Photo: Ronald Suarez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite their historically bad reputation, the man who has spent 40 years of his life sailing with sharks explains that their presence is vital to locating schools of tuna.<\/p>\n<p>Such is the case that another veteran fisherman, Vicente Rodr\u00edguez, believes that the animals act as a guide for the boats. \u201cWherever there\u2019s fish there\u2019s sharks.\u201d So, after locating the schools and casting their lines, a crew member sets himself to the task of throwing the bloody fish guts from the catch into the water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54614\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54614\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tiburones-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54614 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tiburones-06.jpg\" alt=\"tiburones-06\" width=\"755\" height=\"864\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tiburones-06.jpg 755w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tiburones-06-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54614\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">During the catch a crewmember throws out fish guts to attract sharks to the boat. Photo: Ronald Suarez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The objective is to attract as many of these fearful creatures as possible to the boat, in order to catch the most tuna. \u201cThis helps us to fish. We can catch several tons in just a few minutes,\u201d say Juan L\u00e1zaro.<\/p>\n<p>For many fishermen therefore, sharks are allies, and instead of hunting them down the animals are protected. \u201cMany are tagged so that they can be identified and we can track their route. Photo: Ronald Suarez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, for decades sharks have generated such fear and panic (sometimes for good reason), that most people the world over think twice before going for a swim in the sea.<\/p>\n<p>In countries like Cuba, this has obliged some travel agencies to make clear on their websites that shark attacks on humans are extremely rare.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics, in 50 years only four shark attacks have reportedly occurred in the waters surrounding the island, none of which ended in fatalities. Photo: Ronald Suarez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAstonishing, considering that many have fallen overboard into shark filled waters,\u201d notes Vicente Rodr\u00edguez. \u201cIt happened to Gustavo, a bait thrower on the Cayo Largo 012 boat and F\u00e9lix, fisherman on the 109. His crewmates pulled him out of the water using poles.<\/p>\n<p>In the commotion a shark grazed passed him taking the skin off his heel. Their skin is like sandpaper. Falling in amongst sharks is one thing, but begin eaten by one is another.<\/p>\n<p>Here in this zone, in my 30 years as a fisherman I have never heard of that happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nor has Juan L\u00e1zaro, who also fell overboard and lived to tell the tale. Nonetheless, he confesses that he would not like to repeat the experience. \u201cSometimes there are up to 40 or 50 300\u00adpound sharks around the boat, all moving aggressively. Perhaps it\u2019s because of the food we throw to them.
