Every year, hundreds of foreign artists attend the event, a greater number of Cuban musicians participate and,\u00a0among them, there\u00a0are many creators from the island who live and pursue their careers abroad and who find in this intense week of music a reason to return to their native stages.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is the case of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/musica\/dayramir-gonzalez-el-pianista-que-soy-le-debe-mucho-a-lo-que-vivi-en-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dayramir Gonz\u00e1lez<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who in 2010 became the first Cuban to receive the Presidential Scholarship at Berklee College of Music and has since settled in New York, where he has\u00a0carried out\u00a0most of his career.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before that, the pianist, composer,\u00a0arranger\u00a0and music producer had already won the\u00a0JoJazz\u00a0competition, an event that for decades was the breeding ground for Cuban jazz, and had released his first album in Cuba,\u00a0Dayramir\u00a0&amp; Habana\u00a0enTRANC\u00e9, which won three\u00a0Cubadisco\u00a0awards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dayramir\u00a0returned to Jazz Plaza this year, as he has been doing in recent years, always with a proposal that has been an important part of the event\u2019s program, as was his 2020 concert in tribute to Juan\u00a0Formell; but he has also become a collaborator of the event, facilitating the participation of important\u00a0U.S.\u00a0pianists such as Emmett Cohen, Aaron Goldberg and Christian Sands at the Cuban event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dayramir Gonz\u00e1lez ft. Brenda Navarrete - Orun a Formell (Tributo a Juan Formell y los Van van)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WDfuUxuvthQ?list=PLp4pvbaiL_sm8m3jH1dETlqNRxqNafeM0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year,\u00a0Dayramir\u00a0has given several performances, accompanied by different musical ensembles; he has given workshops in art schools, as he usually does; and this Sunday, February 1st, on the last day of the event, he\u00a0have\u00a0a grand concert in the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theater in tribute to Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project came about through an idea given to me by Jos\u00e9 Dumet, the director of the Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez ensemble,\u00a0and also\u00a0because this year marks his 115th birthday.\u00a0So\u00a0we wanted to\u00a0make\u00a0an album, a\u00a0documentary\u00a0and\u00a0give\u00a0a concert that could balance what Arsenio was like in the 1950s, what he experienced from a social\u00a0perspective\u00a0and how\u00a0Dayramir\u00a0sees him today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From a musical standpoint,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to emphasize, both for those who know and those who\u00a0don\u2019t, that Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez marked a turning point in Cuban music. He had the vision, as a social chronicler, to add the piano to the traditional septet\u2019s\u00a0tres\u00a0guitar, with Lil\u00ed Mart\u00ednez; he incorporated congas into the bongos; he added more trumpets to a single trumpet, and thus created what is known as the\u00a0emsemble\u2019s\u00a0sound.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the late\u00a01940s and\u00a01950s, Sonora Matancera formed a musical movement that later, when they moved to New York, along with Tito Puente and other musicians, gave rise to the New York salsa movement. And, on the other hand, here in Cuba, there was\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/chucho-valdes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chucho Vald\u00e9s<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0Irakere. So, all that Black social identity, that social effervescence, was a wonderful symbiosis of colors and sounds, but Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez was the creator of it all.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I started working more deeply on the experience of who Arsenio was, I thought this was\u00a0a golden opportunity\u00a0for young people to better understand who the precursor of the salsa sound and the sound of today\u2019s more contemporary Cuban music was.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why always return to Cuba and especially to Jazz Plaza?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every year I create four big projects that keep me up at night and motivate me, because one\u2019s career, if not nurtured in a very conscious and careful way, can be abandoned.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The need to earn money, the need to survive, often leads you to take jobs like teaching that consume many hours, and you\u00a0have to\u00a0do it to secure that little bit of money.\u00a0But, at the same time, you have to remember that you are an artist and that soul cannot be lost.\u00a0I nurture it by undertaking at least three or four big projects a year, and I always reserve one of them for my Havana Jazz Plaza, with my people, with my fellow Cubans, with my own.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0like a moral commitment, a spiritual connection, because\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0always worked\u00a0very hard\u00a0and consciously to be an artist who has a voice in his own country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like every artist, one dreams of traveling the world, succeeding in New York, in Paris, being\u00a0welcomed\u00a0in international spaces, but the spiritual joy I feel when I arrive in my country and am recognized by young people, playing for my neighbors and seeing that all generations of Cubans give me and my art a place is wonderful.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0about being myself again and not forgetting who I am, wherever I am. Sometimes work forces you to stay away longer than you would like; so, this Jazz Festival is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with the essence of\u00a0Dayramir.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And although you receive the blessing of being able to live in a different society, in New York, which is so musically rich,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0still not your home.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why I always say that New York is a place of work and Havana is my home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Part of your programs in Cuba is dedicated to music students. Do you\u00a0seek\u00a0to teach on the island as you do in the United States?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I always had the vision that all the opportunities I had\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I was selected from among so many young people who, like me, have the same talent\u00a0\u2014\u00a0was a commitment: if I was absorbing all that jazz from the highest level, with Bobby McFerrin, with Joe Lovano, with Danilo P\u00e9rez, receiving the specific nuances of how a big band sounds, all that wonderful spirituality that was given to me, I had a duty to give it back to the young people who didn\u2019t have that opportunity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The educational aspect is also\u00a0a very important\u00a0element for me, because whoever teaches reinforces what they know and is also a way of sharing with young people how to organize the study process. Music can be quite demanding in terms of the time and dedication it requires. If you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have an ecosystem that helps you stay focused,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very easy\u00a0to get off track.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The New York\/Cuba Collective visit Escuela Nacional De Arte (ENA 2023)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y19whoEXOp8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An ecosystem means having an instrument, having parents who make sure that the child has the peace and space to be able to study. It means having a music conservatory, with the necessary elements for that talent to flourish. An ecosystem also implies having access\u00a0\u2014\u00a0like us, who are so privileged\u00a0\u2014\u00a0to culture without it costing a fortune. So, our privilege as Cubans is that we have an ecosystem ready for\u00a0those\u00a0talented children\u00a0to continue their journey.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To this, we must add that a balance is needed, because, for the most part, our\u00a0educators are not necessarily performing artists. They are\u00a0very good\u00a0educators, but they\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0experienced being artists on\u00a0a stage. That\u2019s why it\u2019s also important to share with young people that when you sit down to play, you have to command the stage with confidence: you arrive, you make eye contact with your audience, who have come to see you and welcome you; you welcome them, you pick up your instrument and that entire space is yours, and you\u2019re going to play with mastery and preparation. When you finish playing, you wait for the audience to applaud you, because you gave your all, and you receive that applause with great humility, but also with pride, because blessings are meant to be received. You thank the audience for coming and you\u00a0return.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Remember\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I always tell my students\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that you have to be musically prepared, because you\u2019re only as good as your last concert.\u00a0The way you take care of your music, it will take care of you.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In recent years,\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0been acting as a kind of mediator, encouraging\u00a0U.S.\u00a0artists to visit the\u00a0Festival. Why take on that task?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m\u00a0fortunate to listen to many geniuses around the world who have\u00a0a very strong\u00a0voice, and I want my fellow Cubans to also\u00a0have the opportunity to\u00a0hear the talent of Christian Sands, Aaron\u00a0Goldberg\u00a0or Emmet Cohen.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0a golden opportunity\u00a0to bring them to Havana and share those harmonic colors, those composers and pianists who already have a recognized voice and artistry around the world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You have\u00a0a very broad\u00a0academic background and, at the same time, that pedagogical connection that you\u00a0maintain\u00a0to this day. Do you consider formal training or practical experience to be more important in music?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You have to find a balance between the two.\u00a0Having\u00a0formal\u00a0education is important. I say you need 60% formal education, because training gives you critical thinking, organization, vocabulary, attention to phrasing and\u00a0different types\u00a0of techniques; for any instrumentalist, the conservatory provides that.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But the street gives you the ability to make decisions when what you plan\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0go as you want.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0when you\u00a0have to\u00a0use it: harmonically, you were playing a solo, you made a mistake and you found another way. The street teaches you that if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0playing with\u00a0three congas and one is missing, then you do it\u00a0a different way. It also gives you the structure of the\u00a0dance, because\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no way you can play Cuban music if, as a creator, composer, arranger,\u00a0orchestrator\u00a0or conductor, you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know or feel those sounds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How did you envision being a Cuban artist when you were in Cuba and how do you envision, understand, and defend it today as a Cuban artist outside the country?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0in Cuba, you dream. My vision was always to be a leader in Havana. Unfortunately, neither La Zorra y\u00a0el\u00a0Cuervo nor the Jazz Caf\u00e9 on Paseo exist anymore. They were the two most important venues at the pinnacle of jazz in Cuba. We all grew up there, and at that time, many foreigners came, and we had that dream of playing from Cuba and wondered what kind of music we would make so that foreign listeners would hear the best from here.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now that I experience it from the outside,\u00a0I feel I\u00a0have an even greater responsibility, because\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like a conscious ambassador of Cuban music.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0embraced it that way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being an ambassador depends on how you define your homeland, because we all have our own Cuba, with everything that entails. But when you ask me what I think of Cuba, I focus on all the beautiful things the country still has.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the\u00a0people, who\u00a0remain wonderful, to\u00a0its\u00a0food,\u00a0its\u00a0music,\u00a0its\u00a0schools,\u00a0its\u00a0resilience,\u00a0its\u00a0ability to overcome what we have and what we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have, and to create more with what we do have.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your country is what\u00a0represents\u00a0you in Paris, in\u00a0New York. You are a Cuban pianist, you are Cuban. And that Cuban identity also means that when you are asked about your Cuba, about your love for it,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0like talking about your mother. Our Cuba is\u00a0us,\u00a0our identity is what defines us.\u00a0So, if that defines you, you have to keep nurturing it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do you wish for the future of Cuban music?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today it is in\u00a0very good\u00a0health from a creative point of view: many very original projects continue to exist.\u00a0The only thing we lack is for the world to continue opening up so that our music is on platforms supported by major record labels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That wonderful catalog of so much talent only lacks a platform and to be heard in a more commercial way.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0committed to bringing\u00a0U.S.\u00a0musicians to Cuba every year, so they can experience firsthand what Cuban music is like and how young people are playing today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1140px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Dayramir-Gonzalez.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Lied Lorain.\u00a0\" width=\"1140\" height=\"815\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Lied Lorain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What has been the hardest thing about being a Cuban artist outside of Cuba?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The hardest thing for me has been not letting myself be influenced by so many people who tell you:\u00a0\u201cStay here, forget about that, speak badly of Cuba.\u201d\u00a0The most\u00a0difficult thing\u00a0has been\u00a0maintaining\u00a0that level of cultural and social commitment to myself: I chose to be a Cuban who visits the island, who drinks from it firsthand, not a Cuban who dissociates himself.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not criticizing those who become uprooted from the country, but since I chose to be a voice within Cuba and someone who has influence in my own country, the most\u00a0difficult thing\u00a0has been defending my position with honesty.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No one can criticize you for being honest with yourself, for defending your own voice and what Cuba represents to me, what my music teachers\u00a0represent, my native Cerro neighborhood.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be afraid to say that everyone has their own experience with Cuba. I had the experience of a different Cuba. I was privileged.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0a privileged Black man. I had a talent that found an ecosystem in which it could flourish, and\u00a0somehow\u00a0I always had the vision that Cuba and I are one, wherever I am.<\/span><span
