For 13 unforgettable minutes, Benito Antonio Mart\u00ednez Ocasio\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Bad Bunny\u00a0\u2014\u00a0gave us goosebumps with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=G6FuWd4wNd8&amp;list=RDG6FuWd4wNd8&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">a\u00a0performance<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fpermeated from beginning to end with symbols of our\u00a0Latino\u00a0culture: the child asleep\u00a0on the chairs during the party, the wedding, the sugarcane field, the shaved ice, the blackouts, the diverse and irreverent\u00a0Latino\u00a0bodies taking over the party in someone else\u2019s home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All of this in a context\u00a0where\u00a0hiding that\u00a0Latino culture\u00a0has become, for many, a way to survive, to avoid deportations, family\u00a0separations\u00a0and persecution in a country where almost half of the migrants come from\u00a0Latin\u00a0America and the Caribbean.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the door of\u00a0\u201cLa Casita\u201d\u00a0opens and Benito walks part of the path that leads to the truck where he will perform\u00a0\u201cEoO\u201d\u00a0(<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Deb\u00ed\u00a0tirar\u00a0m\u00e1s\u00a0fotos<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 2025), the camera makes its way to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bersilx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bersil\u00a0Iglesias<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f(Havana, September 15, 1999). Benito is close, but it is the Cuban woman who commands the frame with just a few seconds of dancing while\u00a0\u201cGasolina,\u201d\u00a0the reggaeton anthem of the 2000s, plays in the background\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a song she herself danced to countless times when she still lived in Cuba.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThat song means so much to the\u00a0Latino\u00a0community.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0danced and\u00a0sung\u00a0it at the top of my lungs since I was a child. To know that at that moment I\u00a0represented\u00a0all the\u00a0Latino\u00a0women who\u00a0\u2018want more gasoline\u2019\u2026I still\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0believe it,\u201d\u00a0Bersil\u00a0told\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">OnCuba<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, her voice filled with emotion, in a WhatsApp conversation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bersil4-1024x1366.jpg\" alt=\"Bersil\u00a0Iglesias during the Super Bowl 2026 halftime show. We Cubans, who took pride in watching her dance and bring all her flair to the camera in those brief\u00a0moments, know her name and where to find her on social media. But before meeting Benito at the Super Bowl,\u00a0Bersil\u00a0had already spent years building her career in the world of dance and entertainment. Her appearance during the halftime show of one of the world\u2019s most famous sporting events could mark a turning point between her\u00a0previous\u00a0trajectory and a new chapter to come.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She arrived in the United States in 2004 and almost gave up dancing, driven more by her parents\u2019\u00a0desire than her own\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that she finish her studies in Criminology.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her family\u2019s story shares both hardships and triumphs with that of many other Cuban families who emigrated to the land of promised dreams, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0something\u00a0Bersil\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0forgotten.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs an immigrant and the daughter of immigrants, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0take any opportunity that comes my way lightly, much less this one. That night I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0alone on that stage: those who came before me, those who are here\u00a0today\u00a0and those who will join me on this journey were with me. It was an honor to\u00a0represent\u00a0what I struggled to see on the big stages during my childhood. I hope that all Afro-Latino\u00a0girls around the world can see themselves reflected in this and know that there is a place for them too. May they fully occupy it,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUokOwkksC7\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">she wrote<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on her Instagram profile alongside a picture of herself holding her flag, the Cuban flag.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How and when did you discover that dance was your calling?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s\u00a0hard to say exactly how and when. Since I was a child in Cuba, my house was always filled with all kinds of music, and my father was the life of every family party: he would get all my aunts dancing, from salsa to Boney M hits.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My first classes were in Cuban folklore at age three, and I started dancing flamenco in Miami at eleven. Although I discovered years later that dance is not only my passion but my purpose,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0always had rumba in my veins and a love of art in my heart for as long as I can remember.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 975px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bersil2-975x1366.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Courtesy of the interviewee\" width=\"975\" height=\"1366\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Courtesy of the interviewee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Where and how did your training begin?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unfortunately, I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0say that my artistic training took place in Cuba. And I say unfortunately because I know that my island is incredibly talented; so much so that, even with the difficulties, Cuban art continues to reach the rest of the world after all these years. Although I\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0train there, my first dance teacher was\u00a0Idmaray\u00a0Breuil, principal dancer with the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/danza\/lizt-alfonso-habana-fenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lizt\u00a0Alfonso<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ballet<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for several years. Much of her\u00a0methodology\u00a0was inspired by how the famous Cuban ballet company trained.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What dance styles have you\u00a0trained\u00a0throughout your career?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Actually, there\u2019s\u00a0little I\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0trained, even if only once. I feel that the best thing we can do as movement artists is to become cultured and versatile in the language of dance. Throughout my career,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0trained in hip-hop, house, dancehall, jazz, contemporary, flamenco, Afro styles,\u00a0Latino\u00a0styles\u2026and the list keeps growing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When did you emigrate to the United States? What was that process like on a personal and professional level?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I emigrated to the United States at the age of four with my parents and grandmother. My family was already looking to leave the island due to political interference in my mother\u2019s career; she was a pharmacist at the time. Then my father won\u00a0the visa\u00a0lottery\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which in Cuba we called the \u201cBombo\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that granted legal visas to the United States. They both took advantage of that opportunity, and we\u00a0started from scratch\u00a0in Miami in 2004. I will always be grateful for all the sacrifices my parents made; without them, none of this would have been possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once you arrived, what were the main challenges in entering the world of dance and entertainment?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I feel that my biggest challenge\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and at the same time, my greatest strength\u00a0\u2014\u00a0has always been my physical appearance.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a06 feet tall, have curly Afro hair and am a Black woman. I very rarely saw girls or women who looked like me in the dance world.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0had to work hard on my mental state during times when\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0felt isolated or rejected by an industry that, even today,\u00a0remains\u00a0attached to traditional ideals in a modern world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1025px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bersil3-1025x1366.jpg\" alt=\"Bersil\u00a0Iglesias during the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show. What\u00a0made\u00a0you\u00a0hold on\u00a0during the most\u00a0difficult times?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yes.\u00a0When I started university, I stopped dancing to focus on my studies in Criminology and Education.\u00a0Many children of immigrants are taught that education always comes first. Although I had my family\u2019s support with dance, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0see how I could turn it into a real profession. I became very depressed during that first year of university and,\u00a0before starting my second year, I decided that art and dance were the only things I\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0leave behind. Today, in addition to my professional career in the business world, I have a degree in dance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How has your experience as an immigrant influenced your artistic identity and the way you present yourself on stage today?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My experience as an immigrant and the Cuban culture I carry within me are present in everything I do artistically and in how I present myself on stage. I\u2019m not afraid to intertwine what I learn today with what has been with me since I was born in Havana: from how I dress in rehearsals, to the hip movements I add to the choreography or feeling that all of Cuba is with me every time I step onto a stage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before the Super Bowl, what do you consider to be the most important moments or projects of your professional career?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before the Super Bowl, one of my favorite projects was the campaign I filmed with Agent Provocateur in 2022. It filled me with pride that Cuban beauty was highlighted globally. I also fondly remember shoots and videos that allowed me to further explore acting, such as\u00a0\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Wmle-VUjtkY&amp;list=RDWmle-VUjtkY&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">XQ\u00a0te\u00a0pones\u00a0as\u00ed<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0by Feid with Yandel, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o9mS6DsiuyA&amp;list=RDo9mS6DsiuyA&amp;start_radio=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cHands on me\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by Jason Derulo with Meghan Trainor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout your career,\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0also worked with major\u00a0Latino\u00a0artists,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DLiTK-9yWDV\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">like\u00a0Jennifer Lopez<\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. What have those collaborations meant to you, and what did you learn from them?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working with\u00a0Latino\u00a0artists always feels different because it becomes personal. They remind me of when I was a little girl dreaming from my living room every time I saw them on TV.\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0look at my mom with wide eyes and tell her that one day I was going to do that too. I never knew\u00a0how, but I knew it would happen. Working with them is a feeling\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0hard to\u00a0explain:\u00a0they remind me that anything is possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How did you receive the news that you would be\u00a0participating\u00a0in the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The news came to me unexpectedly. When I joined the dance troupe, along with five other\u00a0Latino\u00a0dancers from Miami, they had already been rehearsing for weeks with more than 140 dancers. They called us because they were developing camera moments and wanted performers who could authentically\u00a0represent\u00a0Latino\u00a0culture.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0how the\u00a0\u201cGasolina\u201d\u00a0moment was born. Everything happened so\u00a0fast\u00a0and we had to learn the entire show in just a few days, but we pulled it off. My heartfelt thanks to the choreography team\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Charm\u00a0La\u2019Donna, Karina Ortiz, Jovanni\u00a0Soto\u00a0and Melany Mercedes\u00a0\u2014\u00a0for creating a unique and authentic Super Bowl with such a beautiful message.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tell us about preparing for such a demanding performance.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There were many days of\u00a0rehearsals\u00a0in both Los Angeles and Santa Clara, California. The physical demands increased as the show progressed, and each day I danced more choreography. The long nights and the physical strain were especially noticeable in Santa Clara, when\u00a0the hundreds\u00a0of people who were part of the Super Bowl joined us. For me, it was crucial to stay focused and take care\u00a0of\u00a0my warm-up and rest to arrive at the performance with the same energy I had when I started rehearsals.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your most visible moment was when Daddy Yankee\u2019s\u00a0\u201cGasolina\u201d\u00a0played. What do you remember about that moment?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From the moment I knew I would be the girl in front of the camera when\u00a0\u201cGasolina\u201d\u00a0played, I felt like my heart was going to burst. That moment when Benito opened the door to\u00a0\u201cLa Casita\u201d\u00a0was very meaningful.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0important to remember where reggaeton comes from: before it was global music, it was the expression of a community that was discriminated against and marginalized in the Caribbean and\u00a0Latin\u00a0America for many years. Beyond\u00a0who\u00a0I am as a dancer, I wanted them to see who I am as a person and the beautiful island I carry with me wherever I go.\u00a0I wanted them to see not only what we have already contributed to art and music, but also everything we still have to contribute.\u00a0I also want them to understand that the current state of Cuba cannot sustain the great light that its people carry within, and that we need help. Photo: Courtesy of the interviewee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At what point did you become aware that your dance\u00a0represented\u00a0a collective history: that of Afro-Latino\u00a0and migrant women?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since childhood, I have felt that my connection to dance goes beyond myself. I had the opportunity to study the history of African,\u00a0Afro-Caribbean\u00a0and Indigenous dances, and for me, it is essential to know the culture before the steps.\u00a0I am here thanks to my ancestors, those who survived colonialism and preserved their roots.\u00a0It has not been an easy struggle for Afro-Latino\u00a0and migrant women, and I carry that history with me. I hope that when they see me, they see themselves and know that if I am there, they can be there too.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What would you have liked to see when you were a child, and what responsibility do you feel today as a role model?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a child, I had many insecurities about my identity. I grew up in a time when inclusivity\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0as common as it is today. I would have liked to see more brown skin, curly hair, diverse\u00a0nationalities\u00a0and different body types.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0happy to know\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0changing. Being able to proudly raise my flag at such a culturally and politically significant moment is something I will never forget.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What message would you send to other Cuban artists who dream of making it outside the island?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Never try to fit in.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0remember that we are people of music,\u00a0dance\u00a0and art.
