{"id":96837,"date":"2017-07-01T06:02:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T10:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/?p=96837"},"modified":"2017-06-27T19:14:23","modified_gmt":"2017-06-27T23:14:23","slug":"robert-hass-travels-to-cuba-heading-a-delegation-of-u-s-writers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/robert-hass-travels-to-cuba-heading-a-delegation-of-u-s-writers\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Hass travels to Cuba heading a delegation of U.S. writers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Well into his 70s, prestigious U.S. poet Robert Hass, winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, is heading a delegation of U.S. writers traveling to Cuba to promote the rapprochement between both countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Hass is considered one of the United States\u2019 most important contemporary poets and was awarded the Pulitzer, shared, for his book of poems <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Time and Materials<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The visit will take place barely a month after Trump announced his new policy toward the island, which restricts a type of exchange trips between both nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Hass is accompanied by a dozen poets, among them Brenda Hillman, his wife, and renowned poets Jane Mead, Claudia Keelan and Jane Hirshfield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The group will participate in the Our America Traveling World Poetry Festival, which will be held in Havana July 9-15. During his stay he will attend public readings, creative writing workshops, and experience-sharing meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Hass will read his works in the Cuban capital\u2019s Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas, together with Cuban poets Roberto Fern\u00e1ndez Retamar and Nancy Morej\u00f3n. He will also preside over a two-day creative writing workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Robert Hass: How Poetry Captivates Us\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9MMXCSBlaSU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a> <span lang=\"en-US\">Between 1995 and 1997 the intellectual held the post of U.S. Prize-Winning Poet, a position designated by the Library of Congress with the aim of increasing national consciousness on a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Academy of American Poets Chancellor Anne Waldman said about Robert Hass: \u201cRobert Hass is one of our most humanitarian poets. His poetry streams into the heart and intellect of our collective consciousness, reminding us of what matters most in this world, and in these particularly dark and challenging times.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">The festival was convened in 2016 in Medell\u00edn (Colombia) and will be held in 20 Latin American cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">In addition to U.S. and Cuban poets, other writers from Argentina, Slovenia, Nepal, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Brazil will come to the island.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well into his 70s, prestigious U.S. poet Robert Hass, winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize, is heading a delegation of U.S. writers traveling to Cuba to promote the rapprochement between both countries.
