So much so that today he is considered one of the leading experts on its history and\u00a0possesses\u00a0the\u00a0world\u2019s\u00a0largest collection of objects related to the cabaret.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1169px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Foto-9-2.jpg\" alt=\"Frank Hinrichs shows a small part of his collection related to the Tropicana cabaret. Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He first arrived in Havana as a tourist in the early 1990s, attracted by\u00a0\u201cthe unique mix of history, architecture, beaches, salsa, revolution and extraordinary joie de vivre that Cuba offers, despite the adverse living conditions on the socialist island and the morbidity of the times that were called the\u00a0\u2018special period\u2019.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou might wonder how it\u2019s possible that a non-Cuban born in the 1960s is so fascinated by the pre-revolutionary history of Cuba\u2019s most spectacular nightclub,\u201d\u00a0Hinrichs told us. And he adds:\u00a0\u201cWhen I set foot in Tropicana, it was love at first sight.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI felt as if I were visiting an unreal world of exotic splendor, compared to the cold grayness of my home and my Northern European culture. I was\u00a0immediately\u00a0captivated by the starry Cuban sky, its warm moon, the sensuality and vitality of the show and the dancers, the exciting music and all of it in a tropical garden setting. Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Was that the beginning of your interest in Tropicana?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This experience awakened in me the desire to learn more about the history of this legendary nightspot, and I soon discovered that it was a national icon and the most famous cabaret of the 1950s.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I realized that the show I saw was enjoyable and adapted to the expectations of Western tourists, but it was only a shadow of what Tropicana was in the pre-revolutionary era.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So\u00a0I familiarized myself with its history, spoke with contemporary witnesses, contacted the family of the former owners and some of the last dancers from the golden age who were still alive. They all shared their anecdotes and photo collections with me. Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0how you started collecting photographs and items related to the cabaret&#8230;.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0heyday\u00a0and history of Tropicana and its protagonists in the 1950s are so fascinating that they inspired me to become a passionate admirer and collector of photos and memorabilia from that era for the past 25 years. Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What types of items make\u00a0up\u00a0your collection?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to 1,200 original photographs, the collection\u00a0contains\u00a0countless printed advertisements, casino chips and dice, bingo cards, and various objects of interest, such as menus, postcards, brochures, souvenir photo\u00a0holders\u00a0and other curiosities: cocktail stirrers, matchbooks, cocktail napkins and even a complete set of original VIP tableware.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1287px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Foto-7.jpg\" alt=\"Tropicana postcard with an image of the casino under the glass roof (1954). Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The distinctive element of all the high-quality promotional material was the iconic spinning dancer, a slender female figure designed by the artist\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/artes-visuales\/forma-espacio-y-luz-de-rita-longa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rita Longa<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in 1950, which represented temptation and delicacy, and which still stands as a sculpture in the entrance area of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the cabaret.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 877px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Foto-10.jpg\" alt=\"Collector Frank Hinrichs next to the Tropicana dancer statue in October 2024. The thrill of finding a new photo, a printed advertisement, or promotional material lies in putting together the pieces of a puzzle to uncover a compelling narrative about the history of the cabaret.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The search for new pieces and following clues in books, magazines, notes on the back of a photo or interviews with the last surviving dancers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0or their families\u00a0\u2014\u00a0is especially exciting when you discover something\u00a0that for a long time\u00a0you\u2019ve been looking for: for example, the name of a specific show or a dancer who until then appeared unidentified.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How did you obtain the pieces in the collection?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The vast majority\u00a0\u2014\u00a0especially the photos\u00a0\u2014\u00a0were found in Cuba. They were used for marketing and promotional activities and in articles in publications such as the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diario de la Marina<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or the Cuban entertainment magazine\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SHOW<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Original copies were given to the dancers,\u00a0musicians\u00a0and artists of the shows as souvenirs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since the years working in the cabarets were, in many cases, the best time of their lives, many dancers, musicians and artists amassed\u00a0large quantities\u00a0of photos as personal collections. When they passed away, their families often sold these mementos to obtain funds for basic needs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My greatest successes as a collector were those moments when I managed to\u00a0acquire\u00a0one of these family collections. Photo: Courtesy of Frank Hinrichs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the most unique or unusual item you own?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The passport of the famous choreographer\u00a0Roderico\u00a0(Rodney or\u00a0El\u00a0Mago) Neyra and the original of his contract.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My passion for collecting is clearly driven by the desire to preserve this unique material for future generations, especially for those with Cuban roots, offering them the opportunity to relive those glamorous early years of Tropicana through the eyes of an observer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1152px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Foto-4-3.jpg\" alt=\"The\u00a0Portuguese-Brazilian\u00a0singer and\u00a0actress\u00a0Carmen Miranda on the Tropicana stage in July 1955. Cuba\u2019s unparalleled entertainment industry in the\u00a0\u201cfabulous fifties.\u201d\u00a0Contributing to that body of photographic evidence, a monument for those who will come after, is a rewarding legacy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through the photos, background\u00a0research\u00a0and interviews, I learned how much talent, passion,\u00a0vision\u00a0and entrepreneurial spirit it took for so many people to transform a simple Cuban mansion into the most exotic and glamorous nightclub in the
