains Raisa.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEach piece passes through our hands, represents hours of work, tells a story and carries a bit of our spirit,\u201d\u00a0reaffirms Manuel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All the materials used at\u00a0Carenas\u00a0are one hundred percent Cuban. The leather comes from other artisan hands, those of the tanners, who in turn work with the surplus hides from meat processing intended for food. Symbiosis and sustainability are clearly other important values\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the brand.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Its leaders also speak to us of\u00a0\u201cthe perspective and vision of our times,\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0where the structural designs of each piece come into play as a hook to connect with fashion and the tastes of today\u2019s public.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIn a world that moves so fast, where every day we consume more and more, we\u2019re committed to the inherent value of leather in terms of richness and durability,\u201d\u00a0says Manuel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0not just a bag;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0everything behind that bag: people who are working, striving, studying. It carries a weight that takes time to uncover and for people to begin accepting that something of high quality can exist here, something\u00a0made without having to go looking for it\u00a0abroad,\u201d\u00a0Raisa\u00a0observes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To date, the brand only sells online, by order. They\u00a0maintain\u00a0a catalog of over 70 designs from all their\u00a0collections\u00a0and each piece is made to order within a maximum of 15 days and delivered personally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Island<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In June of this year,\u00a0Carenas\u00a0participated again in the Venice International Fashion Concert in Italy. After the success and award received for their presence at the event in 2024, they felt the need to explore more diverse concepts and aesthetics.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Carenas-Island.jpg\" alt=\"Presentation of the Island collection in Venice. Photo: Courtesy of Carenas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Furthermore, their three years of experience at international events have provided them with the tools to understand the concept of creating and presenting a collection in\u00a0other\u00a0disemsions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen you\u00a0participate\u00a0in an international fashion show, you\u00a0have to\u00a0go a little further and not just bring an accessory. We have tried to create outfits each year with each collection, not focused on being utilitarian \u2014 although they are, because they meet the requirements \u2014 but on offering a glimpse into the highest artistic expression of the collection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0about bringing to life on the runway all the research we do into art history, architecture, why we choose each mosaic, why each area. We want people who attend the shows to leave feeling something. We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want them to just see a pretty bag or a piece, but also to see and feel the narrative it tells,\u201d\u00a0Manuel explains.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is how Island,\u00a0the\u00a0latest collection, was born, a collection that speaks not only of Cuba, but of the geographical region we inhabit. Floral elements were added as a new aesthetic and artisanal feature.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carenas\u00a0proudly boasts of having created three thousand flowers entirely by hand to construct the true works of art that graced the runway at the presentation of this collection in Venice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 815px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Carenas-flores.jpg\" alt=\"The entirely handmade flowers were\u00a0Island\u2019s\u00a0great challenge. With the flowers, we wanted to revive that very manual\u00a0tradition, but\u00a0also\u00a0based on\u00a0a very artistic perspective. The pieces were conceived\u00a0almost as\u00a0sculptures because the mesh was made, then molded on top of the mannequins to create the shape of the body with all the flowers, and we chose flowers native to the Caribbean.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe had always talked in all our collections about this\u00a0cross-cultural\u00a0process;\u00a0about how\u00a0different cultures\u00a0nourished each other. We drew from the Old World, the Old World\u00a0of\u00a0our colors and,\u00a0in this collection,\u00a0it was like saying purely,\u00a0\u2018We are the Caribbean, we have this\u00a0richness\u00a0and we are going to highlight it.\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0about highlighting what our own essence means,\u201d\u00a0Raisa explains.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The designers\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0choose\u00a0a favorite\u00a0collection. They feel each one as a new step that has shaped or redirected their path, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the only way to grow.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Changes in techniques,\u00a0inspirations\u00a0and languages; a wider range of pieces to create; experimentation with\u00a0different materials\u00a0while still giving leather center stage\u00a0\u2014\u00a0in short, evolution, which is only possible with\u00a0a clear vision\u00a0and\u00a0objectives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe key will always be pursuing your dreams above all else, in any context,\u201d\u00a0Manuel summarizes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAn entrepreneur never rests. You always\u00a0have to\u00a0have\u00a0new ideas, you always\u00a0have to\u00a0reinvent yourself in every way: with your surroundings, with your own essence, with your own work.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the most important thing. And never stop dreaming so that when you reach your goals, you feel the need to go even further.
