{"id":49445,"date":"2015-06-16T19:11:56","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T23:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/?p=49445"},"modified":"2015-06-16T19:11:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T23:11:56","slug":"american-companies-explore-cuban-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/styles-trends\/technologies-of-communication-and-media\/american-companies-explore-cuban-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"American Companies Explore Cuban Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google executives and representatives from other business sectors travelled to Cuba as part of a delegation led by the Americas Society and Council of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>Like most of the Americans who have visited the island following the December 17 announcements that Cuba and the United States would hold talks to re-establish diplomatic relations, the members of this delegation wanted to experience Cuban reality by themselves, talk to different kinds of people, and come to their own conclusions about possible post-embargo business and cooperation opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The group included about a dozen business representatives from sectors such as food and drinks, mobile infrastructure, insurance, and international business law. During their stay, they met with government officials, entrepreneurs, co-op members, journalists, economists, artists and diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s Brett Perlmutter (Google Ideas) and Breanna Zwart (Google Access &amp; Energy) were among the visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Although this is not the first time Google executives visit the country, a recently leaked government document that revealed a national plan to provide Internet access to no less than 50{bb302c39ef77509544c7d3ea992cb94710211e0fa5985a4a3940706d9b0380de} of homes by 2020 has people wondering if there could be a possible connection here.<\/p>\n<p>According to a senior State Department official quoted by several media outlets, Google has already made a proposal to the Cuban government. \u201cWe don\u2019t know what they\u2019ve proposed, but we do know they\u2019ve proposed something,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p>In a visit the group paid to the <strong>OnCuba<\/strong> news bureau in Havana, the executives declined to comment on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>Perlmutter opined that one of Cuba\u2019s options to catch up its Internet penetration backwardness was to leapfrog wired networks, like some African countries are doing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49453\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/VISITA-GOOGLE-41.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49453 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/VISITA-GOOGLE-41.jpg\" alt=\"VISITA-GOOGLE-4\" width=\"755\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/VISITA-GOOGLE-41.jpg 755w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/VISITA-GOOGLE-41-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Breanna Zwart and Brett Perlmutter (left to right) talk to the OnCuba staff at their Havana news bureau.
