A Boeing 737 of the Mexican airline Damojh crashes at 12:08 pm today after leaving José Martí International Airport in Havana.

Flight DMJ 0972 traveled with 104 passengers on board plus the crew. According to the first reports from international press agencies based in Havana, it had been rented by Cubana de Aviacion. The aircraft crashed in an area of agricultural crops a few minutes after departure. The flight was headed to terminal 1, Holguín.

Prensa Latina reports that a huge column of smoke could be seen from the airport. Cuban firefighters were trying to control the fire. There was a strong police presence in the place.

An airport’s authority said that the causes of the accident are being investigated.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel moved to the airport, which is currently operational, according to sources from the Ministry of Transport.

“First there was a loud roar and then the smoke began to be seen and after a while the fire trucks and ambulances were passing by. The streets around here are closed and you can still see a column of smoke”, Odalys González, a neighbor living near the airport told BBC.
