The Casa de las Americas is ready to host the 3rd Meeting of Young Artists and Writers of Latin America and the Caribbean, known as ¨Casa Tomada¨ (Taken House), an event that will take place between September 17 and 20.
58 guests – 30 Cubans and 28 foreigners-is the number of young artists and intellectuals who have confirmed their participation in an event which main theme this year will be devoted to social movements, communication, activism and creative process as well as the Latin American thought by and from young people.
As explained by Caridad Tamayo, specialist of the Literary Research Center at Casa de las Americas, “young writers participation has greatly increased this year”, who are interested in continuing the event that took place in 2009 to mark the 50th anniversary of this institution.
Taken House opens its doors with the theatrical play Woyzcek by Mono theater under the direction of William Ruiz with music by Luis Alberto Marino -recent graduate of composition at the University of the Arts-and who will take academic music for the first time to this youth event.
Furthermore, the climax of the meeting will be the concert ¨ Electronics for the Americas¨ by musicians of Electroacoustic Music National Laboratory and the Hermanos Saiz Association in collaboration with the PMM band.
In keeping with the festive spirit of the closing, Cuban artists Milton Raggi and Randy Moreno shall make a sample of video mapping (the art of projecting video images on buildings and other objects). On Friday 20, from nine in the evening, they’ll interact with the art deco architecture of Casa de las Americas.
A new feature of the meeting will be the presentation of the DVD ¨Drums Havana¨, known as the first phonogram on percussion in Cuba, on Tuesday 17th at 7 pm in Che Guevara Room, with a Jazz concert by Cuban percussionists Rodney Barreto and Oliver Valdés.
In general, participants in this new event are characterized by a multitude of creative interests: most of them are screenwriters, actors, text editors and renowned writers of poetry or fiction.
Meanwhile, Nahela Hechavarría, specialist of the plastic arts department in the Casa, referred to the presence of guests that integrate alternative circuits and art market as is the case of Argentinean Cristian Segura (1976), who at age 23 was appointed director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Tandil.
In this regard, on September 20 at 5 pm will be the opening of Taken Gallery, a sample that from the new means (video, installation, and net art) will dialogue with the public on the use of new technologies in the field of art from production to consumption and socialization. The event will start from the work of artists Milton Raggi and Cristian Segura .
Ana Niria Albo, who highlighted the presence of Puerto Rican filmmaker Ari Maniel Cruz, director of La Teta Productions , an independent film and theater company, referred to t he studies program on Latinos in the United States.
Maniel Cruz presented his film ¨Under my nails¨ (2011) in the last Havana Film Festival and in the Cine Las Americas International Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
Maniel and his wife, Puerto Rican actress and screenwriter Kisha Tikina, who won at the festival in Austin, Texas, the award for Best Actress , will be present at the panel titled ¨The metaphors of the journey¨ to be held on Thursday 19 at 10 am at the Manuel Galich Room of the institution.
This event is named after the first story published by the Belgian-born Argentine Julio Cortazar (1914-1984) writer, translator and intellectual.
