\u201cPresident Trump is turning back the clock to a tragically failed Cold War mindset,\u201d Ben Rhodes, ex-adviser of President Barack Obama, opined this Friday in an article published<\/a> in the magazine The Atlantic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rhodes, one of the principal architects of the rapprochement to Cuba, pointed out that the changes the president would announce this Friday \u201cwill hurt ordinary Cubans, harm the image of the United States\u201d and regretted that they are \u201cignoring the voices of the Cuban people and a majority of Americans just so that he can reward a small and dwindling political constituency.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his opinion, \u201cWhile not a full reversal of the Obama opening, Trump\u2019s actions have put relations between the United States and Cuba back into the prison of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt didn\u2019t have to be this way, and it won\u2019t stay this way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rhodes recalled the negotiations between both countries for the reestablishment of relations and the Vatican\u2019s mediation. \u201cA Cardinal said the world would be moved by this example of former adversaries putting aside the past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he highlighted Cuba\u2019s place in the contemporary international image \u201cfrom the Kennedys to the Obama era\u201d and noted that for the developing countries, especially Latin America, it \u201chas been a symbol of sovereignty and resistance\u201d in the face of the United States.<\/p>\n

In that sense, he criticized the policy followed for decades by U.S. administrations. \u201cAs a democracy-promotion vehicle, the embargo has been a failure,\u201d he affirmed.<\/p>\n

The former presidential adviser reviewed what had been achieved based on Obama\u2019s measures to break with the past and questioned that the new Trump policy is motivated by a commitment to promote human rights. As an example he cited the president\u2019s trip to Saudi Arabia, \u201ca country ruled by a family,\u201d and the million dollars\u2019 worth of agreements for the sale of weapons.<\/p>\n

He commented that the relaxing of trips to Cuba brought about an increase of visitors from his country, who \u201cbrought new ideas and more resources directly to the Cuban people,\u201d while \u201cU.S. technology companies like Google took advantage of the opening to forge new agreements, including one that enhances access to the Internet for Cubans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhodes recalled that the opening to Cuba favored the growth of the island\u2019s private sector, which has represented \u201cboth an improvement in their quality of life, and in their human rights, as they are no longer reliant on the state for their livelihoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, he celebrated the successes of bilateral cooperation between \u201ctwo governments that once plotted how to undermine one another,\u201d on issues like the struggle against drug trafficking, the testing of cancer vaccines and the response to natural disasters, and referred to the end of the \u201cWet Foot Dry Foot\u201d policy, \u201ca hostile policy that endangered the lives of Cubans.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his opinion, \u201cThe opening to Cuba also opened up new opportunities in Latin America and around the world\u201d and commented on the joint work in the Colombia peace talks and the confrontation of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s actions will not reverse all of this progress, but they represent a step backwards,\u201d pointed out Rhodes, who added that \u201cU.S. businesses can only press for reforms in how Cuba structures its economy if they can actually do business in Cuba,\u201d something which this Friday\u2019s changes considerably restrict.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cuban government is not going to let go of their holdings because the U.S tells them to; they\u2019re far more likely to turn to Russia and China,\u201d he opined.<\/p>\n

As to the trips, Rhodes criticized that \u201cU.S. travelers now have to go through the absurd process of figuring out if a hotel they\u2019re staying at is owned by the Cuban military,\u201d as well as the \u201cominous language about requiring Americans to document their activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite rhetoric about supporting Cuban entrepreneurs, any reduction in travel is going to hit them\u2026. Those are the Cubans that Trump is hurting\u2014not hotel owners who will still welcome tourists from other countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Rhodes, Trump\u2019s announcements will not promote greater democracy in Cuba no matter how much the president affirms this and will allow the Cuban government to renew the \u201cideological conflict with the U.S.,\u201d revitalizing international support for the island.<\/p>\n

However, in his opinion \u201cthe instinct for isolation that Trump embraced will fail.\u201d Among his arguments to sustain that opinion, he cites the support of 70 percent of Americans \u2013 including a majority of Republicans \u2013 for the lifting of the embargo, the bills presented in Congress to lift the travel ban and doing business with Cuba, and the more open position of young Cuban Americans toward the island.<\/p>\n

\u201cA new generation, in Cuba and the United States, doesn\u2019t want to be defined by quarrels that pre-date their birth,\u201d he affirmed.<\/p>\n

For Rhodes, the fact that this Friday\u2019s announcements were at Miami\u2019s Manuel Artime Theater is the best \u201csymbol for the past.\u201d That\u2019s why he concluded it \u201cshould be seen for what it is: not as a step forward for democracy, but as the last illogical gasp of a strain of American politics with a 50-year track record of failure.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
