
{"id":96206,"date":"2017-06-26T06:00:47","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T10:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/?p=96206"},"modified":"2017-06-20T16:21:22","modified_gmt":"2017-06-20T20:21:22","slug":"nail-polish-and-empowerment-shine-at-in-home-salons-in-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/cuban-economy\/nail-polish-and-empowerment-shine-at-in-home-salons-in-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Nail polish and empowerment shine at in-home salons in Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women who want beauty treatments at Salon Giselle must step carefully over piles of rubble and corrugated metal.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the plaster dust, peeling paint, and mismatched chairs, business at Salon Giselle is booming.\u00a0 Feminine chatter and camaraderie flows as in any other beauty parlor.<\/p>\n<p>But this salon is not just about hair and nails.\u00a0 In-home beauty salons have given many Cuban women an opportunity to participate in the new dynamism of small business here.\u00a0 They allow female owners with little formal training to turn a girlhood hobby into an empowering economic venture.<\/p>\n<p>A few bottles of nail polish, a padded chair against a sink, the right license and some business savvy have landed many women their own businesses\u2014something that would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96321\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Holgu\u00edn-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96321\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Holgu\u00edn-4.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Kaloian\" width=\"755\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Kaloian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Independent businesses were banned as antithetical to the spirit of the revolution in the 1960s.\u00a0 They remained illegal until 1993, when the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba\u2019s principal benefactor, sent the country into a sharp economic downturn.\u00a0 In response, the government loosened restrictions on private enterprise.\u00a0 Beauty salons were among the first new businesses that sprouted up.<\/p>\n<p>Part of their success was due to the poor quality of state-owned salons.\u00a0 \u201cYou would go to a hair salon and the hair dryer wouldn\u2019t work, or there wouldn\u2019t be hair dye or products,\u201d said Isabel Rivalta, a spokeswoman at the Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos, an NGO that establishes Cuban solidarity groups in foreign countries. \u201cThe state had serious problems trying to guarantee everything in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivalta said that education and health care are the government\u2019s main priorities, so it is willing to allow private citizens to take over some forms of enterprise. The state will continue to operate beauty salons, she said, and as long as both state and private salons provide good service, both will continue to coexist.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of Salon Giselle, a friendly woman named Yisel, said she hopes construction will be finished soon.\u00a0 Her salon has been open for nearly two years and has four full-time employees.\u00a0 Like all private entrepreneurs in Cuba, they hold government-issued licenses that allow them to work independently.<\/p>\n<p>One of Yisel\u2019s main problems is finding enough quality beauty products at reasonable prices.\u00a0 She buys what she can from official state stores, but their supply is limited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest you buy from private vendors,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cYou have to buy everything at market price, because wholesale doesn\u2019t exist in Cuba yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, vendors\u2014many of them women\u2014stop at places like Salon Giselle to offer products for sale.\u00a0 Yisel and her employees review all their offerings, which range from underwear to hair ties.\u00a0 At some point in the future, Yisel hopes, the network of private salons will become organized enough to provide stylists with bulk quantities of beauty products and more durable tools.<\/p>\n<p>Mentorship is also a key part of Yisel\u2019s business model.\u00a0 Two of her employees are just 18.\u00a0 Both recently graduated from university beauty courses, but lacked hands-on training due to the declining number of state establishments where they could practice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96264\" style=\"width: 2448px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1982.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96264\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1982.jpg\" alt=\"Yisel, dressed in black, is the proud owner of Salon Giselle in Trinidad, Cuba, where she and her employees make their living beautifying local women. Photo by Caroline Kelly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once construction in her salon is finished, Yisel plans to paint the walls, add hot water to the hair washing station, and most of all, find matching towels \u2014 a rare luxury.\u00a0 But the near-total renovation takes time, money, and hard work.<\/p>\n<p>This scrimping and saving is nowhere to be found, however, at Chic, another beauty parlor on the other side of Trinidad. The owner, Karelia, married a Canadian tourist and lived in Canada for seven years.\u00a0 She decided to return to her homeland and open a salon as an income source.\u00a0 Her husband bankrolls the venture.<\/p>\n<p>A slight but gregarious woman wearing tight, bright clothes and hot pink lipstick, Karelia laughs and sneezes between drags on her cigarette.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got this place because I married a tourist,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cHere, no Cuban can buy anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karelia travels regularly to Canada and brings beauty supplies home after every trip.\u00a0 Her salon is in her family\u2019s former garage.\u00a0 She employs four stylists and gives every customer her homemade business card.<\/p>\n<p>Her success, however, hasn\u2019t made her forget her roots.\u00a0 She charges Cubans less than tourists.\u00a0 Cuban customers don\u2019t bring in enough money, she explained, while foreign customers allow her employees to make better salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s only fair,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96320\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Holgu\u00edn-3-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96320\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Holgu\u00edn-3-2.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Kaloian\" width=\"755\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another nail business in Holgu\u00edn. Photo by Kaloian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Forty miles from here, in the provincial capital of Santa Clara, a 27-year-old dancer named Yaimara, who paints nails on the side, hopes to open a beauty salon after finishing her stage career.<\/p>\n<p>After Yaimara accumulated a handful of customers in her neighborhood, her family spent a hefty $40 to buy her an electric tool to apply acrylic nails.\u00a0 She paints customers\u2019 nails in her own tiny bedroom.\u00a0 They sit on her chair as she spreads supplies on her comforter.<\/p>\n<p>She applies the nail polish in generous, dripping strokes, using a rudimentary technique.\u00a0 Later she hopes to take classes that will give her more formal education in hair and skin care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to start a business and have a hair salon,\u201d Yaimara said confidently. \u201cDance is for now, and I love it, but you have to dedicate yourself to other things, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It takes a considerable amount of money to open up a beauty salon\u2014or any business\u2014in a country where most people earn salaries around $20 per month.\u00a0 Many Cuban women, however, want to follow the path blazed by entrepreneurs like Yisel, whose salon in Trinidad is starting to boom.\u00a0 They understand that success requires sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t go out,\u201d Yisel said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t shop for shoes or clothes.
