With his bat that seemed to measure two meters and possessed an almost prehistoric power capable of shredding the seams of the ball, George Herman Ruth arrived in Havana on Friday, October 29, 1920, aboard the steamship\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Governor Cobb<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, via Key West, with the purpose of displaying his home run crown to Cuban fans.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The economic situation resulting from the banking collapse of 1920 prevented Abel Linares\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a baseball promoter and owner of the Almendares team\u00a0\u2014\u00a0from taking the risky gamble of importing Major League clubs to organize his customary fall season.\u00a0So\u00a0he concentrated his efforts on an exhibition game between the New York Giants, a powerful team managed by John McGraw that had finished second in the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0League, and the two main local teams: Habana and Almendares.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One afternoon, Linares was enjoying a game between the Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics at the Polo Grounds when a stranger in a suit approached him and handed him a card with the name John Igoe, Babe Ruth\u2019s representative, along with an offer to bring the home run record holder onto the Giants\u2019\u00a0road trip. Linares, a shrewd\u00a0businessman,\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0hesitate. He invited the agent to his hotel room and presented him with a box of guava jelly and Cuban cigars.\u00a0\u201cDon\u2019t you think a country that produces such delicious things is worth visiting?\u201d\u00a0Igoe exclaimed, delighted. Over whiskeys and cigar smoke, they agreed to pay Ruth $2,000 in cash for each of the ten scheduled games. Furthermore, the\u00a0host would cover travel expenses and accommodations at the Plaza Hotel for the 25-year-old player, his\u00a0wife\u00a0and\u00a0the secretary\u00a0himself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baseball had already become a religion on the island, and being in the presence of the\u00a0sport\u2019s\u00a0icon was, without a doubt, an unmissable spectacle.\u00a0\u201cAll the press, both local and\u00a0U.S., has written numerous times about this magnificent slugger who has set a record difficult to beat; today the public has its first opportunity to see the marvelous\u00a0\u2018Babe\u2019\u00a0in action, and now is the time to convince ourselves of what the cable news has told us and what those who have seen him say,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diario de la Marina<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0prepared the ground. Almendares Park was packed with spectators eager to\u00a0witness\u00a0the mythical home runs. On the very day of his arrival, in the evening, he went to the Jai Alai fronton at Concordia and Lucena. There he lost $800 betting. Before leaving the old mansion where\u00a0jai alai\u00a0was played, he confessed:\u00a0\u201cIf you only knew, I\u2019m thinking I like this game more than baseball.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Saturday the 30th, he debuted in his tiger stripes at Almendares Park against the Havana Lions, who, curiously, were distinguished by their red uniforms. By the time he joined the roster, McGraw\u2019s Giants had already played eight games\u00a0\u2014\u00a0since the 16th\u00a0\u2014\u00a0against the home teams (with a record of three wins, three losses and two ties). From then on, all eyes in the stands, packed to the last seat, were on the brand-new\u00a0\u201creinforcement,\u201d\u00a0the one the\u00a0\u201cmovies\u201d\u00a0that\u00a0had launched\u00a0him to\u00a0fame were clamoring for. That day, Babe batted fourth and played center field; although he hit a couple of extra-base hits, with two RBIs and one run scored, he\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0quite\u00a0please\u00a0his fans.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next day, against the Almendares Blues,\u00a0he\u00a0seemed to break\u00a0the ice by hitting a\u00a0ball\u00a0that looked like it would clear the fence, but it lacked height and ended up as a triple. Photo: Taken from www.lelands.com.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Three days later, again against Habana, the phenomenal cleanup hitter turned out to be\u00a0\u201ca big disappointment\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0wrote\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diario de la Marina<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and even drew some boos. Crist\u00f3bal Torriente, from Cienfuegos, hit a double and three home runs, the last\u00a0one off\u00a0Ruth himself on the mound, driving in six of Almendares\u2019\u00a0eleven runs in their victory over the visitors. The ovation was monumental: from the stands, they threw coins,\u00a0bills\u00a0and cigars at him; they\u00a0gifted\u00a0him\u00a0with\u00a0a gold watch and Gener cigars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although he was a dazzling talent, Torriente was never able to play in the Major Leagues due to racial barriers. The Bambino himself initially described him as\u00a0\u201ca ton and a half of coal in a dark basement,\u201d\u00a0and he also disliked it when the press began calling him\u00a0\u201cthe Black Babe Ruth.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over time, however,\u00a0a friendship\u00a0developed. Ruth would eventually admit:\u00a0\u201cIf I could take home slugger Torriente and pitcher Jos\u00e9 M\u00e9ndez to my team, we\u2019d win the pennant by the beginning of September and then go fishing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In short, during the Havana Tri-Ball, Ruth batted .345. Ruth received his full fee, and the tour was a resounding success: earnings were around $40,000, according to reporters. This windfall encouraged Juan\u00a0Lageyre, a baseball promoter in Santiago de Cuba, who offered the Bambino $3,000 for two exhibition games in the city.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ruth arrived in Santiago at dawn on November 20, on a delayed train. A crowd waited for him all night at the station. During batting practice, he\u00a0showcased\u00a0his power, and the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diario de Cuba<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0wrote:\u00a0\u201cBabe Ruth performed phenomenal acts in his practice. Four times he hit home runs over the front fence. It can be said with certainty that no one has ever hit such phenomenal home runs on the fields of Cuba Park.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then began the game between the Babe Ruth team and Santiago, a local team reinforced with stars like Bartolo Portuondo, Valent\u00edn\u00a0Dreke\u00a0and Alejandro Oms. The indomitable team won 4-0, while the home run king\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0hit a single home run. He only managed a double to center field in the sixth inning. The hero was a pitcher\u00a0\u201cwho had nothing going for him\u201d: Pablo Guill\u00e9n. With little velocity but surgical control, he struck out the visiting star three times.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On\u00a0Sunday\u00a0the 21st, the second\u00a0\u201csensational game\u201d\u00a0was played, also before a\u00a0\u201clegion of fans.\u201d\u00a0During warm-ups, Ruth repeatedly\u00a0hit home runs, some\u00a0balls\u00a0landing as far as San Pedro and San F\u00e9lix streets. Oh, and your women are, without a doubt, among the most elegant in the world.\u201d\u00a0He was as much a gentleman as he was a compulsive gambler. For days, nothing else was talked about in Santiago: his visit, the photo with the\u00a0bat\u00a0slung over his shoulder and his off-field escapades. Before leaving for the United States on November 28, he stayed two more weeks in the capital, not to play\u00a0baseball, but to indulge in his dangerous hobby: gambling. Jai Alai regulars saw him lose fortunes on the\u00a0sports\u00a0lottery; he also gambled at the\u00a0Marianao\u00a0racetrack, went sightseeing and fished.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The visit was an event of international significance.\u00a0\u201cBabe Ruth is playing winter baseball in Cuba,\u201d\u00a0announced the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Daily Illinois<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u201cReportedly, ships traveling from the United States to Havana are installing armor plating to avoid being torpedoed by missed home runs.\u201d\u00a0But the Bambino\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0turn the metaphor into reality. Some justified his\u00a0poor performance\u00a0by citing the hot weather; others, that he was eager to please his fans and swung at bad pitches.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Evening World<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ran the headline:\u00a0\u201cBabe Ruth returns after a nearly home run-less tour of Cuba,\u201d\u00a0noting that\u00a0\u201cthe funny thing about the trip was that Babe\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0live up to his reputation. The locals believed he could hit a home run whenever he wanted, but he only managed three during his entire stay.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The series was interpreted as a demonstration of Cuban baseball\u2019s strength. The\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diario de la Marina<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0elevated the analysis to an epic, almost warlike scale:\u00a0\u201cThis fact,\u00a0simple at first glance, has\u00a0great importance. It is the Cuban army invading the United States\u2026the Colossus of the North crushed by the weight of our bodies. Photo: Author\u2019s archive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the mid-1950s, the\u00a0local customs\u00a0writer Carlos\u00a0Robre\u00f1o\u00a0continued to evoke the visit with the same iconoclastic idea:\u00a0\u201cCuba is a country where imported idols constantly suffer harsh setbacks.\u201d\u00a0And while Ty Cobb had been struck out by M\u00e9ndez and\u00a0pitched\u00a0out at second by Striker Gonz\u00e1lez, the fearsome Bambino, wearing a uniform not associated with the Yankees, saw his greatness overshadowed when Torriente \u2014 wearing the Almendares\u00a0uniform\u00a0\u2014 hit three home runs and a two-bagger off him in a single game.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even so, the Cuban strikeouts were merely a colorful footnote in his career. Nothing could prevent Babe Ruth from going down in history, both on and off the field, as a true legend.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"gtx-trans\" style=\"position:
