A new perspective within the audiovisual creation in our country proposes the Fifteenth ICAIC Young Exhibition to be held in the capital from March 1st through April 5th. Out of the hundred works made by Cuban filmmakers under 35, brought to this event, less than half make up the official section, with special performances, tributes and theoretical events occupy the locations of Chaplin and 23 and 12 movie theaters, Fresa y Chocolate Cinematographic Cultural Center and Titón room on the fifth floor of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry.
OnCuba arrived at the headquarters of the Sample and chatted with Yumey Besú, producer and one of the main organizers of the event to know some details of this edition. Once again dominated the fiction and documentary in the selection, since these genres are precisely where young people find the perfect vehicle to express their film concerns. Most of these works were done independently; the rest comes from the School of Art Media Studies (FAMCA) of the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) and other cultural institutions. The jury, presided by Marcel Beltran, shall select the winners in the various categories.
The opening event will take place at 2:00 PM at the Chaplin Cinema with the national premiere of the award winning film The work of the century, by Carlos Machado Quintela. Six hours later, they will have the opening ceremony where they will exhibit the Memories of the previous edition, registered by filmmaker Armando Capó.
As every year, the event pays tribute to a leading figure in our film, Nicolás Guillén Landrián will be recollected from the opening and his little known paintings will be exhibited in the lobby of the Chaplin theater.
The plastic arts have accompanied the Sample since its inception. It is one of the manifestations that has always been present along the movies and this time the protagonist is borne by the young artist Yomer Montejo who proposes his exhibition El objeto como consuelo solation. As is tradition posters of young designers students of the Institute of Design (l ISDI) are part of the exhibitions of the event.
Materials from different latitudes make up the always expected International Section. Samples are scheduled: SGAE and Somos Caribe with nine short films belonging to the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival. Also works of the prestigious Clermont Ferrand Festival will come.
Out of competition, as part of the special presentations who are attentive to the event’s program will appreciate the materials Alicia, by Marcel Beltran, and Café amargo, by Rigoberto Jimenez.
Workshops and lectures are always expected by participants and in this edition come from dissimilar specialties. The French producer Séverine Roinssard will share his knowledge on management of film projects. A script writing workshop will be taught by the young Spanish writer Diego San Jose. Renowned musician Robert Kraft will teach his workshop The music in the film.
The youthful look of Cuban cinema is legitimized year after year and no shortage of plans, perspectives and, of course, good projects. This time out of the thirty presented only 15 were selected in the Making Movies section, one of the most important sections of the event that enables novice filmmakers to opt for support and funding for the completion of their works.
