This December 2013, the African and Ibero-American and Masculinity Network (RIAM by its Spanish acronym) and the Todas contracorriente project to prevent violence through art, develop new joint actions within the National Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Julio César González Pagés is a member of the Artists Network of the UNiTE campaign, launched by the Secretary General of the UN to end violence against women and girls, and general coordinator of the RIAM. In April this year he introduced in Cuba the campaign “The brave is not violent ” , which promotes non-violence among men, and on Monday , as part of this Cuban day , delivered in the House of ALBA in Havana a workshop to more than 50 artists on this problem, which the society of the island is not free of.

The singer Rochy Ameneiro , coordinator of Todas contracorriente, gave a concert along the female trio Strings Wind and the young pianist Rodrigo García , among other musicians from the Caribbean island . In a special way had the presence of the Mexican poet and songwriter Alejandro Filio, who also joined the campaign.

Filio, 53, will give today at seven pm a concert at the National Museum of Fine Arts with the support of the UN system in Cuba and the UNiTE campaign. Filio is a member of the New Song movement and author of more than a dozen albums, among them “a secret”, ” Filio “, ” There is Light Under” and ” in this immensity ” . He has also shared the stage with Cuban musicians like Carlos Varela and Silvio Rodríguez , with the latter in the well-known song ” You come with the sun.”

The presentation of Filio in Havana continues the experience of December 2012 when the Mexican Julieta Venegas also gave a concert in Havana to join her voice with other musicians in order to make visible gender abuse . Both initiatives are in addition to a tour of Rochy and RIAM, which this year included presentations in eight Cuban cities of “The brave is not violent.” Earlier, the singer had toured art schools in the country to promote a culture of peace through knowledge of Cuban music.

All these actions have the support of UN Women and the accompaniment of the United Nations System in Cuba, among other national and international institutions such as the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Since 2008, the UNiTE campaign calls on governments, civil society, private sector, media and the very system of the United Nations to fight together in the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

In August 2012, the network joined the Orange Day; an initiative of the Youth Network JOIN intended that every 25th to insist on the need to systematize the work for no violence against women and girls.
