Between the memories of the first immigrants and the practices of their descendants, a history of integration unfolds, spanning more than 100 years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The oldest documented link between Japan and Cuba\u00a0dates back to\u00a01614, with the stopover in Havana of the samurai and diplomat Hasekura\u00a0Tsunenaga. This would be the symbolic precedent for the Japanese who began arriving on the island at the end of the 19th century, particularly young men with plans to work and eventually return to their homeland.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Japones_otm_1.jpg\" alt=\"Monument in Havana to Hasekura\u00a0Tsunenaga, the first samurai to visit Cuba. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Japanese immigration to Cuba took place in several periods between 1898 and the post-war era, with settlements scattered throughout\u00a0almost the\u00a0entire country and a significant concentration on what was then the Isle of Pines. Despite the\u00a0initial\u00a0expectations of the newcomers, political and economic crises, coupled with changes in immigration laws, led many to put down permanent roots on the island.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During World War II, Japanese immigrants were seen as\u00a0\u201cenemy aliens\u201d\u00a0and many suffered imprisonment, confiscation of property and surveillance by the authorities. But although this dark experience left deep scars on the Japanese community, most decided to stay and\u00a0rebuild their lives and businesses, embracing Cuba as their second homeland.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Casa-Museo-Asia_Otma_11.jpg\" alt=\"Part of the Japanese collection at the House of Asia in Havana. Its members combine Japanese surnames, family\u00a0customs\u00a0and a\u00a0predominantly Cuban\u00a0identity, along with values\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">associated with discipline, punctuality and responsibility attributed to their Japanese heritage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In their daily lives, the descendants have\u00a0maintained\u00a0cultural fragments: culinary references adapted to local ingredients, family narratives about war and exile, and a work ethic visible in fields such as agriculture,\u00a0sports\u00a0and martial arts, where Japanese pioneers were instrumental in introducing jiu-jitsu and karate-do to the island.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Japon_otma2.jpg\" alt=\"Mausoleum of the Japanese community in Col\u00f3n Cemetery, Havana. Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 15px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With a sense of community and territorial structures that function as spaces for support,\u00a0passing on\u00a0of memory and connection with Japanese institutions, Cuban Nikkei (people of Japanese descent) keep the heritage of their ancestors alive and are, at the same time, an effective bridge between Japan and Cuba, within a framework of bilateral relations that includes cooperation, scholarships and humanitarian aid.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Places like Col\u00f3n Cemetery\u00a0\u2014\u00a0where Buddhist ceremonies are held in front of the Japanese community\u2019s mausoleum\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the House of Asia with its collections from the Asian country, and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/canaldigital\/galerias\/enfoco\/hasekura-tsunenaga-un-samurai-en-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">monument\u00a0to\u00a0the first\u00a0samurai\u00a0who set foot on Cuban soil<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0are some of the places where Japan\u2019s legacy in Cuba is preserved today.
