Cuba is currently among the ten countries with the most citizens immunized against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported this Wednesday.

Dr. José Ángel Portal, head of that portfolio, explained that as part of the vaccination strategy, by the end of 2022, 97% of the population had been immunized, according to a note from the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency.

A total of 94.8% of the pediatric population had also received this protection, which places the island among the ten countries with coverage of more than 90% of its inhabitants, the publication added.

The media specifies that to date, 10,732,002 persons had received at least one dose of the Soberana 02, Soberana Plus and Abdala COVID-19 vaccines.

Of that total, 9,454,290 have a second dose coverage, while the third had been applied to 9,152,060 Cubans.

In this way, 10,013,599 persons have the complete vaccination scheme against the disease, which represents 90.7% of the Cuban population, PL highlighted.

Data published by the MINSAP website indicate that 8,725,052 citizens also have reinforcement doses.

Cuba has managed to successfully control the impact on the national territory of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week it stopped being considered a global health emergency on the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO).

However, Cuban experts warned this Tuesday about a slight increase in cases in the country based on the analysis of forecast models.

Dr. Raúl Guinovart, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing at the University of Havana, reported that the cumulative incidence in the country is two cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 15 days, with a tendency to increase.

He added that the provinces of Holguín, Granma and Las Tunas increased this indicator in the last week, and form an area where the highest incidence is concentrated, although overall the epidemiological situation of the country is very similar to that of the beginning of 2023.

According to MINSAP’s most recent daily report, until midnight this Tuesday, 35 of the 442 samples analyzed during the day had been positive for the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Se confirman 35 casos de #COVID19, para un acumulado de 1 113 542 positivos.

The hospitalization of 218 patients was also reported, 103 of them suspected of having contracted the disease, although none of them are in intensive care units.

For several months Cuba has not reported deaths related to COVID-19, which has caused the death of 8,530 people since the start of the pandemic.
