Cuban Minister of Public Health Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Portal Miranda\u00a0stated\u00a0that the\u00a0<\/span>surgery\u00a0waiting list in the country has reached 96,387 patients, of whom 11,193 are children<\/span><\/b>, a situation he\u00a0directly linked\u00a0to the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>oil embargo<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0against the island.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a column published in the newspaper\u00a0<\/span>El Heraldo de M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>, the\u00a0health minister\u00a0explained that difficulties in guaranteeing fuel and energy stability have forced the Cuban healthcare system to\u00a0<\/span>postpone non-urgent surgeries\u00a0in order to\u00a0prioritize cancer treatments<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and other life-threatening procedures\u00a0for patients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Portal Miranda, the U.S.\u00a0measures, which include sanctions, the targeting of fuel purchase contracts and pressure on shipping companies that transport oil to the island, have created a\u00a0<\/span>situation of\u00a0\u201cenergy asphyxiation\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0that directly\u00a0impacts\u00a0the functioning of the National Health System.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister pointed out that behind the figures are patients and families waiting for medical solutions, but that the current\u00a0<\/span>energy crisis<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0limits the operational capacity of hospitals and specialized services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Impact on\u00a0health programs<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The official detailed that other sensitive programs are also facing difficulties. Among them, he mentioned the monitoring of some\u00a0<\/span>32,000\u00a0pregnant women<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0who require diagnostic ultrasounds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Portal Miranda also spoke of problems with refrigerated transport\u00a0logistics\u00a0that have\u00a0<\/span>affected the\u00a0timely\u00a0administration of vaccines to\u00a0more than 30,000 children<\/span><\/b>, even though the vaccines are available in warehouses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the health system is currently treating 16,000 patients in radiotherapy and 2,888 people who depend on hemodialysis treatments, services that require a stable\u00a0power\u00a0supply to function.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reorganization of the\u00a0healthcare system<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Portal Miranda\u00a0stated\u00a0that, despite limitations, the Cuban healthcare system is not\u00a0collapsing, but\u00a0rather has\u00a0implemented reorganization measures to\u00a0maintain\u00a0essential services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the actions mentioned are the strengthening of primary care, the promotion of the family doctor and nurse program, and the use of tools such as telemedicine to guarantee continuity of medical care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The minister also emphasized the role of healthcare personnel who, he\u00a0indicated, maintain services despite the difficulties they also face in their daily lives due to the energy crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Appeal to the\u00a0international community<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In his article, the\u00a0minister of health\u00a0also called on the international community to support Cuba in the face of measures affecting access to fuel and essential resources, considering that\u00a0<\/span>public health should not be conditioned by political disputes<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe impact of the lack of energy translates directly into risks for the population, especially for the most vulnerable sectors,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0stated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The already protracted energy crisis on the island has intensified after\u00a0<\/span>Trump\u00a0signed a presidential order<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0in late January imposing tariffs on those who supply fuel to Cuba,\u00a0<\/span>halting oil shipments to the country and paralyzing much of the island\u2019s economic and social activity<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
