Program of the International Festival of Music and Poetry 2014 Announced

On April 8th, the In the Sea of the Antilles: X International Colloquium of Music and Poetry Festival Nicolás Guillén, 2014, will be open.

In the Aula Magna of the University of Havana (UH) Dr. Yolanda Wood, professor of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and director of the Center for the Study of Caribbean of Casa de las Americas will give the inaugural lecture of the event.

Also the organizers invited to the inaugural meeting the prominent Cuban pianist Aldo Lopez – Gavilan Junco and maestro Luis Carbonell .

Organized by the foundation that bears the name of the author of “Motivos de Son” this event intends to reflect on the work of the National Poet Nicolás Guillén. This time it will take palce in the framework of the 80th anniversary of West Indies Ltd. which was published in 1934.

Thus, the International Colloquium and Music and Poetry Festival will be dedicated to elaborate on this poem book and cultural and geographical context of its first release.

The theoretical meeting will host lectures, special presentations, and panels on the relationship of Nicolás Guillén with the Caribbean, from the poetic point of view, and also from his own experience of life and relationships with Caribbean people and personalities, which include the studies on West Indies Ltd, and relations between nations that make up the Caribbean, to highlight the socio-economic diversity in cultural terms, political, integration proposals, among other topics.

In the cultural program highlights the usual concert and Schola Cantorum Coralina, directed by Alina Orraca, and the release of the Corazon Adentro disc, with poems by Nicolas Guillen set to music.

As highlight of the closing on April 10th Master Luis Carbonell will recite the elegy “El Apellido” by Nicolas Guillen.
