Romantic and devoted the most sublime of feelings, Descemer Bueno appeared this Friday at the Karl Marx Theater outpacing notoriety that he has gained on the international stage. A recognition that, it’s worth noting, he won with talent and commitment.
Bailando, his most recent success on the album Sex and love, by the Spanish Enrique Iglesias, has the featuring by Bueno, Iglesias and Cuban Gente de Zona, and won three Latin Grammy awards last November.
Descemer wanted to celebrate on Friday Valentine’s Day with two concerts in his beloved Havana, the city that inspires him. In the first of these performances he was accompanied by three close friends: Omi Hernandez, who gave him the possibility of opening the evening; Michael Sierra, El Micha; and Kelvis Ochoa, with whom he recalled Quédate a single that belongs to the CD Amor y música which they made together with Egrem-, and with the theme they evoked Santiago Feliu, the troubadour who died in 2014.
Minutes after the Friday concert, Descemer spoke with OnCuba. The artist explained the reasons for this presentation in the Cuban capital. “It is a gift to the people of Cuba, for my beloved Havana on the eve of February 14. And it is a gift that I wanted to do here, on a stage that used to intimidate me so much and now looks small to the public and myself moved by this great day dedicated to love and friendship”, he said.
With a repertoire basically focused on his album, Bueno was heard in Karl Marx. But also the composer wanted to give to the audience his latest works and recorded with the Spanish Rosario Flores and Estopa band as well as with Cuban Buena Fe, Waldo Mendoza and Leoni Torres, among others.
“It was the journey that I owed my people. My country, especially, has made me believe in my songs, enjoy and defend them”. Enrique Iglesias once said, “You have to sing your songs with your voice. Do not worry about how far you can get, or how big is your voice. It is yours and you must defend your songs. I have listened to him. And Cuba supported me and made its these songs. ”
Always confident, Descemer offered his concept of love: “This is a moment full of life. It is those stars that slide. It is the couple. It’s my mother. They are my friends. It is my country. To me love is everything”.
Always grateful to the Cuban public, Bueno said he was happy to have been born in the Greater Antilles. “Thank God for having lived all we’ve been through together, to be lucky enough to continue sharing with you, to only get carried away by this unique heartbeat that is Cuba, which is Havana,” he said.
Recently in Spain they created a festival called Bailando inspired by your song. What do you think about this?
“No, I did not. But I have heard that there are many versions of Bailando. I have been fortunate to participate in this song, people know me, and more than 850 million people have enjoyed it. It’s a song in our language and fit me doubt whether I would be able to break through the barriers of our language, which is one of the most spoken in the world, and has been successful. It’s a song that has been among the 20 biggest hits in history”.
Now that you are in such an important moment in your career, are you not afraid of fame?
“No, I have never been afraid. Fame is a leak event. The public is, friends are, the songs remain. Fearing fame, maybe it’s a little getting caught up in it. The day you put off by the success the muse will disappear, which is what leads to the purest, most sincere and humble of the earth souls”.
You released several songs at the concert, are you already recording a new album?
“We have many ideas of what may be a new record. When I speak of these songs I played today, I mean a phonogram I want to give to my country, my people of Cuba. I have been on many journeys on our Island. I visited Moa, Pinar del Rio, Santiago de Cuba … and I have found noble, beautiful and sensitive souls to my words. So I want to give them these songs.
“And then I’ll think of composing other songs for maybe win radios that do not put us not listen to us and have not been opened for us. Because they are still insensitive to the Cubans and the Cuban identity. I think Cuba is that, catapults you through the songs to other souls, other countries. That is why I am here with you giving away my issues and I will continue doing. This album is for you”.
With countless international commitments, Descemer Bueno does not rule out the possibility of touring the island. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot. What happens is that I am an artist of my country and have begun to be internationally bit by bit. I am not bragging about anything yet. I do believe that both me and other Cuban artists deserve to get our songs to Latin America, Europe, everywhere in the world “.
