Renowned actor Jackie Chan announced that his foundation will participate in the donation of one million masks for the Cuban health system, diplomatic sources in China confirmed to the island’s official media.

Carlos Miguel Pereira, Cuban ambassador to that Asian nation, said that the artist is also interested in strengthening cultural ties with Cuba, according to a  dispatch from the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency.

Chan made the statements at the Cuban embassy in China, which he visited together with the intellectual Han Fangming, president of the Charhar Institute, one of the most renowned Chinese think tanks, the media outlet specified.

Both expressed their affection and admiration for Cuba, its history and culture, while Chan presented a copy of his latest book and reported the donation of masks on behalf of the aforementioned Institute and his own foundation, the publication added. In turn, he recognized the work of the Cuban School of Wushu and its president and founder, Roberto Vargas Lee, said Ambassador Pereira, quoted by the source.

For years he has alternated his forays on the big screen with charity, and even joined the fight carried out by China to eradicate extreme poverty, the agency pointed out, adding that his philanthropic work has also materialized in donations to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti and Japan, United Nations environmental projects and medical institutions in Singapore.

According to PL, Chan promised to give his entire fortune to charity when he dies, since he does not forget his humble origins, nor the words of a Red Cross official, who, when giving him a coat as a child, only told him: “If you really want to thank someone, just help others.”

Jackie Chan has participated in more than 200 films and for this reason the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded him, in 2016, the Honorary Oscar for his 50 years of work in the entertainment industry.
