The outstanding performance of the Cuban athletes in London 2012 will grant that event a special meaning among the Cuban participations in Olympic Games. Fourteen gold medals were obtained altogether – five in the conventional Games and nine in the Paralympics version – placing Cuba at the same level among participating nations, in the 16th and 15th positions, respectively.
Barcelona’92 was undoubtedly the topmost moment for Cuban sports with 14 gold medals, but it was in the British capital that the Cuban disabled athletes achieved their best performance of all times, both in the number of titles and the way they were obtained.
Cuba had the best global performance in winning titles, achieving 40.9% with only 22 athletes, while China, the big winner, did it with 32.6%. As to the total number of medals, the Cuban efficiency was also huge, reaching 77.2% with its 17 medals (9-5-3), only excelled by the Chinese with 79.3%.
All the athletes are now back home. Each one brings his own anecdotes and we have the great pride of having been represented by these very brave and courageous men and women.
