They should be there, on the sidewalks,\u00a0in\u00a0doorways, in parks, as if they still walked among us. In this way, places would tangibly preserve the memory of those who truly gave them soul.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That idea came back to me when I saw on social media\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/holguinenfotos\/posts\/pfbid02MiDhrwTWBwmXqrXEg24UZn8hNVxGmAJRPd7tcjwcaCKADTMZzirkFdxiafemsNHdl?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZWcj8QuMPBGqPz4zGiXytqNFiaBzVk8ZJWqijjMKPde41Fcr2UFCH_MTRIvJ7ziljdflHzf0-ChYjKiikOuAiWWT4bECSyCLGZyWPDj1k_heTDy_WAe7VfwRkOwmPBBDRGb1qugJbZKkK6EOAAxdzlawm4ZuU2yvn-uG3AB5Orucw&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0news\u00a0of the death of Eleuterio Estrada Vald\u00e9s<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the peanut vendor from Holgu\u00edn. But not just any peanut vendor:\u00a0\u201cTHE\u201d\u00a0peanut vendor. The man\u00a0who, with his broad smile, piercing blue eyes and unmistakable calls\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll trade peanuts for money,\u201d\u00a0\u201cNo money, no peanuts,\u201d\u00a0\u201cPretty women\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0pay, but they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0eat either\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0became an inseparable part of the soundscape of the city of parks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 788px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Eleuterio-foto-Kaloian-3-788x1366.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"788\" height=\"1366\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago. I was walking through Calixto Garc\u00eda Park when I heard, behind me, that unmistakable call. More than seeing him, I heard him.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was a reflex: I turned around, and there he was, dressed in an improbable combination of colors, like something out of a naive painting. Seeing him was, in a way, seeing my own life in Holgu\u00edn flash before my eyes. His voice\u00a0\u2014\u00a0playful, repetitive, almost musical, though raspy\u00a0\u2014\u00a0is part of the soundtrack of that city I always return to.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I stopped him, bought some cones of\u00a0peanuts\u00a0and asked for a photo. He laughed, with that laugh of his that was also a\u00a0street\u00a0vendor\u2019s\u00a0cry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Eleuterio-foto-Kaloian-2-1366x1072.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1366\" height=\"1072\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCompay, now with cell phones, people stop me all the time to take pictures. Even those\u00a0who\u2019ve\u00a0gone up North ask me for little videos\u00a0saying\u00a0\u2018No money, no peanuts.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We talked for a few minutes. He was affable as always; I was surprised to be talking for the first time with someone\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0seen hundreds of times. And I thought, as we said goodbye, how curious everything is: if it\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0for the\u00a0nostalgia\u00a0I felt listening to him, I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0have taken his picture or even asked to talk. How many people like him slip through our fingers because of routine.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eleuterio told me he was born in Bayamo and that, as a young man, he moved with his family to Holgu\u00edn. For years he was a bricklayer: scaffolding, the\u00a0scorching morning\u00a0sun, calloused hands. But then the Special Period\u00a0arrived\u00a0and,\u00a0like so many others, he had to reinvent himself. At a neighbor\u2019s suggestion, he started selling peanuts. A simple job that he turned into a street performance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1366px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Eleuterio-foto-Kaloian-1366x911.jpg\" alt=\"Photo:\u00a0Kaloian.\u00a0\" width=\"1366\" height=\"911\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Kaloian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I asked him where his unique street cries came from. He always told the story with pride.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI went to offer a cone of peanuts to a man sitting in the park. He told me he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0have any money. I gave him the\u00a0peanuts\u00a0and,\u00a0in return, he\u00a0helped me\u00a0come up with\u00a0an idea\u00a0right then and there:\u00a0\u2018I\u2019ll trade peanuts for money.\u2019\u00a0Then came\u00a0\u2018No money, no peanuts,\u2019\u00a0and later,\u00a0\u2018Pretty women don\u2019t pay, but they don\u2019t eat either.\u2019\u00a0And you know how it is\u2026people laughed when they heard me coming. And of course, they bought.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eleuterio\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0need anything more. With a cone of peanuts and a clever phrase, he erected a small monument of popular affection.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The news of his death spread quickly. Holgu\u00edn groups on social media were filled with messages, memories,\u00a0photos\u00a0and recordings of his voice. Local media\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and even a couple in Miami\u00a0\u2014\u00a0also reported it. Something unusual for a street vendor, but natural for someone who was a symbol of the city.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHolgu\u00edn is in mourning,\u201d\u00a0wrote a community page.\u00a0\u201cWe lost Eleuterio, the peanut vendor. He\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0just another vendor: he was an institution. His unique cry became the soundtrack of our daily lives.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another message summed up what many felt:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s incredible how such a simple and humble person earned so much praise from his community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amid the sadness, one comment brought a smile to more than one face:\u00a0\u201cUp there he must be selling and calling out peanuts to the saints for money.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0easy to imagine him like that: walking among the clouds, with his can, his cap and that mix of mischief and tenderness in his eyes.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0surely already made Saint Peter laugh.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eleuterio\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0have a statue in the park. At least not for now. But his presence\u00a0\u2014\u00a0his voice, above all\u00a0\u2014\u00a0will continue to resonate in the memories of those of us who grew up listening to him.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the invisible sculpture that\u00a0remains: the one that comes alive every time someone says\u00a0\u201cmoney\u201d\u00a0in his own way, or when a street vendor\u2019s cry stops us in our tracks because it reminds us of him.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holgu\u00edn, like so many cities, is also made up of anonymous people who maintain their identity without appearing in any books: vendors, street criers, drivers,\u00a0singers, women watching the street from their doorways, old men smoking tobacco on a park bench; characters who add color without even knowing it. The city would be different without them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps that\u2019s\u00a0why that street cry threw me off: it was like returning to a fragment of\u00a0my\u00a0childhood. Memory\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0only written with\u00a0grand\u00a0events, but also with everyday voices, like the street\u00a0vendor\u2019s\u00a0cries that\u00a0accompany\u00a0us.
