The Cuban spiker Leonardo Leyva established yesterday a new world record in scoring for a four-set match. Leyva, undisputed leader of the Samsung Blue Fangs club, scored 53 points against Korean Air Jumbos, a franchise where another Cuban player, Maikel ” the Russian ” Sánchez , performs.

The meeting ended with victory for the Samsung three sets to one (28-30, 30-28, 25-21, and 25-19) . That result consolidated it at the top of the standings in the Korean circuit with 17 wins and only 4 losses. Meanwhile, the team of the “Russian” is located in the fourth place with 9 and 11, in a tournament that features the participation of seven clubs.

The previous record was also held by Leyva with 51 points, who also has the highest individual figures for three and five set games with 42 and 59 respectively. Meanwhile, Maikel Sánchez on November 26 set the universal record for a single set with 31 points which ended56-54 ! favorable to his team against Rush & Cash.

Leonardo Leyva is from Jesús María neighborhood in Old Havana . There he took his first steps on the volleyball with Professor Piedra. He was a cadet in the 2007 World Cup in Mexico. With the national youth team he finished second in the world championship held in India in 2009. That same year he participated with the senior team at the NORCECA in Puerto Rico. There he took the decision to seek a new path for his career and his life and emigrated.

His professional debut was in Puerto Rico, playing for Fajardo, a team that won that league and he was elected MVP. In the 2012-2103 season, in Korea, he was also selected the most valuable and received the status of most popular player on the continent by the Asian Volleyball Federation.

Scoring 53 points in four sets does not happen every day, beyond the fact the quality of the circuit where you are playing. To Leyva (2.07 meter tall and a range attack in the 3.71 meters) this represented the fifth time over 50 points in a game. And like other volleyball players of the island right now he cannot play for the national team.
