Lovers of contemporary dance in the island will have an excellent opportunity to enjoy this art as the dancers of the Compañía Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (Contemporary Dance Company of Cuba (DCC) will go up to the stage of several provinces.
The company, which in April this year was acclaimed for its performances in Europe, will start later this month and un early October a tour of the island. The journey kicks off in the easternmost part of Cuba, where they will perform on September 22-23.
The second stop for these dancers and choreographers will be Holguin, where they will perform on the 28th and 29th. In this last presentation they will join EcoDanza from this eastern province. On October 2-3 they will perform in Bayamo, capital of the province of Granma, while on October 6-7 they will in the Teatro Principal in Camagüey.
Always at the usual hours, the audience in the theaters can enjoy a concert program that includes hits belonging to the diverse choreographic repertoire of Danza Contemporánea. That includes some of their best like Mambo 3 XXI, Demo-N/Crazy and Carmen.
Mambo 3 XXI earned its choreographer, Cuban George Céspedes, an Olivier Award nomination 2011 in the category of Best New Dance Production. Mambo is inspired by the music of Perez Prado and integrates street dances and floor techniques into a bravura work that is deeply rooted in Cuban folklore, yet offers a cross-cultural experience of dance traditions from around the world.
The aim of Demo-n/crazy: democracy of dance, where everyone has something to say, is communicating ideas, feelings, metaphors and feelings. The show is open to multiple interpretations. Rafael Bonachela’s choreography is very dynamic; it doesn’t allow dancers to take a break and probably makes the audience feel the same way.
Meanwhile, Carmen is a completely different version to the one by Prospero Merimee. In the setting by Finnish Kenneth Kvamström only men are involved, turning the work into a manly role play in which at times they tell somebody’s fortune and , and mantillas, castanets and fans are represented.
Under the direction of Miguel Iglesias, the Company is unique in the particular way of dealing with the language of contemporary dance, from a well-defined native art, blending the roots of Cuban folklore dance trends worldwide.
With over five decades of intense life and nearly three hundred premieres, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba maintains excellent results in the national and international stages and it is open to all artistic trends that reach the island, always from the perspective of the Cuban culture have a higher aesthetic and valid sense.
The Company will begin its work next year with the International Practical Workshop Cuban Modern Dance (Cubadanza), which will take run from January 7 through the 18th. The sessions of this Winter Workshop will enrich the knowledge of professional dancers and students who want to learn the art of Cuban modern dance.
