{"id":96836,"date":"2017-06-27T09:10:14","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T13:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/?p=96836"},"modified":"2017-06-27T09:10:14","modified_gmt":"2017-06-27T13:10:14","slug":"smith-theres-a-road-to-advance-between-cuba-and-minnesota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/smith-theres-a-road-to-advance-between-cuba-and-minnesota\/","title":{"rendered":"Smith: There\u2019s a road to advance between Cuba and Minnesota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"en-US\">An official delegation from the state of Minnesota headed by Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith was the first to travel to Cuba seeking business opportunities \u2013 particularly in the agricultural sector \u2013 after the new policy announced by President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">For Smith the restrictions announced in Miami on June 16 are a setback in bilateral relations between both nations, but in the agricultural sector \u201cthere\u2019s a road to advance\u201d between her state and Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The trip\u2019s purpose was not to concretize commercial agreements but rather to take the first steps to expand opportunities, she explained during a press conference in the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Smith arrived early last week to the island heading a bipartisan delegation also made up by representatives of agriculture, business, education, and research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">During her visit the lieutenant governor spoke with members of the National Association of Small Farmers, with a cooperative managed by women, authorities from the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as with the president of People\u2019s Power of the Cuban province of Mayabeque, Tamara Valido.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96841\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Vicegobernadora-Minnesota-AP-755x490-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96841\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Vicegobernadora-Minnesota-AP-755x490-1.jpg\" alt=\"Smith held talks with Tamara Valido, president of People\u2019s Power of the Cuban province of Mayabeque.\" width=\"755\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smith held talks with Tamara Valido, president of People\u2019s Power of the Cuban province of Mayabeque.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Smith, who affirmed that the closeness between Trump\u2019s announcement and her visit is fortuitous, said there is a great opportunity on the island to continue growing in cooperation and carrying out exchanges in areas like culture, health, and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">She also said that Minnesota is planning to send other delegations to the island and hopes to invite to her State Cuban representatives to expand the rapprochement for the benefit of both parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">In addition, she said it was natural that Minnesota and Cuba be \u201ctrade partners\u201d due to common characteristics like a strong agricultural economy and a family tradition in agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96843\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Minnesota-EFE-601x1024-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96843\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Minnesota-EFE-601x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith during a press conference in Havana. In the case of her state, in the breeding of turkeys, hogs and the planting of corn and soybeans; while Cuba is strong in crops like tobacco, coffee, and tropical fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">However, Smith noted her concern about the \u201cuncertainties\u201d that the new policy can cause among the U.S. people, especially in areas like tourism and other businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">During the visit, the mission sounded out the possibilities of commercial exchange, fundamentally in the agricultural sphere, one of the areas whose doors were opened by the \u201cthawing\u201d promoted by Barack Obama and Ra\u00fal Castro, despite the validity of the U.S. blockade on Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">In principle, these exchanges between the two countries are still being allowed and Trump has not mentioned that he plans to eliminate this permit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a> <span lang=\"en-US\">Tina Smith called for waiting for the regulations to become effective \u2013 a process that could take several months \u2013 to then make decisions related to this. \u201cI\u2019m going home with a great deal of respect for the Cuban people,\u201d she concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OnCuba\/EFE<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An official delegation from the state of Minnesota headed by Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith was the first to travel to Cuba seeking business opportunities \u2013 particularly in the agricultural sector \u2013 after the new policy announced by President Donald Trump.
