But en route to Santa Clara from Nuevitas, my train broke down at the local station. Many of the passengers got out to walk the streets under the burning sun and take a closer look at the architecture, which reveals that the town has seen better times. Many of the houses, made of wood, are reminiscent of those in the American South. There are two churches, and a good number of shops. Some of these constructions are close to collapsing; others have remained in good shape thanks to the efforts of their owners to keep them standing.
