I\u2019m from a generation that lived the dream of conquering space, of thousands of children who dreamed about being cosmonauts. A Cuban had done it, everything was possible.<\/p>\n
Before Arnaldo Tamayo M\u00e9ndez took off with Yuri Romanenko on the famous Soyus 38, already 36 years ago, few dreamed that someone born on the island would \u201cgo\u201d to outer space.<\/p>\n
Not only was he the first Cuban cosmonaut but also the first in Latin America. A bright path was opening up\u2026that immediately was closed again.<\/p>\n
Will there be another Cuban astronaut? I\u2019m sure hundreds of pilots have dreamed of that possibility, which right now doesn\u2019t seem very probable.<\/p>\n
And if someone were to ask the children here what they want to be when they grow up, how many would say \u201ccosmonauts\u201d? I bet not very many, almost none.<\/p>\n
But at least we have the memory of a historic flight which moved the entire country.<\/p>\n
The Guant\u00e1namo Provincial Museum has a room dedicated to the event, in which it stores, among other objects, the capsule in which the two cosmonauts returned to earth.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s there, one can even touch it.<\/p>\n
Arnaldo Tamayo M\u00e9ndez was born 74 years ago, precisely in Baracoa, Guant\u00e1namo. He was the son of a poor family\u2026and he was able to go into space! It\u2019s a beautiful story, although so many people in Cuba no longer know about it.<\/p>\n
But in his place of birth it is alive. For the people of Guant\u00e1namo Tamayo M\u00e9ndez continues being an idol, a palpable example of how dreams can come true.<\/p>\n
