Yet although the Chinese population has dwindled to almost nothing, Chinese culture is thriving in Havana\u2019s \u201cChinatown without Chinese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chinatown is a tourist hotspot.\u00a0 Many stores and bakeries still retain Chinese-derived names left over from previous owners, though most sell mainly Cuban products and desserts, like flan or <em>tres leches.\u00a0 <\/em>Some of the \u201cChinese\u201d restaurants actually serve Italian food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all the Chinese people left, the Cuban government kept the exteriors and filled the restaurants they left behind with Cuban people,\u201d said Pedro Eng, an octogenarian Chinese Cuban.\u00a0 \u201cThe Cubans learned to make some version of Chinese food using the ingredients they had, or they made whatever else they wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95967\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95967\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/6-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95967\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/6-4.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Omairy Lorenzo\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Omairy Lorenzo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Chinatown\u2019s height in 1875, more than 40,000 people of Chinese descent lived in Cuba. Many were descendants of the 125,000 Chinese indentured servants who were brought to Cuba to work on sugar plantations in the 1850\u2019s. He came to Havana with his father in 1942 and now lives in a run-down retirement home in Chinatown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could I have gone back?\u201d he asked slowly in Cantonese, a dialect once commonly spoken in this neighborhood. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anyone in the United States, and I lost contact with my family in China, so I couldn\u2019t return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically, however, despite the steep decline in the population of native Chinese here, the number of Chinese cultural resources available in Chinatown is growing.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993 a group of Chinese-Cubans formed the Havana Chinatown Promotion Group with the intention of \u201crecovering\u201d Chinese customs and traditions.\u00a0 The group also helped transform Chinatown into a tourist zone.\u00a0 Its efforts, which the government supports, have led to the formation of organizations including the Center of Traditional Chinese Arts, the Chinese Martial Arts School, and the retirement home where Jing Shan lives.<\/p>\n<p>Improving relations between the Cuban and Chinese governments have also fueled the rebirth of Chinese culture here.\u00a0 Aid from China helps to maintain cultural centers started by the Chinatown Promotional Group.\u00a0 China also supports the Confucius Institute, where Cubans may take free lessons in Mandarin, taught by teachers from Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s impact on the Cuban economy is immediately visible.\u00a0 Chinese products flood the market. Most new vehicles on the streets are made by Geely and Yutong, both Chinese brands.\u00a0 Many Cubans use phones and tablets from Huawei, a major Chinese technology company that produces some of the only new electronics available in Cuba.\u00a0 Through this largely one-sided trade, China has become Cuba\u2019s second largest trading partner\u2014and largest creditor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95965\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95965\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/4.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Omairy Lorenzo\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Omairy Lorenzo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For some people in China, the Cuban government\u2019s emphasis on Chinese culture has opened a pathway into Cuba.\u00a0 Tao Yan, who came from Shanghai in 1996 at the age of 32, said he was drawn into Cuba by its financial and cultural opportunities.\u00a0 The lack of Chinese people and competing authentic Chinese restaurants, he said, offered a good business opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a hundred Chinese are left from the earlier generations,\u201d Tao Yan said.\u00a0 \u201cThere are even fewer new immigrants like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tao Yan\u2019s status as a Chinese citizen allows him to return to China to buy ingredients that are not accessible in Cuba. \u201cCertain things, like shiitake mushrooms, you just won\u2019t find in Cuba,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His efforts to provide authentic Chinese cuisine have been successful.\u00a0 The restaurant, called Tian Tan, is popular and frequently highlighted in guidebooks.<\/p>\n<p>New immigrants like Tao may represent a turning point in Havana\u2019s \u201cChinatown without Chinese.\u201d As the older generation of native Chinese fades away, the number of Chinese arriving in Cuba is expected to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely think more Chinese people will come to live in Cuba,\u201d Tao Yan said. \u201cThere is a lot of incentive to come.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faded Chinese letters adorn the facades of buildings in Havana\u2019s Chinatown.\u00a0 On the streets below, Cubans dressed in faux Chinese costumes compete to entice customers into restaurants dazzlingly decorated with red lanterns and gold trimmings.\u00a0 Yet strangely, no Chinese people are to be seen.
