The days and nights go by as they always do, however we may try to count them, but we usually view December as the end of a cycle, and January tends to be the special month in which we project the future. OnCuba does so optimistically, with the hope of making more friends in 2013 and being able to meet the expectations of those who want to come closer to Cuba and discover the soul of its people.

There couldn’t be a better time, because this month also marks the 150th birthday of José Martí, the most universal of all Cubans. “With all and for the good of all” was his dream for a republic, and that is the same spirit that inspires those of us who work on this magazine. To honor him, we present you with a selection of photos from an excellent series on Martí by one of the country’s most talented young artists.

In this issue, you also can read about a range of diverse and interesting topics, including the challenges faced by Cuban baseball; an unbiased look at Abakuá culture; the history of the Albear Aqueduct , a masterpiece of civil engineering; the eventful life of the first woman to practice medicine in Cuba, and—something that will be a new discovery for many—Manaca-Iznaga, a place where centuries-old traditions live on. You will also find an expert analysis of the new tax law.

The last page of our magazine cannot be the end of our encounter, so we propose that we stay connected through our website (www.oncubanews.com), which is updated daily. Special reports, up-to-the-minute news, a section on Economy and Business with comments by well-known experts, and audiovisual materials are all part of what we have to offer. And on top of that, we are online 24 hours a day through our Facebook page (www.Facebook/OnCuba) and our Ipad application.

This January, the OnCuba team wishes you a happy 2013, one in which we can be together.
