Once they are back in the holes of the rocks they inhabit in the bush, the females head out to the seashore again, where they spawn. When the eggs hatch, their offspring do the same journey back to the wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>The Guanahacabibes Highway and its increasing traffic \u2013a result of the growth of the tourism industry\u2014 are becoming a problem in the life cycle of red crabs, which now have a harder time reaching the ocean shore.<\/p>\n<p>With their pincers up, as if defiantly defending their \u201cnatural\u201d right to perpetuate the species, the <em>Gecarcinus ruricola<\/em> are the reason why many vehicles get their tires punctured on this highway. The damage drivers cause killing hundreds of crabs, however, is comparably higher, to the point that some of the stretches of this long road end up turned into a sort of malodorous red carpet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46852\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/red-crab-road2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46852 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/red-crab-road2.jpg\" alt=\"red crab road2\" width=\"755\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/red-crab-road2.jpg 755w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/red-crab-road2-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red crabs can cover hundreds of kilometres from the forest to the coast, where they mate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHumans are the worst enemies of these crustaceans,\u201d said Abel Sosa, an expert from the Guanahacabibes National Park. \u201cWe block their paths with our constructions, and some people even kill them for their meat, even though it is not as suited for consumption as other types of crab meat.
